Instead of writing a traditional review I'm just gonna gather up all the questions this game throws up and write them up like a list. Everyone I talk to is saying "why this" and "why that", so please feel free to add yours...

Firstly, in-game screenshots, from the sublime:

And the real thing, from Google Earth:

To the downright beautiful:

To the ridiculous:

What, did they run out of polygons or something????

Why/What list:

Why on EARTH don't the cars have detailed undersides? I guess the image above answers the question "can you roll a car in GT5?"
Why do we have to unlock crash damage, tyre wear and fuel usage, why?
What are the tickets for? They appear to have no purpose whatsoever other than to make getting a prize car a couple of clicks longer.
Why are shadows, dust and tyre smoke so jaggy at times?
Why when Evolution Studios' WRC game had rally course tapes that you could drive through nearly ten years ago are GT5's solid as rock?
Why do replays stop before the finish line, and why does the CPU take over control of the car just before the finish line too? To rub it in, the stupid AI then even sometimes crashes cars after the finish like some dumb arcade game.
When Codies in DiRT2 and latterly NFS:HP have produced engine samples that make me want to come in my pants, do GT5's "samples" consist almost entirely of poor buzzy rubbish, possibly recycled GT4 sounds. And why do the tune-up exhausts take any individual sound an engine had away and invariably make any car sound like a Dyson?
Tyre squealing sounds much more real in NFS too.
Why are there no upgrades for brakes?
Why do a M$ and turn v-sync off so we get occasional tearing, it's SO FUCKING ugly and the game doesn't hold 60fps anyway.
Why can Milestone produce more convincing rally handling and physics in their first attempt at a rally game and yet after 4 tries PD still can't get it right (you still have way too much inertia when cornering so you feel like you're towing a caravan.)
Normal/Premium cars - I mean WTF. Normal? "Normal" cars are GT4 cars schmeared with a 10 gallons of varnish. Admittedly they look fucking lovely but are we supposed to feel "special" because we get some "Premium" cars and they aren't all NORMAL?
Why do most cars even after all these years still arrive in your possession with completely useless and unrealistic gear ratios? I've even lapped some poor AI sap in a '60s Corvette because it hit the rev limiter halfway down the straight FFS.
Why do specialist vehicles you'd never want disappear from the used car section just as you arrive at an event you need it for?
Why is the structure and progression seemingly so fucked? (cars for the next series of races cost hundreds of thousands to millions and the races I can win right now pay 20-30k.)
Why is licence test difficulty so uneven? Gold first time here, glad for a bronze and a pass after 10 or 20 attempts there. There's no way they were tested as well as previous GTs
Why can't I stop playing it? NFS: HP is a much better game.

These are just some of my own, and others that I've gathered from friends, so please add yours if you have any. They will be going in our review.

I think it's for the same reason that Metal Gear Solid had 40+ minute cutscenes; ie Sony treat these game-makers as if they're the next fucking Picasso, and don't ever pull them up over anything.

GT5 should NEVER have taken so long, and, once it was done it shoulda been QA'd and playtested to within an inch of its life to make it perfect in response to such a development time. Why nobody at Sony just didn't say: "look - you don't need 1000+ cars, of which only 200 are actually made for this game, and of which there's 2 versions of a FUCKING SUZUKI CAPPUCINO!!!!! So can you please just make 200+ (DIFFERENT!!!) cars that are "premium"....oh, and we've heard back from the playtesters that they don't want 3 or 4 button presses to receive a prize car"....and shit like that.

.....I think it's the "Premium" car thing that annoys me the most - the obsession with minute variations of the same Japanese car instead of genuinely epic and recognisable classics is just wanky indulgence taken to the Nth degree.

Wow, what an interesting game GT5 has transpired to be. It's clear they made a game from themselves and not considered to any great degree the paying customer. You would think that Sony, with such superior competition in the form of XBL, would at least get the online bit right. For me it just reinforces why I have stuck with my 360. Okay, I don't like driving games but it just makes the point again.

Yup -I said it on the other thread; Sony's got some seriously misplaced arrogance with PS3, its games, its clunky OS, shit patching system, shitter online system...and rubbish controller.

Oh, and those shadows and smoke in GT5 are fuckmongously ugly!

I can only imagine what it will be like for someone getting this game for Christmas. We all know Sony don't do cumulative patches. So by Boxing day, there will no doubt be half a dozen patches. Not to mention the install. Depending on how well your PS3 accesses updates, you could be waiting literally hours before playing the game.

My own experience with PSN is dire. I've been on 50meg for a while, but when I had to reinstall Everybodys Golf, the updates took a whole weekend to download! I'm not kidding either - over 24 hours to grab something like 4 gigs of updates, all downloaded as smaller packages rather than one big up to date one.

Oddly, the GT5 install took 40 mins and then was STILL an option to install yet more....AND the little "installing" button still flashes every time I start a new event!!!! WHAT THE FUCK.

Guys, if I hadn't borrowed a mates PS3 (as I was gagging to play Uncharted 1 & 2 - glad I did too, brilliant games) and seen a couple of albeit small updates first hand, I simply wouldn't believe what you've been posting. I think the biggest update I've seen on XBL was the recent dashboard update and that took minutes. Most game updates take seconds.

How on earth does a company as big and experienced as Sony seem so able to consistently get it wrong? Arrogance? Incompetence? Lord knows, either way I won't be buying a PS3.

P.S. That said I will be borrowing the PS3 again to play Ico and Shadow HD as well as and The Last Guardian ... ahem.

P.P.S I've played Game Dev Story on my iPod Touch and platform and games development isn't that hard, so come on Sony buck your ideas up :arse:

P.P.P.S When I borrowed the PS3 I found dashboard navigation truely a bag-o-shite and difficult to find stuff, just me?

I think it's arrogance from living off past glories on PS1/2.

No, you're not alone; the XMB is a bitchkitty use nice and quickly imho.

I love reading the threads at Neogaf - even if it does make me want to commit murder. The rabid fanboys were declaring the long dev time would be a resultant game which was perfect in everyway with "more features than god".

They got super pissed off with Edge's 7/10 review and supposedly GT shouldn't be reviewed the same way as "normal games" as it is FACT that the game is amazing.

But now with all the patches being mentioned and what will be fixed/added, they claim it is fantastic that the game is getting so much support - completely losing sight of the fact that they were claiming the six years would mean a perfect game :) I swear they must all be 11 years old, especially one tiresome twat calling himself solidsnakex. The worst apologist ever for a videogame in the history of videogames.

TBH mate I don't really visit any other forums than GC's for that reason. The sad thing is that Solidsnakex is probably our age which makes it all the more annoying.

I only visit 2 other gaming sites, Neogaf and Rllmuk. Rllmuk because it grew from the remnants of the orginal Edge forums which I used to frequent, and Neogaf because despite the dipshits, there are some people there with encycolpedic knowledge of games. The sheer number of visitors means that on occasion, you get threads there genuinely worth reading.

The trouble is, the mods there throw bans around like confetti. The power they wield goes to their heads. I've seen them ban people who posted information from games, where the information in the magazine has proven to be incorrect.

Just in the Epic Mickey thread I think they banned something like 20 people who merely expressed a desire for a port to the HD consoles! Needless to say I read the threads I'm interested in and never post a damned thing!

But I'm going off topic wildly here.

I'm sooooooo tempted to get this game now as I can't resist driving games. BUT......my PS3 is still on 3.15 firmware as I was interested in the jailbreak stuff going on. There are some neat emus now available and also they are working on better media capabilities (playing MKV's without converting them first would be fantastic for me personally).

So sat here wondering if I should get a second PS3 for current games. But current games amounts to just GT5 at the minute and no way the game is worth buying a second machine for.

I don't use forums anywhere else. I like the fact that no one on these boards is a tit and everyone has something worth reading. Plus I can't keep up with the amount of traffic you get on Eurogamer and Computerandvideogames.com, the two sites I tend to get my news from.

Nobody other than you....you titster.

@ Retro - Buying another PS3 just for GT5 would be fucking insane if you ask me, bro. If you could only play Forza 3 and some of the PGR's on the 360, you'd be getting enough of a driving fix - it's quite simply not that good that a whole new console would justify itself.

I "have" GT5 waiting to be wrapped and installed on xmas day. I have also purchased a new 320gb hard drive to replace the 40gb one that is stuffed to the gills (with next to nothing on it???)

I'll let you know of my xmas day install experience... really looking forwards to it now...
