So it has been revealed by Nintendo that the 3DS will be region locked, and they are side stepping the issue of cost by saying it is down to retailers to set a price. On the issue of region locking, their excuses (from the U.K arm) are laughable. Amongst the excuses, are that of age ratings, and that different regions require different ratings on some games. That falls flat because they are actually giving the U.K and Australia the same machine and games - and Oz have wildly different ratings to us, and in fact at the moment don't even have an 18 rating for games. It is obviously all about controlling prices across the various regions. I believe the U.S machine costs the equivalent of £180 ish. Shocking. I for one won't be taking the plunge. I'll be waiting for a price drop - mainly because I can't see 3D anyway because of my eyesight. But hopefully as time passes and the price drops, hackers will get on top of the machine and enable different region games to be played. I think we all know that europe is considered a second rate area when it comes to Nintendo. Pity the people who travel and are suddenly unable to pick up software no matter the country they are in. Fucking Nintendo eh? Living in the dark ages as usual. What a shame the DS and Wii have been such successes and let them remain the arrogant twats they have always been. Anyone going to be picking one up on launch day? |

Let's look at the clues: 1. My Game Boy Advance sat in a drawer for all but 2 weeks of its life (a holiday) 2. My DS Lite sat in a draw for about the same and now Emily has it. I LOVE the idea of the 3DS, but am still yet to try anything in 3D, plus £220 is unreal, and my histoire with Ninty products c'est terrible. Edited by Juz, Jan 22 2011, 02:34 PM.

Region locking (not that I'm too fussed about it) and price aside, I think this Ninty product is completey different. Even igonoring the 3D aspect for a second, just look at the games line up. Far more mature and depth in what they're offering and thats just what we know is being launched and in dev now. Resi, Street Fighter, Zelda, Kid Icarus etc. Far better offerings than we've seen on the DS in years. The graphical capability is the differentiator I think. Serious games are surely going to interest the hardcore a bit more? I for one would love one. And its a console I don't see gathering dust which is more than can be said for most Nintendo products. |

Typically for Nintendo they release a new machine before I feel I've had the best out of their two previous machines. They can kiss my ass anyway, but at that price, it's an insult. Anyone who buys one should be locked up for their own protection. People who buy them must have more money than brain cells (and in case Sloppy reads this most people have a lot of brain cells, more than money anyway - supposedly 6 trillion or so.) If the "industry killing" Sony and the "greedy magacorp" Microsoft worked by the same marketing model we'd be playing on PS5s & Xbox 1080s which would both display worse graphics than the Dreamcast, and most games would be 2D - fact. How about some serious games for the Wii and the DS Lite/DSi first? You may think that I'm not a great fan of the way that Nintendo treat us in the UK and am bitter about it and let it colour my opinion of them, but I'd always deny that and just say that I hope the stupid bloody things make every simpleton who buys one go cross-eyed like Navin R. Johnson's clip-on specs did in The Jerk so they get sued to bankruptcy. I would then of course revere them for the industry leading giants that they once were, just like Sega, the clueless, heedless wankers. |

One thing that has struck me of late is just home common piracy is on the DS Seems EVERYONE has one of these r3ds (or similar cards) packed full of games. Not just those who are in the "know" but normally law abiding citizens Everytime I have seen a DS of late its been loaded with dozens of games |

I'm in two minds about the whole DS piracy thing. My uncle wanted a DS a few christmases back. He had seen Brain Training and thought it looked cool. But he had heard about "free games" from someone in the pub. I hooked him up with an R4 and for a very short time he thought Brain Training was great, and so did a few of his mates. They all bought DS's and played Brain Training for maybe a couple of months on and off. And guess what - none of them use them anymore. They had a few copied games installed when they got the copy devices, and thought the games were shite, and more importantly, thought at £30 they were a rip-off for what they were. I know of my uncle and maybe 4-5 of his mates, who all bought the DS and Nintendo made a profit on each one. And they haven't ever bothered with any of the copied games, and the machines gather dust. So Nintendo were never going to make money out of any of them anyway other than from the buzz around the hardware and the purchase of them. Not a defense for piracy. But when they talk of "money lost", it is never as black and white as they would like the figures to imply. On a separate note, after seeing the PSP is anyone more tempted by that now you have seen what both handhelds will offer? I am sure the PSP is going to cost a shit load of cash. But to be honest, as someone who can't view 3D, I think the PSP would tempt me more than the 3DS. |

Dude- are you SURE that you won't see the 3D? I've got bad astigmatism and have yet to test ANYTHING in 3D, but isn't the 3D on a 3DS all to do with accelerometers rather than how you look at it if you get my drifter? |

Apparently the screen has some kind of mechanical element to it which throws out 2 separate images - something along the lines of those gimmicky picture cards that you used to see, where the picture changed depending on which angle you looked at it. But I can only see out of one eye properly and so I am fairly certain I won't see it. I did hear on a podcast around E3 time last year, that one of the guys was told by one of the girls demo'ing it, that she was blind in one eye and could see the 3D. He had a similar issue and said he could see the 3D as well. But since then I've seen lots of posts on various websites etc, saying that you definitely need both eyes working, and even then you need to hold it just right to see the effect. I'll obviously have a go on one to see what it looks like, but I am not holding out much hope. The plus side is that it means I'm in no rush to get one and so can wait for a price drop. |

Well I had a go at a 3DS pre-launch event tonight and am sorry to say Retro that you won't get the 3D effect with the one eye. I shut one eye with the 3D slide bar set to max and it just went back to 2D. But I can honestly say you're not missing much, whilst it looks good on some games (was good on Resident Evil Mercs, the augmented reality game the name of which I didn't catch and especially Zelda) some just made my eyes bleed and left me feeling disoriented. Seriously after 45 mins on a few games it was too much for me and I had to keep sliding down to 2D. The Raving Rabbits game was really bad! And whats more you have to keep the 3DS quite still when you find the '3D sweet spot' or else it blurs. And when playing SFIV when you're mashing buttons its very easy to lose the 3D effect. That one I found better in 2D. In fact remove the 3D aspect and I was very impressed with the graphics. Zelda looked great, but SFIV looked lovely, as did Resi Mercs. Not a patch on the shots and vids I've seen of the NGP though. The analogue stick is quite big and works superbly well. Best control on a hand hold I've come across and far better than the RSI inducing PSP. Like the augmented game, that was very different. Used the cameras to fix on a 'game card' on the table in front of me and battled enimies that come out of the card through the inbuilt cameras. Talking of the cameras, maybe because the room was dark but the camera quality and 3D pics seemed pretty poor. Also couple of things that impressed, in Zelda - go into first person mode to view the environment and rather than move the analogue stick, you simply need to move the 3DS around to pan round in game. Gimmicky maybe, but I liked it. Overall the 3D aspect just left me dazed and maybe younger people will be able to tolerate it. But I found the games better in 2D mode. Obviously some stuff you have to do in 3D like the augmented reality stuff. Best though were the PR birds who showed us around - hubba! They also had a Ryu and Ken all done up on a set done as a Japanese village, fighting each other. That was cool but not as good as having to go through a dark room being chased by a zombie and a Resi Evil 4 sack head chainsaw guy. Good job an actor done up as Leon and Claire Redfield was there to protect us. It was all a bit cheesy, but good fun none the less. Will I buy one? Hmmmm, not going to rush out. Will have to see Sony's offering first. And before tonight I was adamant I was going to get one. Sorry that post was all over the shop, but just a brain dump now that I'm home. Indie you have pretty much echoed what I have been reading across various sites this morning. People saying tey got eye ache after a short while, the cameras on it being of poor quality, hard to find the 3D sweet spot. It is obvious from complaints about stuff like the cameras though, that this is typical Nintendo. Building stuff to a price because they aren't prepared to lose money on the initial launch models. Sony can be dickheads at times, but with the PSP you just know it will lose them money at first, but it will blow away the 3DS specs wise. I can see the whole eye strain thing making the news at some point of enough people complain about it - I wonder how that will affect the long term prospects of the machine. I still think 3D is a fad and it seems odd Nintendo have built a whole handheld around it - even if you can turn the effect off. |
