UK website is live and they are now doing signups so that you can reserve your username and try out demos etc.

I have to say, I have gone from being a doubting Thomas to being impressed. I sit in bed of an evening with my tiny Asus netbook and obviously can never play games on it. But I installed the client on this machine anyway and tried using it over wi-fi (it does advise using wired for the best experience).

To my surprise it worked really well. Obviously the video quality is affected by the resolution of my screen, but I tried a sim style game (Tropico 4) and it played like a dream. Something I wouldn't normally be able to do.

Ok, on a desktop you will no doubt also notice some graininess of video quality I'm sure. But if you are like me and haven't updated your pc in years, this could be something worth considering.

I am sure FPS games won't be the best. But for slower paced games, and probably even some driving games to be honest, I reckon this could be really good.

It is very neat how you can see dozens of live screens of people playing games, and instantly zoom in and watch them. You can even add friends etc and see them playing.

Sign up is free and the client is a tiny download. Worth having a nosy for sure.

edit: here is the link http://onlive.co.uk/

edit edit: Just been playing Just Cause 2 on an Asus 1000H netbook! Honestly. within a couple of mins I didn't notice any lag at all. Sure the pic was a touch blurry, like watching a decent youtube HD video. But this has real potential if they sort out a decent library of games and make the $9.99 per month all you can eat subscription include up to date titles.

The icing on the cake is the instantaneous startup for all games. I'm sure some of you will find fault with it, but under the right circumstances I can see me being able to play some modern pc games for the first time in years :)

Seeing as my above post caused such a rush of replies here ;) I thought I'd give a follow up post as I have still been tinkering with this in the run up to its full launch.

One great big massive fly in the ointment has occurred. You know how Onlive is supposed to give users with lesser machines the ability to play up to date P.C games? Well my lesser specc'ed desktop P.C apparently isn't compatible with the Onlive service. Something to do with the older processor. So unless I upgrade my P.C, I can't use the Onlive service. How is that for irony :)

Still, been playing on my laptop, and with a wired connection, it still feels a little like black magic. No noticeable lag, and modern games running just fine on my tiny little netbook.

But yeah, a bit of a killer not being able to use my desktop really.

Has no one else tried it out of curiosity? It is free to sign up and there are plenty of free trials on there. I'm trying to spark up a conversation here you miserable bunch ;)

I tried briefly on the HP Touchpad that Liz got me when they went cheap and it didnt work...but then, very few things seem to work on a Touchpad it seems.

I tried everything to grab one of those and missed every chance that popped up. Android is being ported to it so I'm gutted I missed out.

T'is the future I reckon, I know the biggies are planning their own versions. Will definitely try it when I get the chance, but there's just SO much else to play at the mo.

I wouldn't fret too much; I'm bored of mine and its "not Apple-ness" so it's on ebay now. Hate Apple software, love the hardware that is my iphone.

Yeah but I need a touchpad (but money means I need a cheap one) and I'll take Android (and any hardware that isn't Apple ;) ) any time. Other touch pads even close to that price are bloody terrible to be honest.

Nah....it is worth a punt at £90 in the hope Android gets sorted properly on it. But they are going for silly money on eBay - when it is in fact (at the moment) a dead platform :)

I'd shoot myself in the face before I bought an Apple product :) If I can save up over the coming months I'll try and get a Samsung tablet. I've been following various threads and still haven't had any joy snapping up an HP pad :/ I think it is time to admit defeat.

Quick heads up. If you create a U.K onlive account, then until mid October sometime, you get your first game for £1. Worth signing up as there are some pretty new games on there that can be snagged for that bargain price.

Oh My. that's a bit surreal isn't it? Just been playing free trials of DiRT 2, Munch's Oddysee and JC2. They look a bit fuzzy and the frame rates aren't perfect but I'm doing it on a 5 year-old HP laptop that's never been asked to play a game before...

Q: How would you go about playing on a TV - how do you hook up and what controller would you use?

If you are going to the Eurogamer expo? They are giving away the standalone TV console plus controller to as many people as they can find - or so it seems. They are making a big song and dance about the giveaway, obviously wanting to hook people in. The standalone console is going to cost about £80 here so if you are going to that show its worth keeping an eye out. Here is what it looks like. Tiny thing with HDMI output.. http://www.advanced-television.com/index.php/2011/08/12/onlive-cloud-console-to-get-uk-launch/

Also if you pre-order Saints Row 3 they are giving away the console. Otherwise use VGA out from your laptop/desktop? II use a 360 pad by the way, all games seem to pick up the fact you are using a wired 360 pad and work straightaway.

Can't (daren't) go m8. Got too much to do and it tends to work out rather expensive the way I've done it in the past. Gonna try a wired pad right now.
