Has anyone been playing Dark Souls? Without doubt, my favorite game on this generation of consoles. Whilst it's not fair to compare, Skyrim just couldn't compete. Had a fair crack at it, completed the main story and Theives Guild missions (plus a few others) but for the challenge, epic bosses, isolation, atmosphere etc etc, I simply haven't played a game to equal Dark Souls.

I'm about 80 hours in and pretty near completing it and will be gutted when it's done.

Have to say though it's pretty dark and twisted - those are some f*cked up mofo's at From Software!

Hated it. Couldn't pause it ("design choice" apparently), accidentally touched an NPC with a sword who then CONTSTANTLY killed me from that (ONE!!!!!) save point on. Killed game. Returned to LoveFilm.

The End.

PS - 130+ hours into Skyrim and still love it.

PPS - Horses for courses.

Yes indeed mate, different strokes. You are more than entitled to be wrong :arse:

Hear what you say about NPC interaction - and you have to manage the encounters just so if there is a special weapon or item you want to get your hands on, so wiki's are essential as the games doesn't even come with instructions. But that’s one of the things I love - in age where we 'experience' a lot of games rather than actually play them for ourselves (Uncharted 3, I’m looking at you) a game like this is a rare thing. But NPC encounters are so few and far between, it’s makes it all the more special. There is hardly any narrative at all – which I love. The game speaks for itself and the storyline is not inundated with so much back story and politics (ala Skyrim), it makes you care all the more about whats going on. Well it does for me anyway.

But of course you are right. Horses for courses. it’s a game that has truly challenged me and like Skyrim has for many, immersed me in its universe.

A mate of mine has been trying to convert me to this game. But I simply don't have the patience. He has played nothing but this game since it launched - and that has been at the expense of some great games that have been out in the interim.

He says he will go back to this backlog of games he has built up. But the reality is that more games are due soon that he wants to play.

The thing with Skyrim (which is much more my kind of game) is that I can play it at my own pace. I can save wherever I wish. I can explore at my leisure and then pick up the story again when I want - all without the "trial and error" aspect of something like Dark Souls. It means I can dip in and out of other games at a whim. Rather oddly my mate questioned why I was playing Skyrim because "don't all the quests feel the same" - failing to realise that he was simultaneously telling me how he was approaching the same situations in Dark Souls again and again until he learned the correct way to tackle something :)

If I'm in a dungeon in Skyrim and get an invite for Forza etc, I can stop what I'm doing on the spot and pick it up again later on. Much more appealing.

I can totally see why people love Dark Souls so much. But it isn't for me at all. Hell I have just started playing Final Fantasy XIII-2 and even Square have added a save anywhere feature now. It fits in with how I play games these days. Having to fail again and again in order to eventually make progress is something I left behind me a few years ago :)

Perfectly said, Retro!

That sums it up for me to a T.

Went back to Skyrim last night after dabbling with Saints Row 3...perfect!

Totally hear you retro and it's all a question of personal taste. Don't get me wrong I think Skyrim is a great game and I invested plenty of time into it.

As for the dipping in and out thing, Dark Souls is no different. Okay, so you can't pause but you can save the game and when you reload it picks up straight from where you left it.

I took a break from Dark Souls to play Skyrim, Mario 3D, Skyward Sword etc. You can have too much of a good thing ;-)

Very close to completing Dark Souls now, will revisit Demon's Souls once it's done ... after ME2 and Ico though :-)
