Austria, 1892 A small village outside of Wels*

Thunder crashed as lightning light up the sky. The dirt streets of this place were empty, well, they were supposed to be. There had been many recent attacks upon those who had been venturing outside at night. The mayor of this village soon called a meeting after the 3rd attack and told everyone to remain inside their homes after the sun went down and that they couldn't come out until the sun was starting to come up. This caused a great amount of discomfort among the villagers, but they all seemed to obey it anyway. The crops were getting watered later, but it didn't seem to be harming them nor harming the cattle when they were milked later.

As the night sky was light up, a figure was walking towards this village. A hood was up over it's face so that it would be hard to see a face. The cloak that was attached to the hood came down past their feet. Completely hidden from sight, even when they walked.

Eyes looked about as the village light would soon be blown out one by one as everyone was starting to go to bed. Their head soon moved as if they were looking for someone who woud dare to leave their house.

The figures eyes soon fell upon what would be their victim of the night. A teenage boy who looked to be sneeking out. A grin soon appeared upon their lips as they soon seemed to disappear into the wind that was rustling up.

"Little boys shouldn't be out this late..." the figure spoke as they appeared behind the boy. The voice being female and rather young sounding.

Before the boy had a chance to even escape, the figure swept him away from the village where his yells and pleads for help wouldn't be heard.

Dropping him to the ground, the figure would approch him as he tried to scramble to his feet. A delcate hand was extended before she grabbed his shoulders and soon held him to the wet ground. Eyes looked around before fangs soon were sunk into his neck. A feast indeed. As the night went on, the storm wouldn't be letting up.

As the storm raged outside, a young woman was turning in for the night. She knew the rules, just like everyone else. At night, everyone was to stay in their houses; not that she'd want to go out in this storm anyway.

She'd already changed into her sleepwear, the long nightgown hanging to her ankles and covering her arms, and was now letting her hair down. Her shorter, auburn locks fell to her shoulders, and she ran a hand through them to push her longer bangs back. She set all that held her hair up on her little dresser and turned towards the oil lamps that sat beside her bed.

She dimmed it, leaving only a soft glow in the room as she turned to sit by the window. She pulled the little stool she had over to the window, leaning her arms on the sill as she looked out at the storm. Lightning streaked across the sky and her eyes followed it, drawing her attention and holding it until it was gone. When the thunder boomed, her house shook ever so slightly, but she didn't worry about it since it happened in all thunder storms.

In one flash of lightning, she thought she saw someone out in the street, however, when her soft, brown eyes went to look again, there was nothing there.

"Trick of the light," she muttered quietly, not wanting to wake anyone else in the house. It was ridiculous; they could sleep through a storm, but as soon as they heard someone they would awaken.

She continued to watch the storm as the rain streaked down the window and pelted against the roof. While her family was sound asleep, she was wide awake, knowing that it would be a while before she would be able to sleep. The storm would keep her up; not because of fear, but just because of the noise.

She wondered silently if that creature was out in the storm, making another attack. She was old enough that she could go to these meetings now that her parents used to shelter her from. Hell, she was old enough that they were looking for suitors for her, however, her interest lay with the attacks at the moment. What was it that was attacking?

As many times as she heard that the local authorities would handle it and that she should keep her nose out of it, it was something different. Something outside the usual mundane days in the village, so of course it interested her.

But as she sat there during the storm, she didn't see any sort of creature that would be attacking and it wasn't long before her lids closed and she was leaning on her arms, asleep on the sill.

The storm continue to rage on and didn't seem like it was going to let up anytime. The thunder roared which shook more houses and the lightning lit up the sky.

The figure pulled away from the dead boy's neck as she licked her lips. She stood up before looking around. Picking up the boy's body she threw it down the large hill into the centre of the village where he would be found in the morning. She turned her back on the village before walking off. Her body was soaked even with the cloak that she wore.

She ventured towards an old house which no one ever came near because it was built on a barrial ground. A place that to the village is forbidden to even step on. The door was opened as the figure stepped inside, the door closing behind her slowly.

As the storm continued on, the young woman continued to sleep without problem. The thunder and lightning didn't wake her up, only seemed to enter her dreams, causing strange images to flicker through her sleeping state. The thunder became the drums of a large band, the lightning and large and flickering bonfire that was set for the occasion. Personally, she was dancing around this fire, however, this dream ceased when someone screamed.

As she sat bolt upright, still at the window, she'd thought that it was just in her dream that the scream had come from, however, as she looked from her window to see what all the uproar was about in the village square. At first she could only see the mass of people that were gathering, but nearly fully awoken by the commotion, she snapped into action, running to change as quickly as she could before dashing down the stairs and outside. The only really presentable thing about her in this state was her dress, for she hadn't taken the time to fix her hair or even to put shoes on.

She pushed through the crowd, trying to see what was going on. When she came to the local baker, she stopped in her tracks, trusting the older man to tell her what was going on.

"Oh, Renate," he commented when she touched his arm to get his attention. "You should go back into the house. Gruesome stuff, this is."

"Another killing?" she breathed, though somehow felt she already knew.

The man nodded gravely. "Not something a young lady should be seeing."

"Who is it, dear Josef?" she implored, trying to sneak a look, however her vision was still blocked by a mass of people.

"I don't know, meself," Josef replied.

Renate tuned out the baker for a moment, listening to those around her and trying to hear anything that might be being passed from the front of the crowd to the back. So far, there was nothing but panicked gossip and though it was reasonable, Renate became frustrated since that wasn't what she wanted to hear.

The figure just sighed some as she removed her cloak. She walked around the house, her boots hitting the ground before she lowered herself so that she was sitting on her bed. She pulled her hair down from the mess she put it in and it flowed down her back slowly and in waves. Her boots were then unlaced and kicked off as she looked around the still dark house of hers. Laying back, she closed her eyes before passing out. Happy, full, and tired.

Miffed, Renate stood in the kitchen making breakfast. It wasn't long after she'd made it out to the crowd that her father had pulled her away with insistance that she shouldn't stick her nose in this business or else the creature might come after her as well. He also scolded her for being out in public so poorly dressed, and was annoyed that she didn't seem to care.

After being dragged away, she'd headed upstairs and dressed properly before heading downstairs to begin making breakfast with her sister. Well, her somewhat sister anyway.

Before Renate had been born, her father had been killed and then her mother died in childbirth. Because of this, the newborn had been adopted into a family that had been friends with her parents. Since she'd been with them since she was born, Renate knew this family as nothing other than her own. She was well aware that she'd been adopted into the family, but since she didn't know her parents at all, she referred to these people as family, down to using family titles when addressing them.

She and her sister stood side by side in making breakfast, but Renate kept glancing out the nearby window to see what was going on in the street. She saw as the body was being moved, but there were so many people crowded around it that she still couldn't see who it was. Her father had moved into the crowd after he'd ushered her off, so she knew that he knew, but he wasn't sharing anything.

Obviously the family would know who it was, since they knew pretty much everyone in the village, but it didn't seem that it was someone close to their family because her father wasn't completely grief striken. She could easily tell that he was perturbed, even as he tried to hide it, but he wasn't distraught.

Even as the people carrying the body moved out of view, Renate stared out at the street, the blood still visible where the body had been. Judging from the size of the bloody area, she guessed that it wasn't a child.

"Ren!"

The young woman jumped out of her reverie at the sound of her sister's voice. She looked down at the stove, seeing and now smelling the smoke that was coming from the part of the dish that she was making. Cursing quietly, she quickly removed the food from the stove, poking through it with a utensil to see the damage as her brother laughed in the background. Her sister fanned away the smoke after opening the window.

"Sorry, sorry!"

"Really, Ren, you ought to pay more attention and stop daydreaming," her brother, a handful or so of years younger than herself poked fun.

"Especially when making our breakfast!" her sister added.

Renate sighed, looking sourly down at the food. "Well, it's only a little charred."

"A little by whose standards?" her brother demanded, though was still laughing.

"All right, all right, that's enough," their father walked in the room after hearing the commotion and smelling the burnt food.

"What the? I'm not eating this!" her brother protested when Renate put the plate down before him with the burned food on it.

"Just put some sauce on it or something. You'll live," Renate huffed, sitting down herself after serving everyone alongside her sister.

"If I don't live, I'm blaming you," he scowled.

"Fine then," Renate shrugged, dropping it and turning to her father. "Won't you tell me anything about the attack, father?"

The older man sighed, "How many times must I say no before you get it?"

"Dear, you really mustn't concern yourself with these things," her mother finally put in. She was generally a quiet woman, only speaking when she felt it necessary. Apparently she felt it necessary.

Renate dropped that as well, falling into silence as she and her family ate their burned breakfast.

As the day went on, this 'monster' continued to sleep. She didn't stir nor would she had woken up. Her pet, A Rottweiler slept at her side while she slept. Making no noise but keeping an eye out on things.

When the sun set, her eyes opened some before she sat up. She stretched as yawned some before cracking some of her joints. She looked down at her pet before standing up.

"Alright, Princess.."

She moved to the door before having it open and let her dog out as she watched it run around to do her business. Kristy just watched the area to make sure there were no hunters around before closing the door when the dog came back in. She then moved to the food dish before filling it back up along with the water. She hadn't even thought about leaving yet. To many people were still up

Still awake on that night was Renate, sitting silently in her room and staring out her window again. Though it was dark, and though her family would expect her to be asleep (or to soon be asleep), she was steadfastly determined to stay awake; to at least catch sight of the beast that was attacking the village folk. While a part of her wanted to charge out and confront the beast, she knew that there was very little she could actually do. She didn't have any weapons experience, nor did she know how to fight. No. She would watch.

Maybe with watching, she figured, she could see the beast and give the villagers some idea of what was attacking. No one seemed to know what it was, so maybe if they did then they could get rid of it, and she wanted to get rid of it, lest she or someone she knew ended up being the next victim.

So far, there wasn't any activity outside. Of course everyone had been ushered in for the curfew, so no one was in the streets. Renate could see as lights began flickering off in the households one by one down the street. Her own light was off, so if anyone could see in, it would likely be only a shadow they would see. She began to wonder if all she would see in the streets were shadows, too. All the same, she was determined to stay awake.

As the night continued on slowly, the monster decided that it was her time to find herself a meal. She looked to her dog and kneeled down. Necklaces jingling a little.

"Alright, Princess...Mommy is going out. Protect the ome now." She scratched her dog behind the ears before moving towards the door.

Grabbing up her cloak, her slipped it on before leaving the house. Her feet moved her quickly through the dead forest before she reached the hill that was leading town into the village. With a glint in her eye she grinned.

"Now...for my next meal and victim"

She startled herself awake when her head thudded against the window pane before her. Renate jolted, realizing suddenly that she had fallen asleep briefly and she now pushed away from the cool glass, slapping her cheeks slightly.

"Stay awake, girl," she muttered to herself.

With a yawn and a stretch, Renate pushed herself out of her chair and stretched again, this time, full body. Running a hand through her auburn hair, she headed to the door of her bedroom, hoping that it wouldn't squeak when she opened it. It creaked a little, causing her to cringe and hold completely still, but when no one stirred, she continued.

She headed through the dark house to the kitchen, where she grabbed a glass and filled it with water from the tap. Placing one hand on the edge of the counter, she stared out the kitchen window into the dark street as she sipped at the water in her glass. In her mind, she was once again going through the list of things that could be attacking the villagers.

Rumours of wolves and cougars were spreading, but she didn't think that either of these were the culprit to these attacks. If it were wolves or cougars or any other sort of animal, then there would only be bones left as far as she was concerned. Animals didn't leave a carcass, they stripped it.

"It just doesn't make sense," she mumbled into her glass. "What in the world is attacking us?"
