| There are many stories in the wizarding world. Probably the biggest is that of Harry James Potter, the boy who lived and conquered the dark lord. However, Harry's story was not the only central one happening. Whilst he and his friends were struggling year after year, other students experienced their own problems and triumphs. Each student is unique, they all have their past, present and future. It's time to take a turn in the magical world that wasn't in the original books. Join The Magic! Find out more |

Contains Spoilers for almost all books! Okay, so I have this theory. A theory that probably won't be confirmed in book 7. My theory is that the sorting hat can see the future and perform Divination. For example the sorting hat can see the "great things" that Harry would do in his school career. It also sorted Malfoy into Slytherin before it barely touched his head. Clearly this means the events in HPB where he was plotting the attack on Dumbledore and Hogwarts on orders of Voldemort. Also, I'm pretty sure it can read the past, which would judge people like the Weaslys. What do you think? It probably can link more of the character's fates aswell but these are just examples. |

I dunno, though you have a point. I used to think the Sorting Hat is just really smart because he has a part of each founder's mind/intelligence. Also, I think he sees what's in our mind and heart(?) plus (I can't remember who said it) I think a character said he could be getting information from listening in on the past Heads' conversations. About the sorting families into the same House, could be genes.

I think maybe he can and I think he/it will have a bigger part in the final book. |

Yeah because it is in the Headmaster's office it overhears a lot of conversations. I think it overheard a lot in Chamber of Secrets (not 100% sure, just guessing). It kinda makes you think about how the Hat can see what you are and what you will become. I think the moral is that we all have a fate, including Harry.
I agree. Since Harry may return to Hogwarts, he may ask the hat for advice and what his fate may be (that is, if my theory is correct). |

Yeah. It proberly can. Thats why it put Malfoy in slytherin. Maybe thats why it Nevile in gryffindor because it saw his future. Which I think will surprise us. |

Yeah, he could ask the hat for some advice since it has proven itself to be useful in "battles" (Godric Gryffindor's sword). Though I still stand by my instinct(?) that it can't see the future, just incredibly intelligent (like Dumbledore). Also, maybe Harry could talk to Dumbledore through his portrait. He can't have lost his brain capacity just because he's dead, can he? Anyway, that's a different topic. |

Well I have been re-reading Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince lately, and I finished HBP last night. I agree, I was thinking the same thing and all the other portraits seem fine. Also I think the White Tomb will hold some kind of key. |

Yeah, I was thinking about that and the fact that Harry saw a phoenix as the tomb flamed. So, generally, I think the portrait, the White Tomb and Fawkes will play a great part in Deathly Hallows. |

It's a hat. A magic hat, yes, but still just a HAT! And lets be honest with ourselves... a hat that can see the future? Still, it's a damn smart piece of felt... you never know. I won't completely refute the possibility, just put me down as "sceptical". |
