I Hate Mankind; I really do!

OK, this isn’t a joke. I am really a misanthrope. I have a good reason too.

While some people are indeed working towards a better world, other people are working just as hard destroying their work for their own benefit. They don’t do this because they want the benefit; they do so because of vanity. I have seen people destroying work of other in MMO games, as if our life isn’t rife with enough treachery to start with.

http://eve.klaki.net/heist/

Look at this, why the hell do you want to grief someone in a game? What is the bloody point? What horrible waste of brainpower is this?

I have always hated intrigues; I have never hated it more then now. Political intrigue, on any scale, has never produced any value, but there seemed to be endless talent for it. This kind of thing disrupts trust and spread fear, and people seemed to never realize that it is not efficient.

Far too much work has being spent on fighting the system, rather then fighting the problems, such as cancer. Even with this much effort, Idiots and psychopaths still run entire countries.

Some say we need better morals, I say we need a better race. One that has no secrets, does not tell lies and has no fear. Computers are closer to that ideal then we are.

Actually, surveys on MMO player behaviour seem to indicate that only roughly 5% of people are complete psychopaths. So surprisingly many humans are at least innocuous. And there are always a small number of gratuitous twinkers, who give to others out of the fathomless goodness of their hearts. Many guilds provide the same services to some extent or other.
The thing is, existing MMOs are all combat-based, so taking people down will always, on average, be a more profitable endeavour than altruism. Until we have an MMO that revolves around, say, cooperatively shaping works of interactive artwork- what URU was hoping to be, or say, a next-gen version of Stardock's Society- we're hardly going to hear about many works of startling virtual compassion.

It's just that mutual cooperation and respect are least likely to develop in short-term, competitive, anonymous interactions with low personal risk. I.E, most MMOs. Eve Online is the single most technologically advanced and socially dysfunctional MMO currently in existence. It practically mandates this kind of casual backstabbing in order to maintain a stimulating game-world.

Humans could certainly be improved upon, but you can hardly blame animals for being what they are.

The natural propensity for some to enjoy the suffering of others causes profound frustration. It boggles the mind, what’s so fun in aggravating someone else? I am worried about implication of such behavior and its cause rather then how it was apparent in a game.

In most games we continently take on each other (counterstrike, and so on…) but we cause no agony in the process. It’s only when people’s intention become malevolent, it crosses the line.

I was in a spying/assassination guild in another game, Dark Throne. There, these things are quite normal. At one time during an infiltration I was actually second in command of the infiltrated guild. It's just a game, why whine about what you lost?

The same Traits, as I explained, causes griefing both IG and IRL.
The very Possibility of extracting pleasure from suffering of others is disturbing.

I agree, Cooker, that too many do this IRL. As a lawyer, I see more than my share of it. That is the easy stuff to see, because that is what makes the news. This in turn makes cynicism or even misanthropy the easy option.

The hard part is seeing the good things that people do, and those are the things that make being human something to be proud of. We are a long way from completely overcoming our animal natures, and we may never get there (would we still be human if we did?). But despite this, people do good things every day. Not just Mother Theresa, but lots of people.

One of the reasons I attend my church? Because that's where I find a high percentage of people who see value in serving their fellow humans. My church supports a food pantry that feeds the disadvantaged, an after school program for kids who would otherwise be latchkey, 2 "sister" churches abroad in 3d world conditions, plus hurricane victims and numerous other benevolent enterprises. We sponsor Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Alcoholics Anonymous, and numerous other groups that do good work and just need somewhere to meet. All through generous, voluntary donations of time and money.

When I get out and volunteer, I get to hang with other people who volunteer. It's a pretty good feeling, really. Give it a shot. :)

Thanks Short, although we don’t share a lot of views, that is some hopeful news.
Right now I don’t like the idea of going out and getting stabbed in the back. Maybe when I grow some more guts, I will try that.

That's generally the good part of people who volunteer for something-they aren't out to stab others in the back, that's why they volunteer instead of doing something that benefits only themselves. NOTE: exceptions exist to all rules, even this one.

I wouldn’t mind being stabbed if the goal wasn’t to frustrate me.
If someone is an egoist, I can play the game too, if someone is a sadist, that is another game entirely.

I just love stabbing people of the opposing side in the back (in games).
Just like those times in Battlefield where I'd mine a tank with explosives and wait for a bold enemy trooper to rush into my base and steal that tank.

I think most people wouldn't mind being stabbed in the back by people on the opposing side in a competitive game. What people would mind is getting stabbed in the back by people supposedly on the same side. Although it is a very small percentage of people that are truly malevolent, it only takes one to spoil the experience for everyone.

If I make a post here, and there are no new topics in the Tavern, it'll be reported in the forum main page the following:

In: >> I Hate Mankind
By: Apple

Which appear to casual readers that Apple hates mankind.
Therefore, I must resist the temptation to post in this topic...

WARRRGGGHHH!!!
I just did it!!
