The thing is, existing MMOs are all combat-based, so taking people down will always, on average, be a more profitable endeavour than altruism. Until we have an MMO that revolves around, say, cooperatively shaping works of interactive artwork- what URU was hoping to be, or say, a next-gen version of Stardock's Society- we're hardly going to hear about many works of startling virtual compassion.

Games like that do exist, they are just harder to find. Take City of Heroes, you can't attack other characters or steal from them and you don't get any advantage from them dieing but you have to work together in teams where the gains are split evenly to get anywhere in the game. The entire game is based on co-operation with some characters having very limited damage capability but primarily heal and aid other characters.

There are exceptions. People who deliberately get others killed are rare because it usually means they die to but it does happen. Other people join teams and get a plit of the rewards without doing anything. But in a game with hundreds of people online, I have only found 4 that would go under the catagory of, 'Complete Moron.'

Yes, but the game still revolves around killing things as the ultimate criterion of success and advancement. And I was almost certain there was some PvP element involved...

No PvP at ALL in City of Heroes except in the colleseum where people 'choose' fights where both must accept. These fights have no gain for the players but are just for fun.

I've got to remember to check that magazine regularly.
Just to increase the difficulty level, no using e-mails or writing notes...

You know, I was helping someone building a technology. He didn’t have money then so I helped him for free, now he had money he gave me a token check, not even enough to cover my living expenses.

I didn’t sign a contract then because I think I would get more if I asked when he had money, and guess what happened?

I hope everyone doesn’t stab everyone else because they are all used being stabbed in the back. If that is the case, then our destruction will only be good riddance.

Well, you did agree to work for free, so a token check is more than you agreed to.

On the other hand, if the check is for US$0.01, than it is plain insulting...

If you agree to work for free then why should he pay you?

Never be vague when you talk money. What one person considers a fair price the other person would consider outrageous. Your first mistake was working for free. It implies you don't want the money.

I'm not mocking you Cooker. It's just one of those things you run in to when you start getting older. Another thing I've noticed is that many times the charitable work I've done is the most troublesome. Some people seem to think that even though you are working for free, your work should be perfect and completed in record time.

I agree with Dumble Dwarf that you should not be vague with money. If money was important, you should have made it clear right from the start. Since money is out of the picture, the only platform left from which you may make your argument is that of Respect. And that, you can argue if the intent behind the token was insult - of course, you have to prove it first.

---

On a side note, I think it is reasonable to expect some quality in charity work. However, the key word is moderation. It should be pretty reasonable to expect a fresh roll with a palatable soup but wanting a five-course dinner according to a twelve-minute schedule after that is a bit too much.

The quality of a person's work is a reflection of the person's character.
