… Mandarin, one of the most difficult languages to learn

OK, I would like to announce opinion on this matter. A language is a tool, and easier it is to learn, the better. I am not sure why a nation with an easier language should ever encourage the study of a more difficult one just because it's popular.

I had painful personal experience with Mandarin myself. Being a native Chinese, I have never being able to write it properly or type it quickly. It’s really INSANE IMO to encourage anyone to learn it.

I suppose some good may come out of this if more people know both. But even more good would be done if every person on earth spoke an easily learnt language.

If that were possible, we wouldn't have so many versions of English today.

Well it was worse before it was "simplified" in the 1950's and 1960's.

And even worse before Qin Shi Huang and Li Si unified China and came up with the what is now "traditional" Chinese in 220 BC.

Our species needs, and deserves, a citizenry with minds wide awake and a basic understanding of how the world works.

Yes, point being, more time you spend learning a language, less time you have doing something else actually productive, like engineering.
