Yes, the winter (and summer) solstice were very important times for agrarian societies (since you had to make sure you planted the crops at the correct time or you might starve). The trouble lies in that you can't conveniently subdivide the solar year in terms of any other conveniently measurable celestial phenomena. The rotation of the moon and earth are both inadequate. The Julian Calendar was fairly close to measuring a year at 365.25 days, but over the centuries it was realized that this wasn't correct (it's about 11 minutes too long). Even the existing Gregorian Calendar fails over time and needs periodic modifications to remain accurate. I find it amusingly ironic that there have been many technological advances in our push to accurately measure the passage of time, but it's all based on an inherently flawed system of measurement. |
