the hypotenuses are not really straight :D

They bend at slightly different angles.

3 / 7 = 0.42857142857142857142857142857143
2 / 5 = 0.4

You assume the two volumes are equal but they are not. They would only be equal if the hypotenuses of the two triangles formed a straight line. I don't know the correct term but I highly suspect the hypotenuse of the triangle isn't a straight line. Try calculating the slopes of the green and yellow hypotenuses and seeing if they are equal. Essentially it's an optical illusion.

Try making HUGE shapes out of paper and making that first triangle. You'll notice that that are small gaps. And when you add them up, the emptiness makes a complete square.

If you look closely in a magnified image, the first "line" is noticeably crooked.
