Sci-fi, What Does The Term Mean For You?

So we all know what "Sci-fi" is, right? But what do we all put into the term? What do you think makes up a good sci-fi story?

Please be serious, as I'm doing this for a school project (but take your time, it isn't due until the middle of January). And please no links to external sites. I want YOUR opinion. It would also be nice if you told me what you think other people's impressions are. I need as much data as possible.

Science fiction is really unpopular in Britain, most people hate it. They see it as "sad".

My shot at it...

Science fiction is, broadly speaking, a branch of speculative writing (fiction) that is based on known principles of the way the world operates (science). Although sci-fic and its counterpart fantasy are very similar in that they both present worlds of the fantastic and seemingly impossible, science fiction is distinguished from fantasy in that, while fantasy relies on the use of unexplainable phenomena (magic) to advance the plot, science fiction is set in a world where the workings of that world are well-known and (at least loosely) based on known modern scientific principles. Science fiction is most often set in a future world, but this need not be the case for all science fiction stories (time travel stories, for instance).

On a personal level, I like science fiction because I like creating universes myself. I've always enjoyed coming up with unique cultures, languages, places, people, etc., so seeing others who share a talent and/or passion for it kinda appeals to me. Plus, I've always been one who's enjoyed reading books; combine the two, and it seems I'm naturally attracted to pretty much any form of speculative fiction (although I don't read much fantasy at all).

As for a twin, I don't think so; our age difference automatically cancels that out. However, you don't, by any chance, happen to have a low-pitched nasal voice and a preference for glasses over contacts because they make you look intelligent, do you? ;)

I don't know much about my voice (mostly because I never think of it), but I do prefer glasses over contacts. ;)

I don't like fantasy because it always makes wolves look evil.

You probably wouldn't like Code Lyoko then, cause in France (where the cartoon was made) nearly all the wolves were killed off due to the fact that the French thought of them as a bad omen. In that show there've been a few episodes where wolves attack the characters. (They were taken over by this thing though and when the thing was stopped they just went to sleep/walked around unthreateningly)

This is a perfect opportunity to invite everyone to the Sci-Fi forums!

Scandinavians believe that they are pests with no place in nature.

Apparently you have never seen the Norwegian wolf debate. It has gone on for years, and it will never end.

BTW, keep wolf politics out of this thread and answer my questions.

Code Lyoko is considered science fiction though.

It is? Well, SF is a very wide term, so that's not surprising.

Basically its a bunch of kids who find this massive beastly supercomputer that stores a VR world called Lyoko. There are a bunch of scanners that allow humans to be transferred to and from Lyoko. Trouble is, there's this AI called XANA that has malfunctioned for some reason and is able to gain access to the real world through electronic devices using any of the 40 tower thingies on Lyoko, and the only person who can deactivate these towers is another inhabitant of Lyoko called Aeilita, who can use the towers as a sanctuary (XANA's peeps can't get in there) and use them to initiate Code Lyoko, which enables a back in time function on the supercomputer. (for some strange reason the kids who know about this don't have their memories erased everytime while everyone else does) So in order to stop XANA from killing everyone they need to go to Lyoko and help Aeilita get to the activated tower safely. Oh and one last thing, if you die in real life before the BIT can be activated you're gone, and if you fall off into the bottom of any of Lyoko's five sectors you're digital form will be lost within untold terrabytes of data. (You can get killed in Lyoko and come back, just not fall off the cliff or anything.)

Sounds very SF to me. Not hardcore, but the kind of thing that might bring you into it. Personally I don't think it sounds very good, since it has such simple rules. The SF I like goes a little deeper than that. But that's only my humble opinion, feel free to disagree.

No I just put up the cliffs notes version, there's a lot more to it than that. I also really like the character development in the show.
