They first formed as a British blues rock influenced band but when they got a new drummer (Neil Peart) in 1974 they changed their musical direction to one influenced by British progressive rock while staying hard rock. The main non music influence of the band is science fiction and their music contains sci-fi based lyrics and sci-fi sounding instruments.
