Those who have read my faction site for the Post Wars should know that Tim Rayzor was made up long before the Post Wars even started. This is that story.

The True Tale of Tim Rayzor: Prelude

The dystopian prediction of what the 21st century on Earth would end up like had come true. Its population had topped 12 billion, but half of it died during the next decade due to famine, rising sea-levels, but most importantly: Due to war. Everything humanity had accomplished over the course of two millenia was destroyed in just 10 years. Anything that could be salvaged was destroyed and used to fuel the neverending war for the few resources left on the planet.

But all was not lost. A few people managed to stay sane and build up humanity's first interstellar spaceship from the material scraps left on the ravaged Earth. It would take a century for it to reach its destination, but they saw it as humanity's only hope. They filled its databanks with as much information as they could, so that the people it bore would not have to start from scratch. Still much knowledge was lost beyond hope of retrieval.

The spaceship, named Utopia, was the single biggest vessel humanity had ever built, and it had to be, for it would carry 1 million people to the nearest habitable planet, which had been found 30 years earlier. The construction took longer than that, mostly because so many resources had to be devoted to keep the crazed militias seeing it as another thing to tear down for salvage away. How many brave men and women who gave their lives to give humanity a new start was never recorded, but their sacrifice was not in vain. After 37 years of construction the Utopia finally took off, headed for Tau Ceti. Around that star a planet known to be Earth-like circled.

After more than a hundred years in transit a million spacefarers finally landed on the planet quickly dubbed Terra Nova, "New Earth". All of the original colonists had died of old age on the way, so nobody had any memories of the Earth they had left, except for what they had in the databanks of the ship. This was truly a new beginning. The ship itself was left standing as a memorial of the trip here, and quickly humans spread over the planet.

Over the following centuries humanity continued spreading amongst the stars, slowly losing track of all the stars they had colonized. Ironically Terra Nova was the first planet to be forgotten in the black darkness of space. But it continued to thrive nevertheless, otherwise the greatest person ever known to humanity would've had a different home. Not that it mattered where he came from, it's what he did that was so remarkable.

If this made you interested I'll keep on posting, this is only the beginning. ;)

The True Tale of Tim Rayzor Part I

Things had been going downhill the last century, but now it was time to stop it. Ever since Yarlon Bellafar had been elected president of Terra Nova in 512 AC the electoral system had become more and more corrupt, and first now people started realizing what had been obvious for decades: That there was no democracy any more. Anything that really mattered was decided behind closed doors, the elections were just a front. Of course I was just a boy when it first started, but as I grew up it became more and more obvious that power was slowly being moved from the legally elected government to those who could pay to get their will done. All this while giving great speeches about prosperity and progress, all of which quickly became cliché, but which people still viewed as the truth without realizing they were just doing someone else's bidding.

But those days were over. After almost a hundred years it had become too obvious that the government was not working as intended, and the revolts began. The major corporations who were behind this ruse at once realized that their cover had been blown, and put up heavy resistance, but not enough to stop the angry mobs from rampaging through the streets. Still it was a literal blood bath as the mindless crowds threw themselves against the corporations' headquarters in wave after wave. In the end they broke through and blew up the buildings. Victory was at hand, but I knew it would not last. Sooner or later someone would pull off the same trick again, and history would repeat itself. Someone had to do something, and that someone had to be me. Democracy was fundamentally flawed, benevolent dictatorship was the way to go.

Why was I the only who could fix this mess? That has a simple answer. I stopped aging at 30, which meant I wouldn't die of age, so I could stay in my position to keep society as I wanted it. But first I had to get into a position of power, and this revolution was the perfect opportunity for that. I proved myself as a strong leader, and people flocked around me. It annoyed me that they were the same gullible kind of people who had brought us into this mess in the first place, but I didn't let my annoyance show. At least these people wouldn't start making trouble when I got to power.

Soon I found out that most people were of the gullible kind. No wonder things had ended up as they did. Well, at least they were easy to manipulate, something I got quite good at during the two years it took to get me established in my position as Archduke of Terra Nova. I got many questions about this strange choice of title, why not King or Emperor? The reason was I didn't want to bite over more than I could chew, and the fact that I liked the sound better. And the people loved me. I was their immortal Archduke, who just wanted everybody to be happy. That was also my intention, by keeping the people happy they would not revolt, but they would still do as I told them, because they wanted to obey me, not because they were forced to. This had the added benefit of having a very loyal population, one that wouldn't give away secrets so easily, something that came in handy not long after.

The colonies had split up, and left Terra Nova behind, something that would not last for long. All factions wanted to reunite humanity, but under their own banner, so war was in the air. I ordered an army to be raised, something that happened just in time, because Terra Nova got attacked first, because it was a single planet. The attack was not ver well-coordinated, clearly the "New Humanity", as the attacking faction called itself, had underestimated us a lot. We easily pushed back their attack by using guerilla style tactics, something that heightened people's loyalty even more. It was from these small skirmishes that we got our name, "Rayzor's Raiders", or just "the Raiders". Because of this I renamed Terra Nova "Raidercore", because it was the core of Raider activity. Soon we were feared among all other factions for our quick and unexpected strikes, so they left us mostly alone and fought between themselves. But I knew the peace wouldn't last. Sooner or later one faction would win out, and then they turn their eyes towards Raidercore, and I didn't want that. I was aiming at creating the perfect society, Utopia on Raidercore, and getting ruled from somewhere else would destroy that dream. I couldn't let that happen.

Yes, very interesting stuff. Kinda reminds me of the part in Terminator 3 except with no machines.

The True Tale of Tim Rayzor Part II

Nobody had ever been able to explain my apparent immortality. I had taken a genetical test, but the doctors claimed they could find nothing clear in my DNA, but they told me it was probably the result of the many minor mutations they found. They couldn't tell me anything conclusive though, so I left it at that. I would use my immortality to the best of Raidercore, and hopefully the rest of the human race.

Rayzor's Raiders quickly became a threat throughout settled space. Quick in and quick out they made sure nobody got the upper hand, thereby making sure there could never be a winner, which meant that the future of Raidercore was assured. We became like a joker in the game, nobody knew whose side we would be on next. Several interfactional meetings were held to try to unite against us, but nothing did ever come out of them, not just because they couldn't agree on who was to lead the attack, which meant sending the main attack force, something nobody wanted to because they knew it would mean they would lose out after we were crushed. The fact that we also harassed the diplomatic transports also helped our cause.

None of the other factions wanted a direct conflict with us even though we were clearly the weakest faction. The reason for this was that they knew that they had to outnumber us at least 10 to 1 to be sure of victory, and even then with big casualties, which would weaken them against the other factions. Everybody knew we were the biggest problem, but they couldn't solve it the direct way because it would mean they would lose in the competition with the other factions. I was sure this wouldn't last forever though. Sooner or later someone would say "enough is enough" and get rid of us, no matter the consequences, and we had to prepare for that day. Our forces were highly trained, especially against taking out bigger ships. The Raider navy consisted solely of several types of fighters, all specially tailored to take out one special kind of target. We had anti-fighter-fighters, anti-capship-fighters, anti-defplat-fighters, and so on. This way we didn't have to rely on carriers which needed protection, thereby tying up part of the fleet. The downside was that our fighters were bigger in size than the other factions' fighters because they all needed their own Time Accelerator to move across interstellar distances.

The Time Accelerator (or just "TA") was the most amazing discovery ever to be made. Nobody really knew how it worked, but there were an abundance of different theories. I didn't care though, knowing that it worked was enough for me. It let stuff somehow circumvent the speed of light, thereby enabling ships to travel between the stars in minutes instead of years. The most popular theory about how the TA worked was that it worked kinda like a "Warp Drive", a term invented back on Old Earth centuries ago, but just like all the other theories it had lots of flaws. Nobody had ever been able to detect the distortion in space-time that a Warp Drive would create for instance. The scientists who had originally stumbled across the TA had theorized that it only changed time, hence the device's name, the question was just "How?". This was probably the closest explanation ever, and in the beginning people tried to use it to create a time machine with, but nobody could succesfully make one, so the idea was quickly forgotten. In my opinion the TA works by distorting stuff in the space-time continuum in ways we humans have to means of understanding, so I'm just happy it works.

After three centuries of constant squabble between the factions, three major power blocs emerged. The Haldifor Union, the Yullitek Alliance, and the Mexco Pact, with Raidercore just on the outside of the Alliance. This presented a new threat, because now we could easily be squashed without compromising their ability to protect themselves. Now a different strategy was in order. We had to keep the three power blocs focused on each other so they didn't turn their eyes towards Raidercore, which meant no more guerilla warfare. We had to keep low. An epoch was over. The years from about 610 to about 920 AC would forever be known as "the Raider Years" in my mind.

I wasn't insinuating that at all. Just saying that that's what the intro reminded me of- good stuff so far.

The True Tale of Tim Rayzor Part III

The big unions could never agree on anything, but things never escalated to a full-scale war. It was kinda like the Cold War back on Old Earth, it would end up with mutually assured destruction if it ever did. Because of this people started migrating to Raidercore. They had heard it was a paradise, which it was pretty close to be, and they came in big droves. This made me start an immigration block, I didn't want my beloved world to become overcrowded. There were currently 4 billion people living on Raidercore, and it was estimated that the planet could hold a maximum of 12 billion, a number which would be reached far too quickly if I allowed immigration to continue.

Ironically all the protests to this came from the Corian population, not from any of the big power blocs. Public opinion was that not allowing people to move here was rascism, and they wanted none of that. Why should anybody be refused the Corian way of life just because they weren't born here? I tried to explain that the Corian way of life wouldn't become much different than that of the Yullitek, where most of the immigrants came from, way of life if I let the immigrants in, but people just closed their ears. And of course someone saw the opportunity to grasp power for himself. Garon Tylfele, one of my political opponents over many years, started mass rallies under the motto "A united Humanity", and people flocked to them. It was just like during the Revolution. Nobody listened to their own sense, they just let their gang mentality run rampant. Riots followed, and Tylfele knew how to take advantage of that. As devious as me that guy. He told everybody how I was unable to keep society stable, and the riots got even worse, which in turn just fired up under his claims, and so on. I had to stop this before it went totally out of control.

I was too late. They stormed my offices, and because they did it the usual way, which meant massacring everybody on their way, I had plenty of time to make my way out. A cowardly way of doing it, but I knew that only I could make things right again after Tylfele had gotten to power, which he did. He restored order, and everybody loved him. But after a while, when he had gotten his reforms underway things started to go downhill. He, as everybody else, had totally overlooked how intertwined things were, so he got constant complaints about some part of society not working. That was when I went out in the public again.

The people cheered me up, after all everything had worked perfectly under my rule, so they quickly kicked out Tylfele and put me in power again. And I had my theories confirmed, people are goddamn stupid on the inside, something that made it easy for them to be manipulated into doing other people's bidding. At least the immigration conflict had been forgotten, so I could turn to more important matters, like keeping Raidercore safe from the Union, Alliance and Pact.

The True Tale of Tim Rayzor Part IV

We heard it from the Alliance first. The Earthlings had returned, and were fighting their way through their territory. Not that "returned" is the best word for it, since it was the first time they had shown themselves after the Utopia had left Earth, but somehow "returned" got to be the word people used. Not that it mattered, clearly some humans had survived on Earth, and were now very eager to take back what they thought of as theirs.

The Earthlings had invented the Time Accelerator too it seemed, since they kept coming and changing tactics all the time. Luckily they hadn't set their eyes on Raidercore yet, but they would, especially since the three big power blocs didn't seem to be able to put up a real defence. Instead they were bickering between themselves, blaming each new loss on each other. Apparently they had no real idea about how to fight a war, while the Earthlings still retained the knowledge of how to attack properly. No wonder really, we humans have a sad reputation of killing each other off, and that was something the builders of the Utopia didn't want to continue, so they had put no military knowledge into the ship's databanks.

That was when I decided to send the Raiders against the attackers. We used the same tactics as we always had done, and were highly succesful. We sent scouts to the Sol system, to check out what had become of old Earth, after all it had been exhausted of all its resources centuries ago, so where did they get the materials to build their warships? We should've known it, asteroid mining. Somehow they had managed to get to the asteroids after fighting for a for us unknown amount of time and built a starfleet. Somehow the Earthlings had gotten it into their heads that Earth still was humanity's "capital", and that because of that they had to conquer us who had left so long ago.

When the other major powers saw what the Raiders were able to, the constant bickering stopped, and the war effort became much more concentrated. Together we pushed back the Earthlings, telling them that they had no business out here. But as soon as peace was declared, things went back to what they had been like before the attack. Infighting between the major factions, and us poor Corians trying to remain independent, something which was bad, because I was sure the Earthlings would come back with a bigger fleet. I wished people could just be more rational, and not be as stubborn in their beliefs. A light went up for me. Why not change the human DNA code? It was not to create a race of "perfect humans", just more rational humans, more able to see the small interconnections between things. I knew people would protest against this, so it had to be a slow process where more and more "super humans" were being introduced into society, until there were just them left. Yes, that was what I had to do. Finally my dream about Utopia would come true.

It's been a while since the last installment, but this is not dead, not at all.

The True Tale of Tim Rayzor Part V

Four major powers and one minor, that's how the situation was. Raidercore was still overestimated, but now that the three colonial power blocs had started to study strategy and tactics chances were high we could not stand against them. In other words I had to be clever, I could not let my vision be destroyed by an untimely attack by any of the other powers. Luckily they were too focused on each other to take much notice of a tiny little planet on the outskirts of settled space.

The Earthlings were expanding, constantly colonizing new solar systems. That didn't surprise me at all, they probably knew that they would be easily vanquished if they still kept to only one system. This also probably meant they were staging for another attack, a much bigger one. The colonial powers figured this too, but again they could never agree on anything, something that fit me just well, as it allowed me to continue my secret research into the manipulation of the human genetic code to create a new race of humans, a race that would transcend all the bad things about Homo Sapiens and be as perfect as possible, truly able to think as a community, to see the big picture. The stage was set for Homo Transcendii. At least that's what I thought.

Progress was slow, and the scientists were constantly complaining about the ethical dilemma of it. After all they were researching on human embryos, some which were discarded, and some who were allowed to live, to test them. I didn't see how there could be any moral implications in it, after all they were doing it for the best of humanity. People had killed for lesser purposes since the beginning of time. Sadly I could only hope nobody went public with this, because it would mean the end of my political career, and the end of my dream. Damn short-sighted little know-it-alls, clearly years of education didn't help if ones mindset was flawed from the beginning.

Still people were happy on Raidercore, they pretty much enjoyed the highest standard of living in settled space. There was always someone who disagreed with me, but public consensus was that I did alright. I just had to keep that up and not do any major mistakes and things would stay the way I wanted them. That was the secret of my governance, not bread and circus, but my popularity. I didn't put too many restrictions on things, just those deemed reasonable, and nobody complained. That way I stayed in power not because I forced my position, but because people wanted me in it, which in turn meant no revolts. Why nobody had understood the full implications of that yet was beyond my comprehension, but then I didn't expect anything better.

Actually, I think what he's doing is more akin to eugenic gengineering to create a Nietzschean "superman" rather than simple cloning.

The True Tale of Tim Rayzor Part VI

After two centuries of ruling Raidercore I had learned one very important lesson. Don't be overt. Stay in the background and pull strings, just like the people I liberated the Corians from did. That was why I opened the Advisorate as a front to stay partially hidden behind. The Advisorate would have no real power, it would just propose new laws and comment on my decisions. That way I had a layer between myself and the people which I could use as a filter for the most serious complaints. After all I just wanted the best for the people, and the sad truth was that they didn't always know what was best for themselves. I could never say that publically though, it would ruin everything.

Of course my decision caused a lot of ruckus. Some smart people saw though me and understood at once what this was all about, but I knew that would go over by itself. When this new system had been in place for a while people would get used to it and not listen. I felt a bit bad for deluding the population like that, but it was in their own best interests.

It was also now I started thinking a bit about my policies. Wasn't I just deluding myself that what I did was in the people's interests and not just a justification for the things I did? I had just received complaints about details of my system, not of the whole of it, so I guessed it was alright, but I made a mental note to think a lot more before I made decisions in the future.

The Homo Transcendii project was still moving along nicely. It was horribly expensive though because I had to pay big wages for the scientists to keep quiet, and I had to make it look like they weren't working for me, but for some big corporation so that if someone decided that money wasn't everything after all and started blabbering the project couldn't be traced back to me, as that would ruin me as well. I could of course just dispose of them in other ways, but I didn't believe in making people "disappear". I didn't want my rule to be a rule of fear. I wanted people to praise me because they wanted to, not because they felt forced to. In the long run that would pay off the most, I was sure of that.

The True Tale of Tim Rayzor Part VII

The Earthlings had started acting up again. Now that they had secured themselves a few colonies they felt confident enough to take what they presumed theirs, and of course they went for the weakest link first, namely my little paradise planet of Raidercore. Of course they would, it would grant them a nice foothold in colonized space, and also a huge number of new recruits for their war effort, not to mention the resources to support the fleet needed to conquer the three other factions.

The Corian forces were completely overwhelmed, both by their military experience and their numbers. I saw no other option but to surrender in the hopes it would soften up the Earthlings at least a little bit. It didn't work. They wanted to punish us for our resistance, so they instated a brutal rule where you obeyed orders or were killed on the spot. Once I saw that they did not act as kindly as I expected them to I decided to go underground, just in time before they went to my offices and home to arrest me, where "arrest" meant "execute", like they did to the Advisors who didn't get away in time.

Still it was the Corian population that suffered the most. The Earthlings condemned their lifestyle as "decadent" and "wasteful" and made them all into slave workers. Many stood up against this, but they were met with a bullet or beam in their heads, usually at once. People were also conscripted to take part in the war against the other factions. Of course this was not very popular, and mass riots started, all of which were met with gunfire and ended in a blood bath. Still people weren't deterred, I felt a tear run down my cheek when I heard how brave my loyal citizens were, throwing themselves mindlessly against walls of blazing guns with total disregard of their lives. It proved that all my hard work had not been in vain, these people would give their lives for Raidercore. No, not for Raidercore, for the system, for the values Raidercore stood for.

After two years of hiding the Earthlings started their attack on the other factions. It did not turn out well at all. The Corian crews committed mutiny all the time, or sabotaged vital instruments, so the Earthlings were quickly pushed back. The Earthlings would not take the Corian route again, I was sure of that. So I returned from hiding and started recreating the Raidercore that had been. But I was stopped. The Alliance, which had taken temporary control over Raidercore, wouldn't just give their power away. "For your own protection" we were told. I was furious. Of course we needed protection, but not from the Earthlings anymore. We needed protection against imperialistic powers like the Alliance, and we didn't get that by being part of one.

So I decided to start an underground movement for an armed revolt against the Alliance to push them out. It would be a hard fight, but it would be worth it. The Alliance way of doing things was very far away from my way, not as far away as the Earthlings', but still too oppressive to last, which was what I was going to take advantage of again.
