Another British progressive rock band, formed in the late 1960s by a group of teenagers from Cambridge. They had many different line up changes in the early days before coming to their classic line up of vocalist/flutist Peter Gabriel, guitarist Steve Beckett (one of the first guitarists to use tapping and sweep-picking), bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford, pianist/keyboardist Tony Banks and drummer Phil Collins. During this era their sound is comparable to Yes and other symphonic progressive rock bands, with long, complex instrumentation and weird and nonsense lyrics, and influenced many later bands. The albums made during this time, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound, are considered some of the greatest progressive rock albums. When making their next album, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, a concept album, tension grew between Peter Gabriel, who and the remaining band members, who thought he was taking control over the band. In 1975, Peter Gabriel left the band.

After searching for replacement vocalists, the band settled on their drummer Phil Collins, who had a similar voice to Peter Gabriel. After making two albums, Steve Heckett left, leaving only three members in the band. The band then began to change their sound to pop rock (some people say it was Phil Collins' fault, but all the band members composed the songs), which made them popular during the eighties and early nineties, and made them one of the most successful bands ever. Their sound during this era was so different that many people think their a different band.

In the early nineties, Phil Collins left. The remaining band memebrs got Ray Wilson as vocalist, who's vocal style was different. They made one album before disbanding. Recently, Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford reformed the band (without Peter Gabriel, who declined to join, and Steve Heckett) for reunion tour, playing songs from both the band's eras.

What good songs do they have? The only Genesis song I know of is That's All, which I listen to a lot.
