Made you look, eh? ![]() Anyway, what is a good forum without some heated discussion about whether there is a higher being who is in charge? So let's go, I'll start off with saying that it's hard for me to believe in a superhuman being who made the world and will judge everybody some day, not to mention all his/her other traits. Can anyone convince me and my fellow non-believers that such an entity exists? |

I agree, I don't understand how people can believe that..though in most cases that's how they were raised, so that's what they were taught to believe in. When you're taught something from that early on you tend to believe it, not in all cases though, myself included. |

I can not convince you that God is real, you have to decide for yourself. Only you can change yourself. The only question I have is what do you think will happen after you die? |

I choose to believe there is something, because I fear death. I don't want to rot in the earth, I want to go somewhere nice. Where I can relax for eternity, meeting people, learning, having a good time. Many scientists have believed there is some sort of higher power. |

Do you have an actual religion or do you just believe in a higher power? |

Well, my family is Roman Catholic. And as a Catholic, you are very likely to go through something they call "Catholic Guilt". I guess that's what I have. I just lost my faith and want it back. |

I often have doubts but I sincerely hope there's a God. If there was though, I doubt that us mere mortals would be able to know for certain what all the rules and fine print to get into heaven would be. I mean, the Bible was written by mortal men after all. |

Why do you want it back? As an atheist I can't think of any reason by myself, I need to hear it from someone who sincerely believes. No offence though.
To you as well, why do you hope so? And you are right, if a superhuman being existed, can we really expect to understand it? To take Jesus for example, he was crucified because the people in charge didn't believe him and saw him as a threat instead of the Messiah he was. I don't mind using examples from the Bible, because even though it's a so-called "holy book" it's full of lessons like these, at least from my point of view. It's when people start talking about it as "the one and only truth" I get a sour taste in my mouth. |

Becuase often there are times when I think about myself and others and just want to believe that there's a being watching over us. Other times I believe there is without a doubt. I just feel that with a superior being that humanity has much more of a chance at survival than without. |

I want my faith back because it gives you a feeling of purpose. It pushes you to do good. Its not a pleasant feeling, in my opinion, to think everything in a sense is chaos. As for the Bible, the way I view it is this. Don't take it word for word. Its a good book with a nice message but people just take it as if its the law of the land. The Bible has some real odd passages when you come down to it. Somewhere in a Gospel Jesus performs an exorcism of pigs, he sends them to the ocean where they drawn. |

I personally believe there are multiple 'gods', but they're merely a higher from of being and were once like us mortal folk. I don't know who or more likely 'what' created everything, and i can safely say that we may never know the answer, the universe...no all existance is nothing more then a never ending loop. It is born, exists awhile and is then reduced to nothingness, only to be reborn out that nothingness. If this theory is true there's no way of knowing how many times it has happened since all records that may have been made would be erased........time truly is eteneral and even when existance is gone it flows onward........while our exstance is being reborn existance in other dimensions continues.......paralel universes......the answer the, key to everything i crave is so close...yet so far away............... |

It's simply a problem of possibilities, plus so much unexplainable stuff. Maybe the answer to the source of all origin is not for us to know........... |

@Bob and Ice: Many good points, but isn't it just a false feeling of security? You put your trust in something you don't know if exists or not? Also, you haven't answered my question, can you convice me that a higher being exists? Until now all I've gotten from you is reasons it feels good to believe in one, but nothing that actually tells me it exists. @General You also don't answer the question. All you say is that you can't prove the existance of a higher being, and this thread is about the opposite. |

Isn't that the point?, people have been trying to prove or disprove it for years and have gotten nowhere. I say trying to prove there is a god or isn't one is pointless, we should be focusing on our own lives and not something we stand little chance of comprehending at this point.............. |

True, but that leads us to another question? Why do we need to consolation of a higher being? Don't we trust ourselves enough? That's why I ask for proof such a being exists. |

I beleive humans are truly feeble creatures, we may think we're all that. But deep down each one of us is searching for our purpose in life and we all have fears and doubts and for some believing in a higher power gives them hope and comfort. They think that if they truly believe then all their problems can be shifted to 'god's' shoulders, but in the end only you can deal with your own problems. Faith provides peace of mind, an escape from a rapidly corrupting world. But it is a choice, we have free will we alone decide what we do or do not believe in. To answer you last question TP, i think some of us choose to believe because we're scared and if we screw up or make a mistake it seems kinda nice to think that all can be forgiven. Others simply believe because it was the way they were raised, often times they end up rebelling later in life. |

I'd rather live in ignorance. Its much easier on the mind. I'm not sure if any one can convince you their is a higher deity. I'll try though, how about those platypuses? Either God had just finished making marijuana or evolution was trying to pull one on us! Sorry for offending anyone if I did. |
