To sum it all up to the best of my ability without giving anything away other than what you know right in the first/second chapter or even before you open the book... Due to the corrupt Greater Republic of East Asia, or the government, there is such a thing as what they call 'the Program'. In this program, one third year junior high class in Japan is randomly selected to be placed in a sort of sick game. They are put on an island and forced to kill each other until there is only one left. They are given no warning. There can only be one survivor. If they refuse to kill, they will all die. I can't say more than that without giving more away. Rules apply to it, but it's basically a story about one of the classes that was chosen for this Program. You are given a look from different students' perspectives at times, but it centers around one character, Shuya Nanahara. You read on as they are forced into playing this 'twisted version of musical chairs'. Some try to plan to escape. Some kill ruthlessly. Some run and hide out of the terrifying fact that the classmates they were just joking around with and talking to yesterday are out to kill them. Some relationships are broken, some are forged. It's one of the best books I've ever read. If you want to know more, Wikipedia has a good article on it. It does have a bit of gore, and some language, but even if you don't like those things it's definitely worth a read. In the end...I guess the theme is human nature, and struggle for survival and power and trust. |

...An enemy that is pure evil? Right and wrong are not what separate us and our enemies. It's our different standpoints, our perspectives that separate us. Both sides blame one another. There's no good or bad side. Just 2 sides holding different views. ~Squall Leonhart | |

I watched it after I read the book...As a movie, it was okay, but as a book-to-movie, it was horrid. They left a lot of important things out, they changed around almost everything, the character development sucked...The book is much better. |

I've seen it in the Sci-Fi section of a few bookstores. I thought it was an interesting concept, but what sections I read did seem a little too graphic for my tastes... |
