Yup, I'm back for more discussion, this time about capital punishment. For or against, and why?

I'm for it if it's been proven that they can never lead a normal life without going back to commiting the violent crimes that landed them in jail to begin with. Serial killers and murderers who've said that they couldn't stop themselves from killing again even if they tried or that they'd want to kill again, should be executed or at the very least be sentenced to life in prison with no parole. If they let people like that back out onto the street, then they may as well go out and start killing people left and right. It's the justice system's duty to protect the people from these monsters, to do any less would be utter failure on their part and in the past and even now the justice system fails......why?, because like the government the justice system too has been corrupted by greed.

To add to General's point, there should be absolutely no doubt that the person is guilty. If there's even one discrepency in the evidence then execution should be out of the question. I do think though, that it would probably be better and more humane to just keep them locked up without parole.

I'm not against it, but I think life in prison is a worse punishment than death. So maybe they should use death less and use life in jail more. But then of course, you get the rising costs of taking care of so many people (or at least just keeping them alive), so I guess it's fine how it is.

The government uses more cash taking care of prisoners than on taking care of schools. Thats one reason I'd rather not have life in prison. Plus the fear of death might scare some people. I only support death penalty when the evidence is clear.

To try, convict and execute innocent people.........reminds me of what's going on in one of my soaps.........

Think of it this way: If the government endorses killing people when it thinks it's justified, what example would that set for the rest of the population? Few people ever do anything without thinking it's justified.

I tend to agree, death actually saves you from languishing in prison for decades, so I think that just killing murderers is giving them an easy way out.

As for the funding question, raise funding for schools, a better educated workforce is less prone to become criminals, which means less load on the prison budget. This is long term thinking though, something we humans have proven again and again that we aren't capable of.

And some statistics: In the USA many states have the death penalty. No states in Western and Central Europe have it. Still, even though there are less people living in the USA there are several times as many homicides as in all of Western and Central Europe put together. I don't know if there's a connection, but as I wrote earlier in this post where the government goes the people follow.
