According to George Lucas, a better term would be "space fantasy". Star Wars isn't based on science and Lucas purposely avoided trying to explain how anything works in the original film so the person watching it would just assume it works.

The space setting, with all the ships, robots, aliens and weapons, is probably the reason why most people think of Star Wars as science fiction.

The proper term for the genre would be space opera. Star Wars was inspired by matinée serials (sort of an early version of TV series) of the 1930s that George Lucas used to watch, like Flash Gordon. Indiana Jones came about in a similar way, but it's more faithful to what they were (like doing everything really cheaply, lots of stunts and the hero never loses his hat). Another inspiration behind Star Wars was the common themes that occur throughout different mythologies, and a Japanese film called The Hidden Fortress.

I agree to this statement. "Science fiction fantasy" isn't a genre. I could write a long essay on SF and all its subgenres, but I'll leave it unless you want me to.
