Although this is a progressive rock project, the themes of the albums are science fiction.

Ayreon is mostly just one man, Arjen Anthony Lucassen, who (mostly) composes all the music, comes up with the concept for an album, plays most of the guitars and keyboards, sometimes sings, and then mixes and produces it. There are many guest vocalists to sing the different parts and many other instrumentalists to play guitar or synthesizer solos or an unusual instrument, and a almost always the same drummer,

The first album, "The Final Experiment", is about a fifth century blind minstrel named Ayreon (originally Aries, but changed because of the English pronunciationis different than Dutch), and recieves a vision from the future. The vision comes from a device that's invented by scientists in 2084, who want to send a warning back in time of a war that will destroy the Earth. Ayreon spreads the messages through fifth century England, eventually ending up in the court of King Arthur. Merlin then banishes Ayreon, but realises his mistake, and prophesises that another minstrel in the 20th centuty will recieve the message.

The next album, "Actual Fantasy", isn't a rock opera, the songs are only related because they deal with fantasy (Actual Fantasy being the opposite of Virtual Reality).

The third album, "Into the Electric Castle: A Space Opera", involves eight stereotypical characters from history (A Scottish Highlander, a Native American Indian, a Knight, a Roman, an Egyptian, a Barbarian, a Hippie and a Futureman) who are brought to a strange realm by an unknown being, and have to travel to the Electric Castle and face the challenges there. If any of them fail, they die. At the end, the being reveals himself to be called Forever of the Srars, an immortal alien who's race has forgotten emotions, so they create an experiment on Earth, first by kinning off the dinosaurs and then creating humans so they can experience emotions. At the end, the survivors are sent back to their own time.

The fourth and fifth albums, "The Dream Sequencer" and "Flight of the Migrator" (re-released as the double album "The Universal Migrator"), deal with the last human who lives on Mars and has never lived on Earth. He uses a device called the Dream Sequencer to experience his past lives, and discovered he is a reincarnation of the first human. He then goes further back in time to before the big band and discovers the first soul, the Migrator, who travels the universe to form life. At the end, the human has spent too much time using the Dream Sequencer, and dies, then is told by the Migrator that he is the next migrator.

The sixth album, "The Human Equation", deals with a man in a coma, who has to confront his emotions to discover why he is in a coma and how his life went wrong. Right at the end it's discovered to be another experiment by Forever.

A seventh album, "01011001", comes out later this month. From the trailer, it seems to fill in the gaps and connect the previous albums (except Actual Fantasy).
