60 Minutes is an American television news magazine, which was created in 1968. The program was created by Don Hewitt who set it apart by using a unique style of reporter-centered investigation. In 2002, 60 Minutes was ranked No. 6 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time.

60 Minutes consists of three long-form news stories, without superimposed graphics. There is a commercial break between two stories. The stories are introduced from a set with a backdrop resembling pages from a magazine story on the same topic. The show undertakes its own investigations and follows up on investigations instigated by national newspapers and other sources.

Season 43, Episode 1
Segment 1: Story -- The Southern Heritage Act. This highly controversial legislation orders the Confederate flag to be flown over the United States Capital and repeals electoral provisions of the Civil Rights Act. Senate Judiciary Chairman Andrew McCoy (R-LA) and House Minority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) are interviewed as part of this segment.
Segment 2: Story -- President's Budget Proposal. The President proposed a budget with a two trillion dollar deficit, thanks in part to the depression, but also thanks in part to attached healthcare provisions. Segment 3: Point Counter-Point -- Automotive Bailout. Senate Minority Leader Matthew Terrus (D-MI) and Senate Economic Committee Chairman Stephen Kudlow (R-AZ) discuss and debate the automotive assistance act.

Season 43, Episode 2
Segment 1: Story -- Bartlett Fiasco. Senate Majority Leader CJ Bartlett (R-OK) resigned today after an embarrassing town hall meeting, during which angry constituents grilled him about his initial decision to support for the Southern Heritage Act, and his later decision to oppose the Southern Heritage Act. Bartlett himself appears on the program as part of this segment.
Segment 2: Story -- Gibbons Law. Governor Jim Gibbons made national headlines this year when he issued an executive order authorizing and directing police officers to question any individual that appears to be an illegal immigrant. Governor Jim Gibbons and Janet Murguia, President of the National Council of La Raza, are interviewed as part of this segment.
Segment 3: Story -- Afghanistan. The Senate recently considered establishing a timeline for withdrawal from Afghanistan. This segment examines the present status of the war. Senate Armed Forces Committee Chairman Georgy Zhukov (R-NH) and Vice President John Starnes are interviewed as part of this segment.

Season 43, Episode 3
Story 1: Senator Andrew McCoy (R-LA) attempted negotiations with the North Korean delegation to the United Nations this week. McCoy's efforts failed, as the North Koreans recorded the meeting then released a false version of the recording, which wrongly depicted McCoy attempting to defect. The Senate was expected today to consider a resolution to investigate McCoy's actions with particular attention to the Logan Act, a nineteenth century statute that forbid unauthorized negotiations with foreign governments. 60 Minutes provided an overview of the story, provided some background information on the Logan Act, interviewed the Senator McCoy, and interviewed the United States Ambassador to South Korea as part of this segment.
Story 2: The Chilean government finally recused thirty-three miners that were trapped underground for a record two months after a severe mining accident. 60 Minutes provided an overview of the disaster and rescue operations, interviewed the Chilean Ambassador to the United States, and interviewed experts on mines.
Segment 3: A massive earthquake struck Tehran, Iran this week, killing approximately ten thousand people. 60 Minutes provided extensive coverage of the earthquake and provided some information regarding American-Iranian relations.

Segment 1: Story -- Budget. This segment focuses on the progress of the President's budget through Congress. A White House spokesperson and a Republican Congressman are interviewed as part of this segment.
Segment 2:. Federal Reserve Chairman Appointment. This segment focuses on the reappointment of Ben Bernanke as Chairman of the Federal Reserve. Chairman Bernanke and Senate Economic Affairs Committee Chairman Stephen Kudlow (R-AZ) are interviewed as part of this segment.
Segment 3: Interview -- President Derek Baldacci. 60 Minutes interviews Baldacci regarding the economy, his Presidency to date, and the new Russo-American nuclear missile treaty.

Story 2: The Senate Judiciary Committee rejected the President's Education Budget proposal this week after Senator Andrew McCoy (R-LA) amended it to quadruple government assistance to college students and to prohibit foreign citizens from receiving government-financed aid. The committee rejected the budget in a non-partisan vote. 60 Minutes covered the matter in detail, interviewing William Schneider as part of the segment.
Story 3: 61 passengers and 7 crew members died this week when Aero Caribbean Flight 883 crashed in Cuba. 60 Minutes covered the tragic accident in detail.

Story 1: Senate Republicans led by Senator Andrew McCoy (R-LA) rejected a motion to reconsider the federal education budget, setting the state for a shutdown of the Department of Education. Senate Minority Leader Matthew Terrus (D-MI) responded by moving to add the Education Budget to the end of the Defense Budget, which received both bipartisan support and opposition. 60 Minutes interviewed McCoy and Terrus as part of its coverage of this series of events.

Story 3: The Burmese government released renowned opposition activist Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest this week. 60 Minutes used the event to provide general coverage of the political situation in Myanmar. To this end, 60 Minutes interviewed Suu Kyi, and the Burmese Ambassador to the United States.
