Election Night Coverage
The United States Broadcasting Company provided extended coverage of the 2010 mid-term elections as part of its commitment to informational and educational content. The network expanded NewsMorning to three hours to provide a backdrop to the election, expanded NewsNight to two hours to rehash that backdrop, and then provided special reports from 8PM to 1AM as the polls closed.

Andrea Mitchell hosted the evening portion of the coverage, from 6PM to 1AM, with the help of the entire USBC News team. Mitchell focused on key congressional, senatorial, and gubernatorial races, though she also threw to information packages about the main issues of the election. Mitchell notably interviewed President Jacob Olliver during the special.

Throughout the broadcast, Mitchell remained loyal to the mission of USBC News, namely to ensure that voters have the information necessary to make informed decisions between candidates. To this end, she:
1. Provided non-biased reports, noting that objectiveness is not synonymous with fairness or balance;
2. Treated guests and viewers with the great respect possible, assuming that every guest and every viewer is both smart and caring;
3. Selected guests, and focused reports, in such a manner as to highlight the "best form of the argument," even if that is neither the most popular nor the most interesting form of the argument;
4. Recognized that personal lives should remain private, except when a person's personal actions legitimately relate to that person's work;
5. Used anonymous sources only when absolutely necessary to ensure the provision of essential information but never allowed a person to attack another anonymously;
6. Carefully separated opinion and analysis from straight reporting, labeling each clearly, and always ensuring that the viewers are aware of opposing opinions and analyses;
7. Presented every story with the greatest care, as if the story were about herself; and
8. Never allowed concerns regarding ratings to influence production, editing, directing, or reporting.

Election Special Report
Andrea Mitchell hosted a special, one-hour USBC NewsNight report on the outcome of the mid-term 2010 elections on the evening following the elections. Mitchell sought to comply with the journalistic requirements of USBC News throughout the broadcast (see the 8 point list above).

Mitchell spent the first twenty minutes of the episode talking about federal elections. She reported which party won each House of Congress, discussed the likely results of said victories, and speculated on likely policy initiatives next year. She briefly covered still undecided federal elections, as well. She threw to a commercial break at the end of this segment.

Mitchell spent the next thirty minutes of the episode talking about state elections. She sought to provide voters with an overview of the electoral outcome in each state of the union, focusing more on states with split legislatures, or where the government was divided. To the extent possible, Mitchell made predictions regarding major legislative battles in each state. She then threw to commercial.

Mitchell spent the final ten minutes of the program discussing gerrymandering. Defining gerrymandering as the redrawing of congressional and legislative boundaries to favor an incumbent or party, Mitchell rather blatantly rallied against the practice. She talked about those states where gerrymandering was prohibited and also about those states where it was most likely to occur. Mitchell briefly referenced the Southern Heritage Act, which would've repealed the federal prohibition on racially discriminatory gerrymandering.

Show/Episode -- USBC NewsNight, S1, Special 1

To be run the week before election night, this advertisement exhorts viewers to tune in for the best election coverage, provided by Andrea Mitchell and the USBC News Team. The commercial notes that only one network puts information over ratings, USBC, and the only network with an exclusive election-related interview with President Jacob Olliver.

2010 in Review
Andrea Mitchell hosted a special, one-hour USBC NewsNight report on New Year's Even, providing an overview of the greatest events of 2010. Mitchell sought to comply with the journalistic requirements of USBC News throughout the broadcast (see the 8 point list above).

Mitchell spent the first half of the episode covering the Depression, the main news event of the year. She discussed the double-digit unemployment rate, the formal declaration of a Depression, and the bankruptcy declarations of dozens of corporations during the year. Mitchell talked about the causes of the recession, as well as the numerous failed attempts to address it, notably the President's stimulus plan.

Mitchell spent ten minutes discussing the War in Afghanistan, where levels of violence rose in 2010, despite the deployment of further troops there in 2009. She discussed the intricate relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the sympathy felt by many Pakistanis for the Taliban, and the difference between the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Mitchell ended the segment by discussing the political fight over the war.

Mitchell spent ten minutes covering the budget, which Congress failed to pass on time this year, though it did prevent a shutdown by passing a continuing resolution. Mitchell detailed the major debates over the budget, ranging from the defunding of NASA to the desire to prohibit international students from receiving financial aid from the federal government.

Mitchell spent the last ten minutes covering smaller news stories, such as Senator Andrew McCoy's (R-LA) fiasco with the North Koreans, and the Gibbons law.
