I picture Lindrom as devoted and studious, though perhaps lacking a strong assertive personality due to his years of study, leading to his low Charisma. He's friendly enough, but bad at expressing himself, a role-playing challenge for me, since I think I tend to take the lead as a player. I'll be putting ranks into Diplomacy as he advances and has more interaction with the world than through books and scrolls.

At 6th I plan to enter into the Harper Priest prestige class and take all five levels it offers. Then I plan on returning to the path of the archivist for the rest of the game.

The temple of Ogma in Deepingdale is described here: Leaves of Learning

What you know

While the library claims they "dont have a word about magic" this not entirely true. Even antidotally there are tons of references to magical events and effects. As more and more written tales of the Time of Troubles surface, a wealth of information is being cataloged here. Only a very select few are aware of the libraries “Appendix” and since it exists on a demiplane, there is no conflict in asserting that no magical tombs exist within the temple.

The Appendix is accessed through an extremely well hidden portal within the libraries labyrinth. The portal leads to a small material demiplane where Danali houses his inner sanctum, which includes a special shrine to Ohgma and a hidden library and study. Here he stores and archive of secret knowledge, specific to a small and relatively unknown sect of the church who train in the ways of the archivist.

Learned Father Higher Atlar Hasicor Danali is the tall, grave high priest of Oghma who runs the Leaves of Learning temple in Highmoon. His severe, balding head and flapping black Robes of Many Sigils are seen only seldom in the streets, because he spends most of his time deep in the temple’s innermost chambers working on his dream: the Index.

No one would ever accuse Danali of being dotty or forgetful, but his early clerical life assisting a librarian whose wits were failing drove home to him just how much finding things in any library rode on the possibly addled wits and all-too-mortal heart of whoever shelved and read its contents. If precise and detailed knowledge of where to find specific things was ever to outlive people, an ever-growing written record of where to find things must be compiled. In response to this concern, Danali has been creating his Index to the contents of the library of the temple for some 40 years. (He is 56) Oghma so approved of this quiet back-room work that the Binder appeared in visions to high members of the church of Oghma’s hierarchy repeatedly to order the priests to elevate Danali over the years and ultimately to select him as the leader of the Leaves of Learning. There is no question of any trickery or misinterpretation about these visions, and news of them spread through the priesthood of Oghma throughout Faerun like wildfire and resulted in many delegations from other temples (including much older and larger ones) to see Danali’s work.

-----

What you know

Essentially your mentor, it is less known that Danali has received numerous visions form the Binder himself. These visions lead to the creation of the Appendix, and the eventual taking on of a young apprentice.

Two there should be; no more, no less. One to embody power, the other to crave it.

So do you have any Forgotten Realms novels that you recommend reading to get a good sense of life in the Dales? Or any of the sourcebooks? I suppose I could just wander in and discover things for myself, too, if you'd rather.

I sent you a good source book. As far as novels, I haven't read any of them. Still I do know a good number of them deal with the "eastern heartlands" (dalelands, corymr, sembia) The Azure Bonds/Pool of Radiance may be good, and there is a trilogy, one of which is called Shadowdale, which is all about the time of troubles. Ask phill what he knows next time you see him. Im not sure how well the game translates to the novels...

The novel Shadowdale is part of the Avatar trilogy, the other two books being Tantras and Waterdeep. Only parts of the first two books take place in the Dalelands but the story moves all over the areas of the realms we will probably be adventuring in. I have all three if anyone wants to read them.

Other than that I don't think there are any definitive novels about the Dalelands like there are for some other regions of the realms. You can try The Azure Bonds and Pool of Radiance although I haven't read them so I don't know how relevant they'd be. There are also a number of books that take place in the elven areas of the Dalelands but they tend to deal with ancient elven history so I don't know how useful that would be. Some of the later novels in the Elminster series also take place partly in the Dalelands. Lastly you could try The Lost Library of Cormanthyr which could hold some special interest for an archivist.

Yeah Phil, I'd like to check out the Avatar trilogy if that's cool. I have all the Eberron novels if you'd like to swap. Do you also own The Lost Library of Cormanthyr? I'd like to peep that too. I read fast.

I'll bring the Avatar trilogy on Thursday but I don't own The Lost Library of Cormanthyr. I would be interested in reading some Eberron novels although I currently have quite a backlog of books to read. Is there any novel you recommend in particular?

The FR sourcebook Champions of Valor introduced Regional Backgrounds which are like Character Regions but replace some regional options. I thought you might be interested in this one if you want your character to start out with some background with the Harpers.

Harper Protégé

The Harpers have agents all over Faerûn, and whether one parent or both is a Harper, some of that group’s attitude is bound to rub off on a child. Some of these protégés eventually join the Harpers, but many of them become adventurers with material interests in mind or just a wanderlust born of the incredible bedtime stories
their mother or father told them in their younger years. Sometimes a Harper goes deep undercover in enemy territory, raising a family there to preserve their cover identity, and when the child learns their parent isn’t who they say they are it can be quite a shock.

Region: Any.

Automatic Languages: As region.

Bonus Languages: As region.

Favored Deities: As region, plus Deneir, Eldath, Lliira, Mielikki, Milil, Mystra, Oghma, Selûne, Tymora, and the elven pantheon.

Regional Feats: Arcane Schooling, Artist, Luck of Heroes, Street Smart.

Bonus Equipment: (A) chain shirt, masterwork musical instrument, and antitoxin; or (B) masterwork short sword; or © Harper token (see page 66).

The Harper token listed in bonus equipment is described here:

HARPER TOKEN
The Harpers have many friends and allies, and sometimes they reward people who have done them a service. They also like to mark their friends and loved ones so that other Harpers know to look out for them. A Harper token is a minor magic item that gives the bearer a small benefi t and lets the Harpers identify him. Such items are often carried by the adventuring sons and daughters of Harpers.

Description: This small brooch is made of silver. Its head is a flat disk embossed with a handharp. Some Harper tokens are made of gold or other materials, have different embossed symbols such as a musical note or a tree, and come in other shapes such
as belt buckles, bracelets, or rings. When its power is used, a Harper token glows slightly, becomes warm, buzzes softly, or gives some other small signal that it is functioning. This signal is never contrary to the purpose of the item; for example, a token that gives a bonus on Hide checks would never glow, and one that helps Move Silently checks would not make noise.

Activation: A Harper token requires a command word to activate it once it is worn, but once activated it continues to function as long as it is worn; removing it ends its benefit until it is donned and the command word spoken once again. The command words are phrases made up of words that would never be spoken together, such as “blessed Zhentarim,” “friendly phaerimm,” or “drunken golem.” Harper tokens do not work for evil creatures

Hmm... that seems to work fairly well for my character build, except that I would like to take Militia for my bonus feat, and that isn't one of the options available. Ah well.

Toast, tell me more about your focus on archery with Mr. Hawkins. I like the idea of having some ranged presence in the group. Tamara's elf will, of course, be proficient with the bow, and her high DEX will help as well. Saubon, with 15 DEX and full base attack would be decent as well, but since it looks like I am the front rank, I will probably be running at the enemy with sword drawn. A good volley, even one round of shots, can be very advantageous, especially at lower levels. Especially if you are rocking the hunter's mercy!!!

Bob will also have ranged power as an arcane caster. Phil will probably also be running at the enemy. Don't know what Kevin will choose. Rogue? Dragon Shaman? Duskblade? Candlecaster? Beloved of Valarian? Ha, I kid, I kid. I'm sure what he comes up with will have that special something we have come to rely on from Kevin.
