Sebastian starts out as a rogue but he will mostly progress as a fighter with additional rogue levels every fifth level after first (6th, 11th, etc.). As a first level rogue he starts out with a lot of skill points but as he progresses as a fighter he will only have a limited number of points to advance with. Sebastian plans to focus on his Balance, Bluff, Sense Motive, and Tumble skills keeping them maxed out through his career. Some feats I plan on giving Sebastian over the couple levels are Weapon Finesse, Parry, and Improved Disarm. Other feats I’m considering as he gains levels are Combat Reflexes, Guarded Defense, Improved Two-Weapon Fighting, Improved Critical, and Telling Blow.

I’ll add some character details shortly.

I like. A solid, well-rounded character. I like that you have many different skills, and that with no low attribute scores you will be good in all of them. Disarm i think will end up being very useful, if you decide to go that way. And it fits very well with your character. So you are from Sembia? Do I remember you saying that the other night? I see chaotic good, but what kind of CG are you thinking of? Are you the type of swashbuckler that has his own code, or are you more of live in the moment kind of duelist? Your character and mine will probably get along well. Though I will be more likely to observe the letter of the law, especially when it is inconvenient. It will be good to have both facets of law and chaos in the party, so we can put whichever one works in the speakers role. I'm sure there will be times when a solemn oath-observing soldier will be better at negotiating, and there will be times when a man with more style and flair and adaptability will be required. And don't worry about feat similarities between characters. You, Tamara, and I will all have two weapon fighting. I see this as an advantage in firepower for our party. Will will put out more attacks per person than the enemy. Perhaps we should all get scabbards of keen edges? a cheaper way to get increased crit range, and with our higher amount of attacks, it should be worth it. We could all have one (or two!). It could be a defining elemant of our party. And Sebastian is nothing like Alice, anymore than Saubon is like Alice.

So, tell us more about the flavor of Sebastian. Give us some indication of what his temperment is like, how he grew up, what he is likely to do in different situations.

I like the swashbuckler type character. Glad you didn't go with the base class, though. What will he look like? Clothes? A swashbuckler has to have style...

Don't forget to think about those skill tricks from Complete Scoundrel. One or two of those might be pretty useful for your build. You can't take them until 4th (?) level at the earliest I think, but some are pretty cool, once-per-encounter kinda things.

I remember there's a stair fighting one, and another where you dash through their legs and catch them unawares. You could build a whole fighting style around them, all Errol Flynn-like.

I hear what you are saying about having a unique thing about your character. Maybe some of those skill tricks? I don't know. Is there a prestige class that would work for you? Thief-Acrobat? Tempest? Blade Dancer from Oriental was pretty cool. I don't want you to feel your character is flat because we have overlap in feats. I'm sure we can work something out. I could even be persuaded to go all Anointed Knight and skip the Kensai two wepon thing.

You might also consider the Noble Adventure, though your "nobleness" would be aquired through bluff...

I have no problem with both of you taking the PC, so don't hesitate to use it if you like it. It seems like ti goes along with your PC pretty well too. If you like, we could adapt it more specific to Sembia.

Does the Main Gauche give you a bonus on disarm? I thought I remembered it doing that. Another option you might consider is taking oversized two weapon fighting, and going with two rapiers. It was actually a Spanish style, if I remember correctly form my fencing days. Toast, am I off here? That way, since you have mostly levels of fighter, weapon focus and specialization will apply to both!!! You also might look into two weapon defense. I think the two rapiers would be totally cool. I'l taking feats to get a maneuver from the Book of the Nine Swords, about 12th level, called Bonecrusher. does some extra damage on an attack, and fucks their insides up so that they are more susceptable to critical hits. Until they are healed full, crits against them get +10 to confirm!!! Think if you are rockin two rapiers...

Nick's quaint Palinesque words of wisdom have reinvigorated my interest so please ignore anything I might have said about switching characters.

The Main Gauche gives a +2 bonus to disarm and parry attempts but it is still a dagger so I can use it with the Rapier & Dagger Style combat. Using two rapiers would require another feat which I already can't seem to find enough of but the advantages might well be worth it. Stylistically I still like the rapier & main gauche look.

I hadn't really thought of a prestige class since I discounted the Dualist. Where is the Noble Adventurer from and what does it do? I have been looking for some alternate class abilities, specifically something to replace trap sense since I believe Bob has run that joke dry.

A while ago I asked Nick about the possibility of designing a feat. I got the idea from the following feat from the Complete Scoundrel. I was hoping I could design something similar since I'm a Swashbuckler in spirit if not by class.

Daring Outlaw
You combine grace and stealth to deadly effect.

Prerequisite: Grace +1, sneak attack +2d6.

Benefit: Your rogue and swashbuckler levels stack for the purpose of determining your competence bonus on Reflex saves from the grace class feature and the swashbuckler’s dodge bonus to AC. For example, a 7th-level rogue/4th-level swashbuckler has grace +2 and gains a +2 dodge bonus to AC, as if she were an 11th-level swashbuckler. Your rogue and swashbuckler levels also stack for the purpose of determining your sneak attack bonus damage. For example, a 7th-level rogue/4th-level swashbuckler would deal an extra 6d6 points of damage with her sneak attack, as if she were an 11th-level rogue.

I know I've been lagging on my character background and I'll post that all in great detail soon. I have it all figured out in my head I just didn't want to commit to anything until I had my character figured out mechanically. It doesn't make sense but I have my own process. Unfortunately there aren't any source books on Sembia but I just started reading the first novel in the Sembia series which should give me a good feel for the area. I've often seen it described as similar to Renaissance Italy which is why I figured it would be perfect for Sebastian.

There is an alternat rogue class feature that replaces sneak attack with bonus feats, i think. that's the only rogue altenate that I know of. There is also a fighter alternate that gives you sneak attack instead of feats.

as far as designing a feat, if you came up with one that made your (X) levels stack with rogue to determine sneak attack, it seems only half powered when compared to Deadly outlaw, since that feat boosts class abilities from two classes. maybe rogue and fighter levels stack for determining access to specialization as well? Or the levels stack for determining bonus feats from fighter?

And as long as you're at it, come up with an alternate class ability for trap sense. +1/+2/+3 to spot and listen? keeps the idea of keen senses. +(x) to tumble and balance? and I hear what you're saying about the rapier/ main gauche. and you are looking at the weapon style feat in Complete Warrior for the sword and dagger? Is that the disarming one?

Im glad you came to this conclusion. I think I understand your desire to play PCs that stand out. I belive that your character will be unique and stand out its own way. Combat style is only one aspect of the game. The fact that several of the PCs will fight with two weapons and have a wide crit range I think will make for a fun party.

There is no real tank as Adam has pointed out, so the front lines will be him, Alice, and your fighter/thief. I think while a mage would have added to power in the late game - it would have made things much harder for the party out of the gates. Im glad your running with your OG build. All the flashing blades should make for some exciting combat and fun party dynamics.

I looked over the Noble Adventurer prestige class for that Dragon article and I think I'm going to go for it. I really like the idea of a character who bluffs and buys his way into high society, kind of like the Count of Monte Cristo. The one entry requirement that might be tricky is “must have equipment and treasure with a value greater than the starting equipment for a PC of their level.” I might have to put my rogue levels to good use. I'm also thinking of going into the Battle Trickster from the Complete Scoundrel. Both prestige classes are pretty slight only adding up to seven levels total.
