In 1160, The Blue Sheilds announced their retirement. Widely known as extremely successful adventurers, they were often referred to as "The Chosen of Tymora", though there is no evidence that they had any affiliation to the church other than patrons. Using Math Mannamans and Respins wast knowledge of history and obscure legends, they led a campaign over several decades in which they uncovered many forgotten ruins of Fearun.

They were the first to explore Deep Shanatar in centuries. They recovered the famous Star Gem of Karnasus from Hlondeth. They found and defeated the dreaded Jergowaun the Grey and claimed his huge hoard. The list goes on.

In retirement they were extremely generous to the underprivileged and indeed it is argued that their philanthropy lead to a fifty year boost of economy leading to many of the Daleland expansions. It was also rumored that they left a enormous hoard for would be adventures clever enough to find it. Clues are thought to be hidden all over Fearun. The Blue Sheilds themselves faded into obscurity, and while for several years folk where known to "seek the shields" - nothing was ever found.

Tymora's Blessing

Every so often, a person may find themselves in the right place at the right time. When you found your selves bloodied and beaten by the goblin hoards of The Stormhorns, the party retreated back to Arabel. Along the way a chance meteor shower occurred, which by some form of magic pointed in the direction of a door hidden in a group of mossy boulders. Inside a scroll, and the voice: "Seek the Blue Shields..."

The scroll depicted four shields, each face with a different picture. Runes, apparently some code stood be fore each shield, and more runes were found within the pictures on the shields themselves.

With deciphering and research, you have learned this much so far:

Math

This Shield belonged to Math Mannaman. Math was an intellectual mage and focused much of his research into alchemy and the planes. He was particularly interested in how natural compounds and elements interacted with others from different planes. When with the Sheilds, he apparently also demonstrated a wealth of knowledge of ancient history which they used extensively in their campaign. While little is written on his personality, it was noted that he wasn't terribly fond of the gold lust of adventuring, but he needed substantial capitol for some thing and was talked into the Blue Shields by Respin.

Under his name is a shield bearing strange symbols. There are two distinct pasterns coding separate clues. The first, running down the center of the shield, was simply translated as: "54 Upper Terrace, Ravens Bluff"

The other inscriptions appear to be a complex recipe for some potion or tincture. It is still unclear what the solution of this is. It could form a word or words, or it could imply to literally brew the recipe - yet there is no indication of what to do with it then. Either way, there are some vary advanced procedures that would require tremendous skill to solve the problem.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the address in Raven's Bluff lives Pharadain a scattered, reclusive apothecary. He is known to create various concoctions for a select clientele in the City. While resistant at first, he eventually lets the party enter, but does not offer any information. He stays strangely vague, and largely ignores the group. Once the concoction begins brewing however, he takes more interest and watches as Truesilver works. Once finally complete, he swiftly grabs the flask and takes a quick swig before passing it on.... "Now this ought to be interesting..." Looks like about a swallow for everyone.

Thorick

Thorik "Pick" Blackrock was a classic dwarf in every sense. He got his name for his favored weapon, a pick axe. He loved the mountains and spent most of his waking life traversing around, over and under them. When Respin offered him a chance to explore Deep Shanatar, he could not refuse. Following his time with the Shields, he set out to explore mountains in faraway realms, he was never seen again.

Dwarven Runes line the shield framing the view of a majestic mountain range. A river meanders down from the heart of the range. The runes translate to:

In old Belgrom there lies a stair:
Old, Forgotten, lost from Shanatar;
Where the Duerif Anion devours the rock;
From the heart of Aniona Elnor"

You know that Belgrom is called the Troll mountains by humans. They also refer to the Duerif Anion as the river Fireflow. Aniona Elnor is a large peak in the range, and presumably the headwaters of the river Fireflow.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thorik's sheild was hidden in a long abandoned water works of old Shanatar. This isolated outpost currently is known to known other than the resting dwarven engineers who are long dead.

The Blue Shield of Thorik

+2 Medium Steel Shield

Additionally, once the wielder has carried the shield for a week, they become attuned to it, gaining the following benefits:

Once per day as a free action the wielder gains a 'Stone Skin' effect giving their skin the likeness of stone and granting DR5/adamantine. This effect lasts for 10 minutes. The wielder must be standing on natural stone or earth for this ability to activate.

Once per day the wielder may make a smite attack with a +10 circumstance bonus to attack and damage. The target must be standing on stone or natural earth for this effect to work.

Respin

Respin was a young elf who had an affinity for travel. He found no offense to humans, and unlike most of his brethren of the time, spent most his life away from the ancestral forests and instead roamed the realms. He was fond of tales and story, and spent many of his youth full years learning of legends and tales of the old world. Overtime he handcrafted the Blue Shields to see how many of the legends where true.

This shield depicts a starry night with a comet passing by. The constellations are strange, and not confirmed by current star charts. A "X" is shown at the bottom of the shield, apparently marking a place.

Jalor

Jalor was a sailor by birth and ruffian by youth, and most his life too. He loved fighting and battle, and was the most 'mercenary' like of the Shields. He had adventured with Respin prior to the Shields and apparently they won each others respect and loyalty.

Below his name is the depiction of a lighthouse on a rocky coast. In the beam of light are strange markings. These markings appear to be of the same type as the inscription of the names on the scroll. If it is the same code, they reveal two separate numbers.

The lighthouse is the famous Diogenes lighthouse in Procampur. This lighthouse was once a library though it has burned out several times. It is said that now it holds many records dealing the Inner Sea commerce.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The lighthouse contained a volume of piracy on the Inner Sea, and this was the only reference to a Jalor. This man was apparently a scourge of commerce, particularly against Sembian interests in the Vast. There is no record of his death, however the last record of his doing was DR 1168. There is one picture that apparently depicts him, though he is in a chaotic and bloody battle between ships. It looks as though he is wielding a blue hued buckler with characteristic round studs around the perimeter.

The coordinates end up pointing the party to a rocky out crop where they encounter an illusion of a man, the likeness of the Jalor from the pirate log, who says:

"So ye want this Shielddo ya? Unfortunately I decided not to retire. Retire, me? Ha! I have a fight left in me! No sail south to more adventure. Someday I will die, and who knows what will become of my material things? Im sure ill be stripped to the bone on the Hold! HAahaAHhAHAhAHA! Anyway - good luck!"

As the illusion fades a map appears and floats to the ground. The map is of the Pirate Isles.
