Of course it can turn the tide of an encounter, but so can many other feats. How many feats has Bob spent to get to this point? How does it compare to say, a warrior kitted out with Power Attack/Cleave/etc.? I think that it is good, but not overpowered.

I agree...but

Bob

Regarding "Spellfire Mastery", do you meet the prerequisites?

Prerequisites: Spellfire Wielder, drain permanent item class ability, Spellcraft 12 ranks

I think that it is good, but not overpowered.

What about the fact that spellfire people are apparently immune to magic that targets them?

But Mardoc can only hold up to a certain amount of magic... after that he's vulnerable, right? Isn't there a maximum number of spell slots he can absorb? After that he starts leaking energy and can be targeted normally?

That's how I'd take him out... overload him with a bunch of low-level mages just magic missiling the hell out of him and then have the big bad roll in for the big finish.

No hes not. Anything "over" results in "harmless discharge", but still bassically discharges the spell. Thats a dilemma. Even if spellfire did max out making him unable to absorb it really wouldnt matter that much.

Since you can absorb as a free action, it would all need to happen in one round. He can expend up to his ECL on his round. So when 18-22 is your max, you can see how hard it is to "overload" when you can just dump off 14 lvls on your round...

Im not hunting for a nerf here, but maybe some mitigation...

I can't speak to the rules of spellfire but there are definitely ways for enemies to get around it. First off you've said that their are very few spellfire wielders in faerun so a lot of potential enemies should know who Ike is and what he can do. Maybe not a bunch of Malar worshiping hicks but certainly most high level arcane casters and worshipers of Shar would know better than to target him.

It does seem weird to me that spellfire can absorb energy from the shadow weave. Even if no rules exist for shadow magic to counter spellfire you should consider making some up. After all is shadow magic a dire threat to the weave or isn't it? If all else fails you could throw some psionics at us and see what happens.

Regarding the shadow weave - the way I understand it - it is virtually the same as the weave proper. It is a conduit to manifest raw magical energy. Prior to the weave, casters drew on the raw energy and did amazing things (i.e. elven mythals) - but in the long run, we see how dangerous it was (Netherese cataclysm). Once Mystra (variations) created the weave - this limited the ability for all but gods to use raw magic. The shadow weave works just like the weave in that way. Spellfire - is the manifestation of raw magic, so it can be absorbed just the same.

Im not looking for a way of countering bobs spellfire ability. Im more concerned about how balanced it is. Im struggling with the fact that basically no magic that targets him directly can ever effect him. Are there any combination of feats or class abilities that do this?

Im considering changing the Improved Absorption feat that allows him to absorb as an immediate action. Readying an action to absorb will be an automatic success as normal, but to attempt to do it as a free action should require some form of a check. If he is flat footed the check should be higher.

or if thats too strict, he can only absorb up to his limit (con score). Or in attempting to negate a spell through absorption that would set him over the limit - a check is required...

How about he can only absorb and/or discharge ECL in one round? So he can absorb X spell levels targeting him, but then on his turn he can only discharge ECL-X. Or if he goes first in initiative, if he blasts X spellfire, then later that round he can only absorb ECL-X. And negating spells that he doesn't absorb because he is full seems wrong. Sorry bob, but that does seem too good.
