Bastard system 2.0 is essentially 3.5 with a few significant changes. HP: max 1st level and 1+CON mod every level thereafter. getting crit by the raging orc with the greataxe is usually fatal to lesser men... Armor: armor gives you DR equal to armor bonus, +1 for light, +2 for mediuim,+3 for heavy. I've tweaked the numbers a bit, but they are close to book. After X hits, armor has chance to be damaged, chance goes up as hits increase. then must be repaired. Shields: Shields are better. higher AC bonuses, and absorb all damage on a successful defense. and by absorb i mean take damage. small wood shield, for example, has hardness 5 and 7 HP. Defense rolls: pg 25 of dms, defense roll is AC -10. roll once for entire round. considering giving additional attackers in round cumulative +2 to hit. Fatigue: warriors can fight a certain number of rounds before making roll against fatigue. armor and shilelds increase your fatigue score. roll is based on STR and CON. Initiative: armor and shield and weapons modify your initiative. heavier equals slower. low magic: will be healing. chirgeon class, or just modified experts. let me know what you guys think Edited by cptahubb, Oct 4 2011, 10:54 AM.

The interaction between HP and damage soaked and dealt is yet to be seen. Remember that all the combat mechanics where extensively play tested to balance out. I think you should look at this as a hybrid game specific to the story you want to run. More of a MOD than a 'new' system. Obviously it is tailored to your idea of a low magic world. So it more setting specific. If you could have a index card sized cheet sheet that was able to show all the combat tweaks it would help as a player. As it is now the first run we will all be in the dark, but after we die a few times we will be able to see what works best. Allot of death in this game? One idea is to have us each represent a major Lord, and the characters we play represent one of our soldiers. That would make 'filling in' much easier after deaths, while still giving us the continuity of a long term 'PC' throughout the game. This could make playing a more deadly game pretty fun actually. |

the average blow struck by a strong warrior wielding a longsword against an opponent wearing chainmail will be soaked. the average blow struck by a strong warrior wielding a greatsword against an opponent wearing full plate will be soaked. with a longsword it takes a very strong warrior and/or max damage/crit to hurt an opponent wearing full plate. having a shield is really useful! but they do get broken. from my initial testing, combat will be longer. more blows will be struck without effect. but on the flip side, hp totals will make taking a 5 damage wound a big deal. your first comment is right on the money though. the DR is really the crux of the issue. i might bring the DR down a point or two. As far as dying, my initial thought is that you will all be serving lords in the classic feudal mode. the way it will work is each knight has two vassals one level lower than him. each of those has two guys serving him. you guys will start at the bottom and maybe work your way up. as you advance you will be be keeping track of the men you command.if you should die, you can play the guy that steps up to fill the void, assuming your Lord okays it. also, as i will be having years pass, you will be able to play your son(s), since hereditary title is common. I will list sometime soon the exact numbers of what im working with in table form so it is easy to see. also handouts. combat will start with two rolls, initiative and defense. both will be for your entire round. |

Also, wearing no armor will give you a +6 initiative bonus. i also currently have being unarmed at a +6 initiative bonus as well. this seems extreme at first glance, and i might reduce the unarmed bonus, but what i'm going for is completely unencumbered people going first. also, i will discontinue the team initiative, except in battles, which of course there will be a lot of. Your fatigue score is your STR mod plus your CON mod. armor shields and weapons have a fatigue score. You add up your equipment fatigue numbers and subtract it from your ability numbers. if the result is positive or zero, you can fight 5 rounds before having to make a fatigue roll (STR + CON) against a set DC (5 to start). If the result is negative, you can fight 5-(the negative result) rounds before having to make a fatigue roll. if you result is negative, you also take a penalty on the roll equal to the negative number. this seems complicated, but it really isn't. after 5 more rounds the DC goes up. On the first failed save, you become fatigued. on the second failed save, you become exhausted. on the third failed save, you become incapacitated.

Im thinking that for sake of diversity, all of us being drone fighters may get old. THAT said, if their is an additional (sub)game, that being the role of our Lords... that could perhaps allow the diversity/individuality that all bring us to RPGs. Idea: Beginning of session. We are playing as our lords. (All common/family interests in the realm, or a trade guild, or all relatives of a king...) Role play out the what ever intrigue besets us, provision and dispatch our knights. Then we play the main game, where we actually run through the adventure - playing the PCs. They dont have to be total lemmings...but the generation can be much more basic, perhaps a random trait for RP factor. I really like the idea of a more dangerous game. The problem is always PC replacement, but what if each lord has the Leadership feat, and we play the followers. Each time the lord "levels" the followers pool/lvl increases.... Some nights you could send us on specific missions where we send our few best, other nights we could do battles - being able to replace low level pcs as they die.... Oh and so you know, Ill play what ever you put together...not trying to hijack your game.... How do you recover from fatigue, and are there ways around it? |
