Ravenbrooke, England, home for Chad Daniels. He’s lived here his entire life and though it gets a tad bit on the boring side for most residence, there isn’t anything about his life that is. Of course being a werewolf tended to do that to a person. It was easy to tell by looking at him that he was used to the place, he knew where he was going and he knew the short cuts of getting where you wanted to go. He knew all the locals and got along with them for the most part, there were only certain people whom he didn’t get along with very much. Vampires, for example. Those that had permanent residence here he kept a close eye on and though he knew that most didn’t mean much harm he kept close tabs on every single one of the filthy blood suckers.

Humans and shifters however he did get along with, except however hunters. Over the course of the last year or so something had been happening. He had noticed that the population of the town was growing and yet it was also decreasing with so-called disappearances or murders. He knew all too well that it meant the hunter population was up, and it was his job as the leader of the pack to try and figure out how to go about the situation.

For the moment however, he was busy scouting out the forest surrounding the town. With his keen senses he was able to find several traps meant for wolves and he disarmed them pretty easily. It wouldn’t take much for one of the pack members to step into one them while in wolf form and get shot by silver to have their lives ended. As pack leader he was going to make sure that by the next full moon came around that it wasn’t going to happen.

Jessica didn't generally go out an destroy traps. Actually, she was pretty content to sit back and let the guys of the pack handle it. But lately, she had gotten tired of them yanking on her chain just to piss her off. Jess heard the same comments over and over again. All about how she was a prissy girl who acted like she was better than everyone else. All about how she never pulled her own weight. All about how she thoughts because she was a Lee, she didn't have to do anything. That wasn't the case at all. So, with determination, she had marched up to Chase, a pissed off look sparking in her eyes. She told him, in no uncertain terms, that she was going out with him today, and nothing anyone could say would stop her.

Generally, Jessica stayed away from people. Especially girls. She had a bad temper and it was no secret to anyone that she would go off on you for saying one things wrong. It was how she defended herself. She was always so sure that someone was going to say or do something to hurt her and she wouldn't stand for it. Just because she was a girl, she wasn't going to sit around and let someone push her to do what they wanted to. She wouldn't let anyone say anything bad about her. The only person she let get a word in edgewise was Chad, and that was only because he knew how to get her calm enough to talk to her.

Honestly, Jess would almost rather be anywhere else right now. She was kind of miserable and she had fallen into a stony silence. After tossing her hair up into a ponytail, she didn't say much to Chad- which was unusual. Normally, she'd be all over him. But the things people were saying behind her back was really beginning to eat away at her. Jessica usually put herself out there. She was loud and obnoxious and she knew that she was pretty. She liked flirting, she liked affection, and generally she gave it to anyone she wanted, anytime she wanted. Jessie had heard what even the other pack member said about her, and she was stewing in silence, just letting her anger build and simmer. It wouldn't be long before she snapped and she honestly couldn't say she'd care if she hurt someone.

Jessica gave some pause when she happened on a trap she didn't recognize and she froze at the smell of blood, her body almost seizing up. She didn't do well around blood, not after everything she went through. And at last, she spoke. "Chad?" Jessie's voice had gone kind of high and she hated how she wounded, but she couldn't control herself at the moment. She was mentally freaking out. This was why she didn't come out on these little explorations. This was also why she should really get a handle on letting people goad her into doing things.

Out of the entire pack, Chad was probably the only one to actually get Jessica to shut up and listen a majority of the time. Maybe it was because he was the pack leader, or maybe it was because she just had this thing for him that she couldn’t get over that made it work out. But either way if some shit came up between her and someone else chances were that Chad wasn’t too far behind to clean up the mess. It was something that he was used to by now, he’d put up with her long enough to know how she worked and what made her tick. Now granted it’s never easy trying to control her, it never is when it came to trying to control a bunch of werewolves who have different levels of anger issues. Chad was one of those people who had learned to control his own just so that he wouldn’t go completely off the walls at someone who pissed him off.

He knew how Jess felt about everyone in the pack and those outside of it, how they talked about her behind her back and even sometimes right in front of her. Hell he even got pissed off sometimes, but that was only because he was tired of hearing about it. Despite her being the way she was there were some times when he did not put up with some of the crap that was going around and he showed it too. When it came to pack members there was only so far you could go to torment them. Jess had been in the pack long enough for them to stop poking fun at her and he was getting to the point where he just wanted to tell them off.

He didn’t fight with her when she told him that she was coming with him today, he knew she needed some time to herself even if it was with him and he needed another pair of eyes anyway to keep an eye out in case he missed a trap. He wasn’t too far off from where she found one and even before he heard her say his name he smelled the blood. Walking over he looked down at the trap and sighed a little bit, there wasn’t any mistaking that it was werewolf blood; even in human form his sense of smell was better than a human. Grabbing a long tree branch he set the trap off with it and then tossed what had been cut off away. ”We can’t help him now Jess.” He told her as he bent down and found where it was nailed into the soil. Pulling it out he lifted it up and put it over his shoulder before continuing on.

For a long time, she stood there frozen, not even daring to move. Her heart was thundering in her chest and she couldn't take her eyes off of where the trap had been. No one really knew what happened in her past. She had worked hard to keep tight lipped about it. Unless one of her brothers had spoken about it, not even Chad knew about it and that was saying something. Slowly, each of her muscles uncurled and her thumb absently traced over the burn mark she had in her palm from where she was branded. When people asked about it, she just shrugged and pretended she didn't know what they were talking about. The pack had finally realized, after her nearly taking someone's head off because they wouldn't stop talking about it, that it wasn't a subject she was willing to talk about. It became even more obvious when she bristled at Chad. it was pretty obvious to everyone that she liked him and so that shocked everyone.

After she was able to unwind and pull her gaze away, she forced her feet to move and trailed after him quietly. She was more like his shadow than anything. Jessica concentrated on carrying some traps herself, staring silently at the sharp edges. She gave a shudder and then forced her gaze away. Sometimes she wondered why she still stuck around Ravenbrooke. She knew her younger brother enjoyed it here and he had friends. Unlike her, he got along with everyone easier. He was like a puppy dog with his big brown eyes and shaggy hair, and the way he was so aloof and gangly. She loved her brother to death and would do anything for him. So, there was her answer. If it wasn't for David she would've hightailed it out of there in no time. She wasn't comfortable with being in one place. It made her paranoid that someone was watching her. Jessica always had flashes back to that night and she was sure someone was going to come back for her. And they would have to kill her before she would ever let them near her brother.

More silence passed by and then Jessica took in a deep breath. "Hey Chad?" She was quieter than usual and she carefully stepped over another trap, bending down to pull it up. "Do you think I'm just an annoying prissy bitch?" She fidgeted a bit. Jess knew she could be mean- especially when someone was messing with someone that was important to her. And especially when people started running their mouths about things they didn't know nor understand. People were constantly trying to guess at her past and dig and dig into old wounds just to pull her down. She was working hard to keep her chin up and was determined not to let anyone see her fall, but it was getting harder. And the whispers and occasional things to her face was beginning to make her stop and think and take inventory. No one thought she had any real feelings other than anger and being a flirt.

As he walked, Chads senses were on overdrive. Any time he was out here they always were. They were always keeping his senses wide open in case there was someone lurking in the distance, watching them. He stopped every once in a while to pull out a trap and throw it over his shoulder. The silence loomed over them as they continued to trek over the lush soil beneath them. He knew the forest like the back of his hand, ever since his first change he made it a point to come out here and make sure where he was going any time he changed. Of course when you were in wolf form that wasn’t too hard to do to begin with. Mostly because in your wolf form your senses were about ten times stronger than when you were in human form.

Chad didn’t know anything about Jessica’s past and the last time he had asked her about it, about the scar on her hand she flipped out and after that he just left it alone. And try as he might he tried to tell the other pack members the same thing, but they insisted on pushing her to her breaking point and that in itself pissed him off a little bit. Respect was what he expected from the pack, and what he was seeing was not. He barked out orders left and right and it didn’t seem to faze them one little bit.

He stopped dead in his tracks when he heard her question and turned around to look at her with a curious look on his face. ”Why would you ask something like that?” He asks looking at her. ”Jess, okay I’m going to be honest here alright. You are a bitch sometimes. Prissy, on occasion. But just like everyone else you have a reason you’re like that and you just don’t want to talk about it.”

Absently, she rubbed her hand against her jeans as if that could make the mark disappear. It was always a reminder of what she had been too young to do. As he spoke, her lips pressed together a bit and then she forced a smile that was flat and clearly a lie. "People just seem to think I'm some emotionless robot. Like, "why the hell should Jessica have feelings?" So I just thought I'd ask." Her tanned shoulders moved up and down in a shrug as if to say she didn't care when the truth was that she did. She moved past him and tried to ignore the fact that that bugged her. She'd had a crush on Chad since she was ten years old. That was almost half of her life. But what was it worth when you couldn't even tell someone what had truly happened to you? It was hard to believe it was ten years ago that her brothers were murdered right in front of her eyes.

Jessica slowed her steps and found herself staring down at the scar on her hand for a silent moment. She let the hand drop to her side and dangle there for a moment. "Ten years ago, almost to the date, I was branded with a mark." She lifted her hand and stared down at it again for a moment. "Because I was the daughter of a pack leader that people didn't like. The only daughter." She paused, unsure of why she was saying all of this. Instead of continuing on, she took in a deep breath and closed her eyes for a moment. "Have you ever watched someone die?" The question was light, almost casual sounding. But if you knew Jess, you could read the undertone there. That this wasn't just a causal conversation she had decided to have at random. It had been something that had been on her mind for a long time.

Of course, none of this was any excuse for the way she behaved. She knew it was wrong. But that wall came up every dang time. She wanted to be comfortable around people, but at the same time she wanted them at a distance. She was a really complicated kind of girl and she found herself lost in thoughts of her dad and what he would think of her. None of them were good thoughts.

Standing there, Chad watches Jessica with a look that was sort of on the curious side of things. ”Yeah, they do. Sometimes I even think that, but we just don’t understand why you’ve got to be so hot headed all the time. That’s all.” He told her honestly. He watched her for a moment longer and as she walked past him he was beginning to wonder if that was all he was going to get out of her on this trip. Everyone knew she had feelings for him; it was something that had always been in the open since she joined the pack. At first it had been sort of annoying having her tag along everywhere he went, following him like she was his little puppy dog. But over the years he learned to live with it.

When she stopped again he watched her closely waiting for her to do something. And when she started to explain what happened to her ten years before hand he was a tad bit shocked at her sudden interest to discuss what happened. When she asked that question he looked down at the ground for a moment and then spoke. ”Nobody that I was close to.” He told her as he looked up again. ”Jess if you don’t want to talk about this you really don’t have to.” He didn’t want to upset her and he really didn’t want her to think he was just saying that to get her to shut up. He meant what he was saying, if she didn’t want to she didn’t have to.

She had nothing to say to that explanation. At first, all she did was watch him, because of course he would identify with the others. She had always been on the outside and would continue to be on the outside. And sure it was hard for her to talk about what went on. But it was over and done with right? It cut but it wasn't like she could get anymore screwed up because of it. She gave her shoulders a shrug again as she moved her eyes around, not really seeing anything. "I watched as two of my brothers died." Her voice was even and calm and she had been transported from where she was. "I did nothing. Do you know what that feels like? To know that you failed someone?" Another one of those flat smiles appeared on her face and then she looked away. "It's fine. No one really gives a shit anyway. Just another sob story to pile on top of the residents of Ravenbrooke, right?" She was being crass, yes, but it was how she was trying to cope with it. All she wanted to do was collapse into a little ball and cry her eyes out. But she couldn't be that girl anymore. She had to be strong and brave because people depended on her. She needed to remain in control of her emotions, but her trembling lips told another story all together.

Jessica carefully set the traps down and took a minute to just cover her face and get some composure. She didn't want to lose it. Didn't want anyone to see her break, but especially not the leader of her pack. And it wasn't even the crush talking either. She wanted to prove that she was strong enough to do this. She was hell bent on being seen as an equal and not just some snobby spoiled girl who threw a fit when she didn't get what she wanted. After a few moments, her facade was back in place and she lowered her hands slowly, trying not to breath too deeply because the scent of that blood still clung to her. It was almost enough to make her sick.

"I'm going to ask you a question and I want you to tell me the truth." Her eyes were set in that determined way she got when she was braving up to hear something she didn't want to think about. "Why do you put up with me? I know you don't like me." She squared her shoulders a bit. "All I've done is annoy the hell out of you. Is it David? Or just the fact that I'm another werewolf? Because, honestly, if it's sympathy or pity or a favor, I don't think I can stand it anymore." She was tired and it was there in her expression. "I need people that can accept me for who I am, not settle because they're being forced to." Jessica wasn't too sure what she meant by that at all, but it felt right to say.

It was strange to see her the way she was now. It was like she was some other person all together from the one he was used to since he’d met her. She just seemed like a scared little girl needing someone to hold her close and tell her everything was going to be alright. But he couldn’t do that, if things were normal, if they were normal, maybe things would be different. But standing there now with her, holding traps meant for what they were he knew it wasn’t possible. He listened to her as she spoke and when she was finished he looked at her again. ”You were nine, Jess, what were you supposed to do?” He knew she felt horrible for not trying to do something about what happened, but there was little that a ten year old girl could’ve done. The very fact that she thought she had failed them because she didn’t do a damn thing sort of made his heart sink but he didn’t let it show. Instead he continued to listen to her.

When she stated speaking again after the silence fell over them once more he set his own traps down and leaned up against a nearby tree. He looked down for a moment just listening to her and their surroundings. When she was finished he didn’t answer right away. He’d picked something up about ten yards from where they were standing and it wasn’t an animal. He looked up again and looked at her, moving his finger to his lips to silence her for a minute so he could hear well. His brown gaze moved around trying to pin point where it was coming from. ”Stay here.” He told her sternly and then he pushed himself off and headed in the direction he heard the noise from. By the time he had gotten back to where he had left her he was looking at her and then he spoke his answer. ”My dad took you in because you needed a pack, Jess. Wolves aren’t meant to be alone, we aren’t any different. You may annoy the hell out of every single one of us, but both you and David are a part of this pack because you need it. You may not want to admit to that because you want to be this brave person. But you aren’t, Jess. I just saw that. You don’t want to be alone.”

All that Jessica could provide as an answer was a shrug of her shoulders. She didn't know, but it had to have been something different than cowering in the snow, letting the blood spray on her and her mother and other brothers. She had collected herself that night and wordlessly picked up her little brother. She had wiped his little face an hands as her mother took care of her other brother. And then they had staggered on. There hadn't been time to clean herself or her mother and she had had to walk for hours with the drying blood of her brothers' all over her clothes and face. Her hand had burned, she was tired, her brother was heavy, but she never once stopped to put him down or shift her position. The other two were left out in the cold, without a proper burial, without even the slightest hint to what kind of a burial they would have gotten if the pack was around.

When the Lees had shuffled into Ravenbrooke in a scared silence, they had been very thankful for Chad's dad. He set them up with the house on the edge of town. Finally, after so long of running, Jess had felt like she could breath. She was uncomfortable, at first, with the pack, but soon she had settled in. Even after her mom had left, Rex Daniels had kept an eye on Jess and her brothers, making sure they were okay and safe. Safety was a hard thing to come by, though, and most of the time, Jessica had spent her nights wide awake, listening, making sure no one was going to come beating down her door.

She froze immediately when he held his finger to his lips, her ears perking up at the sounds as well. Jess slowly nodded her head when he spoke, their eyes connecting and communicating at the same time. If she failed at anything else, she did all right at keeping a level head in unknown situations. She was actually pretty good at whipping the pack into shape when it was time to be serious and quiet. Honestly, Jess knew that was a good thing, that in a time of crisis, they really listened and didn't just treat her like a freak. When Chad came back and spoke, she lowered her eyes slowly to the ground. He was right, she didn't want to admit it. She was terrified of being alone and that was a vulnerability she had tried to stuff down and failed. Jess lived her days out wondering who the next person was going to be to leave. Her younger brother? Maybe thinking that he was doing something good and being brave. Her heart contracted at that thought and she bit down on her lip hard. "We should probably get going." She said at last after clearing her throat. Jessica carefully retrieved her traps from the ground and then straightened up.

"You know, all you had to do if you didn't like me following you everywhere was to tell me to beat it. I may not have listened the first few times, but I would've caught the hint." Her mouth twitched slightly. She was attempting a joke but wasn't sure it had gone over all that well. Jessica took in a deep, slow breath and let it out slowly. She still felt like they were being watched and it made her uncomfortable. Keeping her voice casual and low, she licked her lips. "Do you feel like you're being watched or is that just me being paranoid?" She made sure to keep it to where only he could hear her, her hand automatically tightening around the chains of the traps in her hand.

Living in a pack was like living in one big family. Not all of them were blood related but they it felt like it sometimes. They got into feuds, they kissed and made up and then everything would be alright again. It didn’t matter who you were, in Rex Daniel’s eyes if you needed someone to lean on his pack was always there. Sure there were times when member’s left because they didn’t want to stick around anymore. But there were always new ones to take their place later on down the road. It wasn’t any different when the Lee’s came into Ravenbrooke looking for a place to stay. Rex knew they were wolves even before they said anything. He let them into his pack with open arms and when Jessica’s mother left, well in some ways he took the two Lee kids under his wing.

When Chad was younger he never understood why his father would welcome people he didn’t know into the pack. He could never understand how he could be so trusting and now that he was the pack leader he understood. It was instinct, you knew just by looking at someone who you could and couldn’t trust. He watched her carefully waiting for her to say something and he nodded lightly when she said they should get going. Picking up the traps he had set down he put them over his shoulder and started walking again when he heard her speak again. A small laugh escaped his lips. ”I doubt it, once you got your heart on something you hardly go away.” He says looking over his shoulder at her with a teasing smile. He looked ahead of him again and listened as she spoke. ”Keep your ears open, if you hear anything strange let me know.” He told her. Truth be told he felt like that all the time. And right now something just didn’t feel right to him.

A soft laugh fell from her lips and Jessica finally managed a small smile at him. "Eh, you're probably right. I would've done it more obviously because I knew it annoyed you." The brunette shook her head a bit. She half wondered how he could stand her now but just didn't want to ask at this point in time. Instead, she focused on keeping her steps light and keeping her ears open. She nodded her head slightly at his request, even though he couldn't see it. Not even noticing, she took a half step closer to him. When she could feel his familiar body heat, her muscles slowly relaxed, but she didn't stop to take a look around. Her arm brushed lightly against his as they walked but she didn't say anything. Instead, she chose to keep her sense flared out and when she heard a branch snapping behind them, she gave a slight pause, flickering her eyes over her shoulder. Strange. She heard the snapping noise but no one was behind them. She gave a little shiver, thinking about how familiar this feeling was. The other wolves had crept up on her family like thieves in the night. And then they were suddenly there. It wasn't a full moon, so there would be no changing. But still, there was something familiar about the charged air around them.

Jess suddenly got a strong whiff of werewolf and her knees locked up. Her hand moved of its own accord and wrapped silently around Chad's. She hadn't meant to do that but there was no way in hell she was going to let go. The hair at the back of her neck stirred and she sucked in a deep breath as someone spoke lowly. "Well, well, well. If it isn't little miss Jessica all growed up." When she turned to look at who spoke, they were gone. Her brown eyes were wide, her heart thundering in her chest. She wasn't sure if he'd heard it too, or if she was going crazy. She couldn't get herself to calm down either and her body let loose of an uncontrollable shudder. She took in a deep breath and forced her fingers to uncurl from his hand before she sat down on the ground heavily, The traps dropped to the ground behind her and she curled her hands into fists, wincing at the burning sensation in her scarred hand.

She had no idea what had just happened or if it was only her who had experienced it. She only knew that she could move right now. Jessica sucked in a deep breath and shoved her fingers into her hair, knowing she had to be acting like a crazy person. "Please tell me I wasn't the only one who heard that." Her voice had jumped up a few octaves and hissed out of her mouth in a whisper.
