So, long and short of this is, I want you to outline what sort of character you want to play here for me. I'm not just looking for a class listing, I need to know their goals, general background, ambitions short and long term, and so on. After that, I want to know what you, the player, are looking to get out of this. Are you looking more for a tabletop version of the Pokemon games, focused almost exclusively on adventure and combat, or are you looking for the full RPG experience? Deeper immersion, more reliance on in-game conversation and character development? But first thing's first, I want to know which Pokemon you wish to start with. Pick from the list below, and go ahead and post which one you'd like, as quickly as you can please. Keep the following notes in mind: -This list is not set in stone. Others can be negotiated, within reason. -This list is not first-come, first served. If a conflict of interest occurs, we will handle it. -This is not the time for dick measuring. You're all in this together, don't look to snipe your teammates. -These are not the "cannon" starters. This is supposed to be an entirely different experience, and changing this element will throw you all quite off-kilter. -Finally, this is your STARTER. Don't just beg and whine to start with your favorite Pokemon. It will create a more rewarding experience for you to go, find, and capture or befriend your favorite yourself than to just be handed it. The following are choices I've approved, based upon PTA's suggestions. Aron Azumarill Bellsprout Budew Caterpie Cleffa Geodude Gothita Hoppip Horsea Igglybuff Klink Lillipup Lotad Machop Magby Magnemite Mareep Nidoran F Nidoran M Oddish Pichu Pidgey Pidove Poliwag Ralts Roggenrola Sandile Seedot Sewaddle Shinx Slakoth Solosis Spheal Starly Swinub Timburr Togepi Tympole Vanillite Venipede Weedle Whismur Wurmple Zubat |

-Yawn- Alright. For a starter I'll go with Shinx as a #1 preference. I'll start drafting up the other info to post in a bit. |

The concept for the kinda character I want to build would be based around the Martial Artist character class, I want to eventually become an Aura User when I head to the later stages of the game. That being said, the background for my character is that he comes from a long line of marital artists within his family. As a family tradition when the the child reaches a certain age they are given a Pokemon egg (usually fighting) that is reflective of what their potential is. The Pokemon that is hatched from this egg is intended to be the family member's lifetime partner through thick and thin. At the age of 15 my character received a Riolu egg based on the perceived aptitude in physical combat and hints toward a innate ability in perceiving auras. (when he comes into the game). I am still working on some of the details but as of right now his current motivation is that he has a hero complex and that he feels that he needs to protect any Pokemon at any cost and that in order to accomplish this goal he must of course get stronger, train relentlessly. He views challenges of say Gym Leaders or other obstacles as things to test his current progress. Some ideas of what I want to end up with as Pokemon in my "final" team. Or rather just a list of things that may end up in my team: Lucario(the starter I would like to ideally have) Charizard Infernape Herracross Straptor Mew (the legendary I would like to eventually obtain) Galvantula Scrafty Toxicroak Brivary Breloom Aggron and many others. Details still of course need to be ironed out (I haven't even named my chara yet) so let me know with some feedback or questions. |

Riolu would be an acceptable starter (Lucario's a bit much, all things considered) if you're dead-set on it. I haven't decided whether or not Legendary captures will be a possibility. A few encounters are guaranteed, and hopefully they will be terrifying. Pokemon might eliminate a large chunk of my preferred Lovecraftian storytelling elements, but it doesn't completely rob me of my ability to scare the pants off my players, which is one of the strong points and focuses of my DMing, no matter which system is being used. |

Starter choices would be the following in the given order: Shinx, Venipede, or Magby. Seeing as Shinx has been asked for, I'll happily take a Venipede. Seeing as how the list only contains 1 Fire pokemon (Magby) I would revise this or be open to quite a lot of negotiations. I would allow any Pokemon that is of the Baby stage, and possibly a handful of the true starters (one of each type perhaps?). I'm all for roleplay, though not so much that battling takes the back seat. Not interested in the contest mechanics, but I would like to see some non-battle events that will get us badges (if badges are being used in this setting that is), such as how Ash got the Rainbow Badge from Erika despite not finishing the battle because he risked his life to save the pokemon from the burning down gym. Basic character background/information: Yuusuke is on the cruise in hopes of earning enough fame to become a gym leader like his father in their home region (this region is not the one we are currently going to be in, if that is ok). This fame can be earned through badges or just being an outstanding citizen. Anything that will get his name circulating. Has no real preference for Pokemon types, though he does prefer those that stand out in physical strength and/or speed. Has no desire to catch'em all, but rather collect a few Pokemon to fill his team, and have a few (2-3) extras to switch out depending on the situation. Also has an interest in cooking and medicine, but he lacks the quality of being able to sit down long enought to get any real studying in to pursue these to any great extent. |

Outside locales are completely fine, and it'll keep me from accidentally nerfing any background details. Every character will have an equal share of the "Keh!? What is the place!?" mechanic as the cruise sails on, getting to exotic isles and such as it presses along. I may not have specified yet, but I don't intend for the campaign to be 100% Battle-Cruise. You'll each be (more or less) gaining your first 2-4 badges and a team hopefully up to the mid-30's on a traditional overland trek. As for the fire issue, that's the primary reason I said the list is up for debate. A few immediate candidates came to mind (Growlithe, Ponyta, etc) but they each presented interesting problems for starter-compatibility, such as evolution method (stones are a bit mean for starters) or untouchable overland speed for early-game. |

All that sounds ok to me. Seeing as we (assuming we don't get a 4th player) have all picked our starters, we just need to flush out character details and we can finally get his show on the road. |

As for Lucario I strictly listed as a final form for an intended possible final list (Riolu evolves into Lucario naturally). One thing I want to propose is that there should be an additional condition to the evolution to the ones who require a specific minimum# of days to evolve according to the Pokedex book for this game. They should also have to meet a specific loyalty level as well. As for the Lovecraftian scare the shit out of you moment, an encounter with Giratina sucking the cruise ship into the Lost Zone could be a distinct possibility. |

Huh, there used to be a happiness/loyalty system in regards to evolution. Wonder why it isn't included in their entries. The Evolver class (branched off of Breeder) has abilities that affect the level requirement, assuming the happiness requirement has been met. I'll look into this more. Gotta be somewhere. |

Yeah it is odd, they reference it in the Players Handbook but ignore it in the Pokedex. |

Loyalty, and how it all plays in, is listed in the GM Guide. Its specifically meant to be excluded from average PCs' knowledge to avoid exploitation. The short, cruel truth is "When the GM says it evolves, it evolves." |

Yeah, that's basically it. For all meta purposes, I would say Rank 3 is needed for Happiness Evolution, since most pokemon start off at Rank 2. But yeah, GM has final say (unless someone becomes an Evolver, then it's more in their hands). |

I guess that kinda makes sense in that matter. That would make it closer to the show in that regard. I am more inclined wanting to know how the evolution works especially since Riolu evolves in that manner. But I would rather it be at a more crucial moment when the story hits a climax instead of grinding for it. (i.e. stuffing Riolu's mouth with berries to increase loyalty and feed it a rare candy lol) |

They do a pretty good job of balancing it out. Dramatic timing is a key piece, and overgrinding, feeding, or candy abuse will actually make the Pokemon slowly grow to resent you. They have a general understanding of "nutritional value" and "general benefits," and so a nonstop barrage of candy and tiny fruit will turn even a Munchlax sour after a time. |
