If it's the Fox film starring Spencer Tracy, it's worth seeing. But despite an over-the-top fantasy sequence in Hell, it's not a horror film. At Coney Island, a tough drifter (Tracy) meets a kindly old man who offers moral lectures drawn from Dante's Inferno. A natural promoter, Tracy parlays that into an entertainment empire and marries the man's daughter. But hubris leads to dirty deals with tragic consequences, and he has to survive an inferno of his own before winning back his wife and son. The story plays like a no-nonsense gangster film, but along the way you get some serious spectacle: a somber pantomime of the shiny-skinned damned striking poses; a Cecil B. DeMille-style disaster at Coney Island; and finally an ocean liner catching fire during a huge party. And between times you've got a young Spencer Tracy playing a Jimmy Cagney character. |
