I watched 1949's Tarzan's Magic Fountain this weekend. This is the first of five Lex Barker appearances as our favorite apeman. The print showed some minor wear and tear but overall was just fine. Lex looks good as Tarzan with his athletic 6'4" frame. The one thing that was a distraction to me was the fact that he runs around the jungle in leather slippers. Considering the rough terrain that he covers it makes perfect sense to wrap his tootsies in protective leather, but it just doesn't fit in with my preconceived notions of Tarzan. The rest of the cast was enjoyable, including Brenda Joyce as a lovely Jane, Albert Dekker as Trask and Evelyn Ankers as Gloria James Jessup, an Amelia Earhart-type pilot who had been lost in a jungle crash 20 years previous. We also get Alan Napier as her sweetheart.

The plot involves the Magic Fountain which is in fact the Fountain of Youth. This secret is closely guarded by a tribe willing to go to any lengths to keep it undiscovered by the outside world. Tarzan knows the secret and when the tribe believes he betrayed their trust he becomes personna non gratis. They use a cool mounted crossbow that fires flaming spears to discourage unwanted guests.

Nothing groundbreaking here, but an entertaining time filler. I look forward to viewing the next four entries.
