The Curse of the Werewolf was *very* good - different slant on the legend with an excellent performance by Oliver Reed as the tormented whatisname! When I first saw it on TV, my Dad was *very* impressed with Oliver, but I was a little disappointed that the werewolf was blonde - I prefer brunette wolfies like Michael Landon and Lon Chaney. However, I was *wrong* - he's a grey wolf, so that's OK! I'm smiling having thoughts of a gay wolf, but we won't go there! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Prior to that saw The Brides of Dracula for the umpteenth time - still entertaining with a wonderful, chucklesome performance from Freda Jackson as the housekeeper at Castle Meinster!

Since I just recently got around to finally picking up Hammer's dvd of THE MUMMY, I thought the thread could be awakened (although, of course, it's not included in the collection currently under discussion). THE MUMMY has always been one of my favorite Hammers, easily finding its spot in the top five from that studio, and is also my favorite "Mummy Movie" as well. The Cushing/Lee chemistry is back again after CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN and HORROR OF DRACULA. Christopher Lee deserves full marks here for his sensitive, and terrifying, performance as the anciently cursed Kharis. The scene where he first sees Isobel, recognizing her as Ananka, is very tragic and moving, an amazing achievement being as the actor is only able to express himself with his sad dark eyes and pitifully pleading hands. I think THE MUMMY is also one of Hammer's most beautiful-looking films. A real winner for me showing that Terrance Fisher could take three fun, but creaking old pulp-style Universal efforts, THE MUMMY'S HAND, THE MUMMY'S TOMB, and THE MUMMY'S GHOST and turn them into a classy, superior production. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Universal fan through-and-through, but still I think Hammer made not only the best Mummy Movie here, but were also responsible for the finest productions featuring Dracula, Werewolf, and Phantom of the Opera as well. Just watched Kiss of the Vampire - classy with a novel way of disposing of the little blighters - how *do* they cram that excellent quality on those flippies?

Left Evil of Frankenstein till last - the monster(Kiwi Kingston) conjured up images of Mary Shelley's original and the burgomaster's wife (Caron Gardner) was very fetching
- in Maltin's Guide he says they recently added new scenes with new actors (the angry mob)!
Btw, Brides of Dracula has just been released in England at £12.99 with NO EXTRAS, so this set is a real bargain! |
