I can't believe that NOBODY has yet kicked off our animation thread, so I thought I'd do it with a list of some of my favorite cartoon shorts.

(1) Popeye the Sailor meets Sindbad the Sailor (Fleischer, 1936, directed by Dave Fleischer). The Fleischers kicked off a series of 2-reel color specials with this spectacular treat, as Popeye meets a Sindbad that looks and sounds suspiciously like Bluto. Eye-popping color, 3D effects, and Wimpy chasing a duck with a meat grinder. Available from several sources (it's in the PD), but the best is by Thunderbean Animation.

(2) Bimbo's Initiation (Fleischer, 1931, directed by Dave Fleischer). All those bizarre cartoons the druggies did in the '70s weren't a patch on this, the most surreal cartoon I've ever seen. Bimbo (a dog that looks nothing whatsoever like a dog, or any other animal) is kidnapped by a secret society. "Wanna be a member? Wanna be a member?" Betty Boop, who was still a dog in those days (a REAL dog, not an ugly woman) was there, too. Available on the Betty Boop 5-DVD collection, but only in France.

(3) Superman (Fleischer, 1941, directed by Dave Fleischer). May as well make it a trifecta for Fleischer: The first Superman cartoon (also called The Mad Scientist) was an Oscar nominee, and one of the finest (and most expensive) short cartoons of its time. Look for the Image Entertainment release.

(4) The Cat Came Back (Canadian Film Board, 1988, directed by Cordell Barker). For sheer belly-laughs, you've never seen anything like this one. It's pee-your-pants funny as a little yellow kitty refuses to leave his new home. Image offers this on one of their "Best of the Best" collections.

(5) Robin Hood Daffy (Warners, 1958, directed by Chuck Jones). Holy cow, where do you start with the Warners cartoons? There are maybe 100 of 'em at least that could occupy this spot, but this one -- with Daffy Duck trying to convince Porky "Friar Tuck" Pig that he's really Robin Hood -- makes me laugh the hardest. Available as a bonus on Warners' Adventures of Robin Hood DVD.

Can't argue with the Fleischer's version of Superman. They were great interpretations of the character.

I love ROBIN HOOD DAFFY, which reminds me of another of my all-time favorite Bugs Bunny cartoons. I can't remember the name, but it is the one where Bugs is tormenting the Sheriff of Nottingham. The Sheriff is trying to get Bugs out of the King's royal garden, to no avail. The best part is when Bugs actually "sells" part of the garden to the Sheriff, and the Sheriff starts building a house on it. As the Sheriff is happily singing and hammering away (building his house), the realization dawns on him of what he is doing. His face at that moment is priceless! I reference that scene whenever I see someone in a similar situation.

I wish I could remember the name of that episode. I hope it is on one of the Looney Tunes Golden Collections, that I have but have not had the time to watch.

I'd add Two Gun Goofy. Our hero happens upon a stage coach holdup by Pistol Pete. He is so smitten with a cute young woman whose face we never see that he foils the holdup without even realizing it. The scene then shifts to the local town where Goofy continues to foil Pete with a combination of oblivion and dumb luck. Available as a bonus on Disney's Apple Dumpling Gang special edition.

Well, SOMEBODY's got to mention ONE FROGGY EVENING.

Another classic is Van Buren's THE SUNSHINE MAKERS. I saw it first at the old Fillmore East. The Joshua Light Show used to run cartoons and serial episodes during intermissions.

It's a Fleischer film, in color, with a bunch of animals of various species boarding a rocketship to the moon. When they get there, they dance.

It's actually a very good cartoon, with that spiffy Fleischer 3D-type animation. The problem is the song, "Dancing on the Moon", which will stick in your brain and eat your grey cells until you've got no thought processes left.

Yeah, they're all newlyweds, taking the Honeymoon Express, a rocket that may have been the inspration for Commando Cody's ship in Radar Men From the Moon. The newlywed cats are late for the flight, and only the male cat gets on board--his wife shouts after the departing rocket "You left me on purpose, you alley cat!" He plays solitaire on the journey while the elephants, cows and giraffes all smooch and spoon; when they get to the moon (passing Jupiter and Mars), they all dance, then reboard the rocket for the trip back to earth. When they arrive, they are met by a formation of storks, delivering to each couple a baby--all except the cat, who then gets beat up by his missus as the thing fades out.

It's anthologized in a couple of places--it's on the Fleischer collection Somewhere in Dreamland, and I also have it in another classic cartoon collection somewhere.

It IS a catchy song, but it doesn't quite do what Gravy says--sheesh, if it did, think of all the money I could have saved on scotch over the years!

While reading the description of "Dancing on the Moon" I kept thinking I have seen this cartoon but I could not place it. Then Bonga mentioned "Somewhere In Dreamland" and that is where I have seen it. I have that collection. Gravy is correct about the song once it is in your brain it is difficult to forget it.

Maybe someone can help me identify one of my all-time favorite Termite Terrace productions. I don’t know the name nor do I know who the director was.

It’s a Porky Pig & he’s trying to rid his house of mice so he can sleep. He gets a cat from a pet store (like at 11:00pm????) & the feline dispatches the rodents in less than a minute of screen time. Unfortunately, said puss likes to imbibe & vocalize with his brethren. There follows the funniest send-up of a barbershop quartet I’ve ever seen! At one point, one of the felines says (with VERY slurred syllables) “you’re FLAT!” What makes it so funny (to me) is the cats never get hostile at all. They very cheerfully throw Porky out of his own house time after time!! The ending, although predictable, is funny & satisfying!!
