A favorite moment, if I remember it correctly: Jory falls through a trap door. A bunch of presumably vicious Great Danes jump in after him. Jory escapes. The villains arrive and look into the space below. They see the Great Danes sitting and looking back at them, a bit confused but calm. After that I couldn't forgive the Green Archer for shooting a few of them, even if they were tearing somebody apart.

A funny running gag had Jack Ingram as a fake Green Archer. The real Archer would sneak into the castle, encounter the gang run away, and they would give chase, encounter Ingram, and beat the crap out of him instead. In one scene, Ingram and the other thugs were playing tiddlywinks. Kit Guard was a real hoot as Dinky, but as I said before, no one was as daft as Fred Kelsey as Henderson.

The fake Green Archer is cleverly employed in Edgar Wallace's novel, but not in a comedic sense. He periodically emerged to menace Valerie Howitt, and since the reader didn't know until late in the story that he was actually one of Bellamy's henchmen, his appearances served to cast doubt on the Archer's motives — which, in turn, made it more difficult for readers to guess the Archer's true identity.

In both the book and the 1925 Pathé adaptation (which stays much closer to the book), the fake Green Archer is a brutish heavy named Lacy. This character doesn't appear in the 1940 serial; Jack Ingram's "Brad" is far less sinister.

I don't think you could call any henchman in a Horne serial sinister. The most sinister character in a Horne serial would be The Skull in DEADWOOD DICK, one of the better villains in any Columbia serial. Most sinister: The Octopus in THE SPIDER'S WEB.

Bats,
Neither of the versions of OFFICER 444 that you have originated from the Serial Squadron. As far as I know this title was never released by them. Email me for more info.

Hi Cat, great to see you post again, it has been way too long. I also don't remember Grood releasing 444.

At one point he sold someone else's transfer (Grapevine?). Perhaps, this is the source of the confusion.

Sarge, I think you might be correct. I bought a silent serial from Grood which might have been a Grapevine release.
