STUCK ON YOU, which went to No. 1.

Between his induction and discharge from the army, how many top 40 hits did Elvis have?

Jesse Garon

There were jokes about another (fictional) brother named Enos. You had Elvis the Pelvis and Enos the ...

From which group did Elvis get the idea of doing Hound Dog from and where did this happen? (I think this is a real toughie.)

I know that! The Reno Brothers!

Let me think up a question...

On August 28, 1930 every studio in Hollywood briefly shut down. Why?

You got the answer right, Don. But the location was Las Vegas. Freddy Bell and the Bellboys had essentially become a lounge act in Vegas with a sound that was a mix of early rock 'n' roll and Louis Prima style jump. Elvis saw them during his first visit to Vegas. The Freddy Bell version of "Hound Dog" had little relationship to Big Mama Thornton's original.

Well, the song as originally written, was clearly designed for a woman to sing. The modified version probbly wins some kind of award for making as little sense as possible.

Jazzy, was this Leiber & Stoller's first crossover song???

I started out saying yes but checked it out and I think "Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle Boots" might be the better answer. It was a minor hit in 1955. But it wasn't really an R&B tune so you might argue that it wasn't crossover at all but just a pop tune. So a case could be made for "Hound Dog" but the Presley version (and the Bell version before it) bear little resemblance to the original in terms of lyrics and even to some extent melody.

For the curious, here is the Bell version of the tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJQ-fDb4M4s

The Bellboys (mostly a bunch of Italian-Americans from Philly) were a very good band but Bell wasn't much of a singer. (And I should have spelled his first name "Freddie".)

Freddie Bell and the Bellboys show up in several rock 'n' roll movies and they're not very good in any of them.

Mainly because of Bell's singing. Understand, too, that they weren't really a rock 'n' roll group. Their musical roots were more in jump blues and early R&B. They owe a lot to the Treniers as well as Louis Prima (the Prima of the early '50s).

I was only wondering if that was the first "hit" L & S had in the "pop" market.

Good grief, I actually remember "Black Denim Trousers & Motorcycle Boots."

According to Wikipedia (& you can't get more reliable than that), L & S first "pop" hit was "Bazoom (I Need Your Lovin')" recorded by the same (lame) group that recorded "BDT & MB" the following year: The Cheers.

I don't remember ever hearing "Bazoom". If it was a hit, it must have been a very minor one. I'll agree that The Cheers were lame.
