The schedule for 2-disc "Disney Platinum" editions has been announced for the next year.

Coming in March, of course, is Peter Pan. In October, we'll get The Jungle Book. Then, in March '08 we'll have 101 Dalmations. A 2-disc edition of The Aristocats is also expected sometime in the next few months.

Also chiming in late here...fun board, thanks! Agree with a number of the estimable Gravy's opinions, but feel compelled to disagree on a couple of points.

I have a soft spot for Disney's 60s animated feature product, certainly not as lovingly detailed their first and second "Golden Ages", but to my mind featuring many memorable and engaging characters. Particular faves from this era are THE 101 DALMATIONS, THE JUNGLE BOOK, THE ARISTOCATS and, dare I say it, ROBIN HOOD (which I know is flimsy in many respects but owns a nostalgic place in my heart.)

And while the first RESCUERS doesn't win any awards in the great animation sweepstakes, the story (and Disney's imagining of Margery Sharp's classic characters of Miss Bianca and Bernard) is a winner. And THE RESCUERS DOWN UNDER may be an unnecessary sequel but it's a welcome one to me, even more fun than the original, and very nicely animated to boot.

And finally, I think you're being much too hard on ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE. For it's first hour, I found this film delightful in it's obvious visual homage to the worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Jules Verne, with a colorful cast of characters and a nicely serious feel (I've never been one of those who feels every Disney animated film needs songs). It does derail in the final reel, however.

Though they're beautifully animated, to be sure, I'm not a huge fan of the earliest Disney classics, such as BAMBI and SNOW WHITE...THE LADY AND THE TRAMP, THE LION KING and the frequently hilarious (and nicely stylized) EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE are more to my tastes.

I generally like all of Disney's feature length cartoons to an extent (with the glaring exception of HOME ON THE RANGE, which I have no desire to see). In contrast, I find most of their celebrated short films lushly animated but bor-ing, far less entertaining than the anarchic and gleeful cussedness of their counterparts in the WB stable.

I like them all up to The Jungle Book. I despise pretty much all of the garbage that's come out since. Even a boring trainwreck like Sleeping Beauty I can appreciate as an artful masterpiece compared to an abortion like Aladdin or The Fox and the Hound.

HARSH!

I get much enjoyment out of The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and Mulan. I like The Lion King well enough, too.

Thad's opinions on animation are usually pretty harsh, but he generally has well thought out reasons for them.

Oh, strong opinions are fine... And we all have likes and dislikes. Using terms like "garbage" an "abortion" to describe some films I myself enjoy DOES strike me as harsh, though! I will defend his right to trash anything he'd like, however. This IS a free country. Unless you're in New York or New Jersey; there are tolls.

Just out of curiosity, anybody else think Beauty and the Beast -- the only Oscar-nominated "Best Picture" feature cartoon -- is "garbage"? How about The Little Mermaid?

I'm not a big fan of the Disney's but Fantasia is truly a favorite animated film of mine.

Honestly, I find both Mermaid and Beast to be pretty stale, full of unimaginative animation. Those features, and many others around that time are so glossy and polished that there's no life in them.

Aladdin is funny though.

Personally, I think with Beauty and the Beast, and possibly The Lion King too, the score is the essence of the film, and not the animation.

Yeah, you may be right, and that may have something to do with what I don't like about them. As movies they're fine, but as cartoons, they're lacking.

"Aladdin" is a horrible feature. It stumbles all over the place, trying to be 'serious' in some parts, then all out-Tex Avery knock-off for the rest of the thing. All of the characters were repulsive looking other than Eric Goldberg's Genie.

"The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast" are very poor (though the design of the Beast is fantastic). Ugly characters, grating songs and voices... How were these films hits?

The only recent one I liked at all was "The Lion King", which doesn't make me say "They spent HOW much on this thing?!"

The only ones I can't watch all the way through are:

The Aristocats
Robin Hood
The Fox and the Hound
The Black Cauldron
Oliver and Company
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Pocahantas

The last "Y" is silent.  I tend not to be.

As comedian Ron White said about his being picked up by police on a DWI charge, "They informed me that I had the RIGHT to remain silent..(short pause).. I just didn't have the ability."
