Filmation's Flash Gordon

Filmation created an animated version of the Flash Gordon mythos called the New Adventures of Flash Gordon some time ago. There was a made-for-tv movie that aired once on NBC and later a 16 chapter serial on weekend mornings. The drawings really captured the spirit of the Alex Raymond comicstrip and was really action-packed and very exciting. A second season saw unfortunate changes such as it was no longer serialized episodes, the story was dumbed down and a "cute" little dragon friend was added. This killed the show, but the tv feature and first season serial were superb television.

Anyone have a source for these episodes?

I believe this is what you are looking for, BT:

Flash Gordon: The Complete Series

Unfortunately, the TV movie has never been released on DVD. The first five episodes of the series comprise cut-up segments from the the movie, but omit the WWII prologue.

I remember the movie. Scattered throughout were "adult" touches -- actually pretty harmless lines that tried to imply adult fare. Besides the WWII references, I remember the Lionman getting nostalgic over his homeland and sleeping (just sleeping) with a Lionwoman, and Flash being a little too coy about Princess Aura's sex appeal.

There was another animated Flash, with Gordon and company as hip modern teens. Zarkov was sort of an old hippie, while Ming was a reptilian mutant. Not sure if it came before or after "Defenders of the Earth", aka "Kids of Old King Features Franchises."

Then of course there was the big "Flash Gordon" movie, a weird cross between the comic strip and "Barbarella." One of those films that shot itself in both feet, specifically with the "comical" FOOTBALL game sequence early on.

(pre-edit I wrote "footgame game". Which actually sounds more fun)

The local Crest Theater showed the 1980 Flash film. Embarrassing to read how they talked it up as a "great film."

The Flash Gordon (1980) film is a cult classic-- it's bad but entertaining. I'm shocked by the number of my fellow comic artist friends who love it and call it their favorite film of all time, but then I'm a fan too, just wouldn't put it up there with Kane or Casablanca.

I wanted to love FLASH GORDON (1980), but I can't, though I don't hate it. It has some amazing visuals and had the potential to be really good, but the uneven tone and mixed acting styles doom it to cult status for me.
