The thing about Adventures of Superman was that Clark and Lois always came across as terribly sensible adults, like idealized schoolteachers. Despite the charm of the two actresses who played her, Lois was presented as almost anti-romantic (I recall exactly one occasion where Lois went on what seemed to be a real date. Perry White wondered -- for all of one line -- if Clark was jealous. He wasn't.).

Even now, when I'm up in the Perry White age range, I look at the show and feel they're older than me.

Then came Lois & Clark -- a great show (in its first season, anyway), but with a Superman who looked younger than Jimmy Olsen (who was replaced by a kid in the second season).

Jimmy Olsen (who was replaced by a kid in the second season).
FWIW, In the radio serial Jimmy Olsen was a kid. He started as a copy boy and only worked his way up to permanent cub reporter.

I think in many ways the radio Supey was the best. Much of what we think of when we think of the character today was first worked out on the radio show: Perry White, Jimmy Olson, many villains, Superman as a fighter for higher American ideals, etc. all were products of the radio show. Bud Collyer also did an outstanding job of dramatizing the character beyond the simplistic comic books. And the radio Superman really could fly because we could see him doing it in our heads.

I've always thought that was the problem with all the video and movie Supermen. They obviously weren't really flying like I knew they could. This is my kid self talking here. The George Reeves stuff came along and I liked it, but everything since then has been disappointing.

Love the Fleischer Superman cartoons also. Probably favorite incarnation of the character outside the comic books.

And the Fleischer cartoons used the radio voices for Superman/Clark and Lois.

For those of you in the Northeast, the Newbury Comics Chain has these for $7.99 - $9.99 per season right now. I'm not sure what they are going for at sites like Amazon, but I picked up all five seasons (with a Buy 3 get one Free offer) at Newbury for under $40.
