As we gear up for next month's Kong DVD release, there's a lot of great stuff coming out about what we can expect. An interesting interview can be found over at the Digital Bits:

Just to confirm: Best Buy has an exclusive edition of the DVD set. You get the tin and everything in it, PLUS Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young, PLUS five extra poster cards not in the set others are selling... all for a sale price this week of $33. A must-have.

DVD Set of the year in my opinion.

Some might be put off by the grainy nature of the picture, but it's very film-like and considering that only 3rd generation materials exist it looks darn good.

The almost 3 hours of documentary material (there's another hour about Cooper) is so good, I can see this being shown in college courses geared around film-making. Even if one is not a fan of the movie, this documentary is worth at least renting to get some wonderful insight on how this film was made and marketed.

This is the best the film has ever looked and there is absolutely no reason to disclaim or caveat.

I point out to film fans the presence of an overture and the repair of the splice as Kong falls down the Empire State Building.

Agreed... King Kong on DVD is worth the wait. With this and the Harold Lloyd set, I've been in movie heaven for the past few weeks.

Anecdote: I have a penpal in Oklahoma with whom I occasionally correspond, and I advised her that King Kong was now available on DVD... She said, "Oooh, I'm going to have to get that -- I love that film!" So the other day, she tells me that she bought the DVD and was all set to watch it that night. The next day, I asked her if she enjoyed it, and she said, "Yes, except the ending. It's too bad they don't get together." Well, I thought that was odd, to say the least, and I pointed out that a relationship between Kong and his leading lady wouldn't have worked out. "Yeah," she says, "but NOBODY gets the girl in the end. That's too bad."

Still confused, I said, "Well, I think it's understood that she ends up with Jack Driscoll, isn't it?"

"Who?"

"Jack Driscoll."

"You mean Jeff Bridges?"

That's when it dawned on me... she was talking about that god-awful 1976 version. Holy moley.

Always willing to captialize for a buck, that Jessica Lange Kong was released the same day as the others. At the local Entertainment Outlet, a guy was holding the Lange version and asked me if that was the one with the Peter Jackson commentary. Fortunately, I was able to save the guy $10 and two hours of wasted life he would never get back again.

That "release" of the 1976 Kong is a bunch of bull. As far back as I can remember there have been several copies at the local Circuit City. It may be a rerelease but it is most definitely not a new release.

Yes, they did re-release it (with an ugly new cover) in November.

Interesting sidenote from the reprint of the novelization of the screenplay (originally done in 1932):

The book hammers home the Beauty & the Beast analogy numerous times. It's Denham's theory that from the moment Kong saw Beauty in the jungle he was doomed.

"... Denham once again outlined his theory of how Beauty softens and attracts and in the end encompasses the destruction of the Beast. 'He'll lose Ann in the end,' Denham said. 'One way or another. And after he does, he'll never be quite the same king of the forest. Brute strength will have yielded to something higher, and by the extent of its yielding will be weakened for its future battles with other brutes.'"

This sets up the belief that even if they left Kong on Skull Island, he wouldn't have survived anyway.

Note: the scenes of the crew being decimated by the dinosaurs, spiders, etc are really well done in the book. There's also more background on Cooper beyond the excellent TCM documentary. Recommended.

Just watched part of KONG on TCM and was reminded of one week at USC. Channel 9 was playing KING KONG every night (M-F) starting at 7:00 PM. From Tuesday on you could set your watches by the clomp clomp clomp of the males descending the stairs at 8:15 to watch Fay Wray emerge from the water after she dropped into it from Kong's cave. Shortly after, they would slowly lumber back to their studies!!

That's like the scene in City Slickers where they're all standing around talking, one of the guys has brought his date who is MUCH younger than he is.

Something is mentioned about the Kennedy Assassination, and the young girl cries out, "OH, MY GOD!!! You mean someone killed TED Kennedy??!!??

Therein lies the generation gap..........as wide as the Grand Canyon!!

I was watching the extras from King Kong last night, and found myself wondering why instead of making his unnecessary remake, didn't Peter Jackson film Creation instead?

Because Creation only took 7 Days, while Jackson's version of King Kong ran much longer.

Ha! I dosed off during Jackson's KONG-- and I REALLY wanted to like this movie-- and after sleeping for what felt like a long time I was knudged awake by my buddy and as I looked up at the screen I blurted out "THEY AREN'T EVEN ON THE ISLAND YET??"

Batman, I think you and I have a lot in common-- not only is the '43Wilson my favorite serial, it's my favorite take on Batman (and the '49 is so bad Ed Wood laughed at it).

Good to be among friends!
