Really depends on how insane you are about upgrades. I myself am certifiable having bought 4-5 copies of the serials I like best trying to find the best of the best (and that doesn't include the VHS copies I bought WAAAAY back in the day).

But personally, I'm glad I got the SS version.
Andy, not only do I have two DVDs of THE SPIDER'S WEB, I also have it on VHS, and used to have it on 16MM. Easily Columbia's best serial.

Definitely a great serial and I'm a big fan of Columbia's output-- there's a bit more character to them.
I think I'm with Gravy-- BATMAN, THE PHANTOM, MONSTER AND THE APE and I'm sure another half dozen Columbia's I'm not thinking of are at the top of my repeat view list.

I love everything about The Shadow except the occasional white socks (or maybe they just slid down), the repeated cliffhangers where he just walks away and the unforgivable fact that he uses a .38 revolver-- I read that Street & Smith caught that in the script and pointed out to them that The Shadow only uses .45 AUTOMATICS and they promised a change and then just went with the .38 anyway. Ugh. But Jory is great as The Shadow.

Black Tiger wins for most annoying least disguised voice of any mystery villain.

As a fan of the Spider serials, let me recommend the cover story in the Winter/Spring 2016 issue of BLOOD N' THUNDER magazine. Issues can still be obtained here:

I picked up a copy at the Windy City Pulp & Paperback Show, and it's excellent!
