I finally caught up with this legend yesterday, and it lived up to its reputation. Louise Brooks is the daughter of a pharmacist who is thrown into reform school after having a baby out of wedlock. She escapes and finds her baby has died. Despairing, she becomes a prostitute. In the meantime, her father has married his housekeeper and had two more children. I can't tell any more without spoilers, but the story takes some interesting hops. This held my attention; in fact, I found it riveting. The restoration used six different museum prints and has a stunning score by Josef Turrin. I'll take this picture over the more famous PANDORA'S BOX because the story has depth, explicitly making the point that all of us are "lost," not just unwed mothers and prostitutes. It's surprising how powerful this film remains in an era when "single parent families" no longer carry such a stigma. I need to see more G.W. Pabst pictures. Anybody have any recommendations? |

Saw that in college. Any more? Incidentally, the Criterion DVD of The Threepenny Opera is great fun, although, like every print I've seen, my favorite number, The Cannon Song, is missing. It may have been cut out before the initial release, I dunno, but there is obviously a hole where it belongs. Seems to be irretrievably lost. Too bad. |

I’ll get back to you in 6 years. Actually, the only thing I can add is that, since my last post, Kino put out Secrets of a Soul and The Love of Jeanne Ney. Haven’t seen ’em though. I’d also like to have a look at Mädchen in Uniform, but I’m not aware of a source. Happy birthday. |

Thank you, Frank. Madchen in Uniform I saw many years ago. I found it disappointing then, but movies famous for their underlying sexual agenda tend to bore me. They're so predictable. |
