I just finished watching this funny, funny short by L & H. A question about the house they destroyed in the film. I believe I heard or read one time that either Stan or Ollie owned and actually lived in that house when the film was made. They were in the process of remodeling the house and used the the stripping of the house as the basis for the film. Any truth to this? Kan |

Laughing Gravy is correct. The house was owned by one of the crew members who worked on the film. He was well paid to have his house destroyed. |

The two houses are about a mile apart in Culver City. Hal Roach claimed they went to the wrong house and when the owners came back home they got a real surprise. It isn't true though. The first house they go to is 3404 and 3406 Caroline Avenue on the corner of Jacob and Caroline and the house they destroyed is at 10281 Dunleer Dr. |

If you look closely you'll notice the front door to Finlayson's house doesn't have glass on the window. In fact, it's just a prop door. Also look at the doorbell Ollie pulls out. It's also obviously a prop as you can see a hole directly under it where the real doorbell was that they removed for the gag. These guys were master comedy filmakers and knew what they were doing. |

The first time I saw BIG BUSINESS was in a movie theater and the audience was laughing their asses off. The payoff is the ending when policeman Tiny Sanford breaks up the fight and Stan and Ollie make up with Fin, and everyone is crying over what happened. Then Stan and Ollie glance at each other nudge each other and start gigling that they had a blast doing it. It makes everything that happened so personal. That wasn't just destruction that happened, it was a great time being had by them. If you study the film closely, you will see that it is one of the best edited films ever. Every scene cuts right at the perfect moment. Maybe the most perfect comedy ever. |

I finally got an uncut copy, and I think that is such a sublime comedy, with the way things start out slowly and build to a climax. My favorite scene is when Stan is hitting the paino with an ax sees Tiny, and then tries to put the insides of the piano back in. Very very funny, thier best film.   |

Sublime is just the right word. One of the most graceful two-reelers ever. |

It gets negatinve reviews but I like the Laurel And Hardy comedy where they are trying to put a crossword puzzle together as Oliver has to get to his wedding on time. I think its Me and My Pal. I like the way taht everyone gets involved, and the brawl that ensues when Finlayson comes to fetch Hardy. It always goes over well at parties. |

Somehow I had missed "Putting Pants on Philip" all these years. Saw it last night -- hilarious! |

My problem with PANTSING PHILIP is that it REALLY only has three gags in it: Stan’s infatuation with females; the public’s fascination with a man in kilts; & Stan’s embarrassment at being measured for an inseam in his prospective “pants.” As S. J. Perelman would say, “none of these three tickle my risibilities.” |

Despite the fact that it's not the "real" Laurel & Hardy characters we all know and love, Pants has a very high laugh quotient for me, too. I agree with Paul, it's hilarious. |

Another one I love is the one with the horse on the piano. Wonder if Luis Buniel ever saw it? |

If memory serves, that's Their Purple Moment. "Put Blue Boy on the piano!" |
