I am a big fan of the cartoon collections released by Thunderbean; a lot of great stuff, from 35mm, lovingly restored. Previously, the collections were on DVD-R but very professional, including a huge collection of bonus material. Well, they've found a distributor, and the sets are being re-released starting with this month's Attack of the '30s Characters and Popeye. The former features at least one cartoon from every major animation house of the decade, while the latter contains all the Fleischer public domain shorts, beautifully restored. If there were NO Popeye cartoons on it, though, it'd still be worth the $10 price for the bonus material, which includes Popeye commercials and lotsa other terrific stuff. Highly recommended.

Are these the Mackinac Media releases, Gravy?

Does "restored" mean all the original credits are back? Wonderful, if true.

Yes, these are Mackinac, and the cartoons I've seen so far have mostly the original credits.

Two more volumes are being released in February, Cartoons for Victory! (WWII propaganda, including anti-US cartoons from Germany) and Cultoons.

LG, I want these sets!

Are they being sold in retail stores? Are they available in retail stores in Canada?

Thanks, in advance.

I've been told they WILL be available in stores, although I'm not so sure about Canada. I'll see what I can find out.

That would be much appreciated, oh Temple of the Fleas. I have been hearing about these sets for a few months and they sound like real winners.

Yes, the original credits are back, but the story portion has been replaced by Clutch Cargo animation.

Though I am a tiny bit frustrated by the fact that my favorite Van Buren, Rough On Rats, is not included, I will happily spring for this release. It has what looks like a superior print of my second favorite, The Sunshine Makers, for one thing. Plus which, there are seven cartoons I don't remember, though I must have watched them on TV back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

Have to admit I prefer the Van Burens to the early Disneys. They may not have the same level of craftsmanship, but they are so weird and so funny. Thank God for Thunderbean.

For those who are considering getting the Classics from the Van Beuren Studio set, if you pre-order (through Amazon) before the March 15th release date, you will get a bonus disc of cartoons that didn't make the set.

The bonus DVD/BD includes the following cartoons:

Polar Pals
Croon Crazy
A Cat Fish Romance
The Golden Goose
Toyland Adventure
Robin Hood Rides Again

They're all from "Official Films" TV prints, looking just like what you older folks saw when you watched 'em back in the '50s, I'm thinkin'. Another great, great treasure from Thunderbean.

As for the main BD, I'll get to that next...

The restorations that Steve and his team have done on these unappreciated gems is nothing short of amazing.
