An impressive list. As a follow up, which would you rank as the top 10 with respect to both disc quality and excellence of the feature? Sort of trapped with Mala on Clipper Island and compelled to watch over and over again with no hope of rescue in sight.

I'd begin with the DVDs that have received the coveted "Laughing Gravy DVD of the Year" award.

2001: SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS (Disney)
2002: CITIZEN KANE (Warners)
2003: THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (Warners)
2004: THE RULES OF THE GAME (Criterion)
2005: KING KONG (Warners)

Five terrific discs (or 2-disc sets) that should be in any collection.

Ya gotta have cartoons, and the Beany & Cecil: Special Edition has got terrific cartoons and a surprising number of bonuses, too. Of course, the Looney Tunes boxed sets are magnificent, as is that French Betty Boop collection (more than 100 cartoons) and the Image Ub Iwerks and Van Beuren sets. Modern Times is a film I wouldn't want to live without, and the Laurel & Hardys from Germany are all good... but Pardon Us, with a wealth of bonus material and deleted scenes, is the best. I love Notorious and my dad and I loved to watch Birth of the Blues, so I'd include them (and the Criterion Notorious is terrific). 42nd Street is astounding, and a great musical, and the 2-disc set of Singin' in the Rain is a must-have; the second disc alone (with musical numbers from many films not on DVD) would make the list, too. Oh, and Treasure of Sierra Madre! Naturally, I'm also partial to DVDs I worked on, including the Arkoff collection from England and Captain Video!

I won't update everything, but those keeping score at home can note that yesterday I added Perils of Pauline (1914 -- and wasn't Paul Panzer something!), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Poverty Row Theater (from Retromedia) to the DVD shelves.

I actually started collecting film in the pre-home video days, on Super-8 magnetic sound film - real film. Most features were of the 20-minute condensation variety, which was a popular format during that brief period. One of those cost somewhere around 25 smackers, I believe. These were 1970s dollars, you understand. The rare full-length films were well over $100 generally. I remember "Last Train from Gun Hill" being one of the first offered, and it was about $150. I did get one or Laurel & Hardys from Blackhawk - I think those cost around $60-$75. I got a pretty good bunch of the sound shorts, too. I also had a few Warner cartoons - some of the ostensibly public domain titles, plus some officially-licensed ones I picked up in England. Got rid of them all after I got my Betamax in 1977.

My film-on-video collection is now over 700 titles, and as I scan the titles that I picked up in the 70s, 80s and even the 90s, it's amazing how many I still have that I now have little interest in ever seeing again. Some strange collectomania compulsion makes it difficult to dump them, though.

I started collecting when some of the premium movie cable channels started showing up. I don't know how many I have now but Mrs Smiley made me move the collection to the basement a few years ago. The spare bedroom now has actual bedroom furniture in it.

I would agee with Paul about wondering why I taped some of the movies or why I bought them but the collecting compulsion won't let me discard any of them.

I would agee with Paul about wondering why I taped some of the movies or why I bought them but the collecting compulsion won't let me discard any of them.

How brave are we? Who dares list some of the films they, in their previous lives, felt would be watchable in perpetuity, but now can summon little enthusiasm to revisit? I'll jump first, with a few:

Apocalypse Now
Quest for Fire
Tron
Slaughterhouse Five
It's A Wonderful Life
E.T.
Angel Heart
West Side Story
Some Like It Hot

Note that this is not intended as a comment upon the qualities of the films in the abstract, merely an illustration of the changing tastes of one individual.

This is what I own on DVD, 'legally':
http://thadk.dvdaf.com/

That's in addition to home-brewed DVD collections of just about every good cartoon ever made. My VHS collection is in much worse shape, and scattered amongst three houses.

I have added hundreds and hundreds of DVDs since THAT list was posted. And today, I added I Love Lucy: Season 1, and Phantom Museums: The Short Films of the Quay Brothers.

What was your first ever DVD?

Mine was The Vampire Lovers - the English MGM rip-off version with a trailer and *no* other extras as opposed to the American MGM Midnite Movie version you have with loads of extras PLUS Countess Dracula!
