I agree -- I always learn something new 'round this jernt.

By the way, I read some reprinted Walter Gibson Shadows in the mid-1980s when I was stuck alone in New Jersey (don't ask) and loved them.

And by the way again, Kid Gravy asked me the other day when we're going to see The Shadow serial. He apparently saw something about it on TV, on the Discovery Channel or something, a bit about serials. He couldn't tell me more than that.

I did not know about Mr. Lynds.  I DID know that Gibson did not write these.  Does anyone know of Mr. Lynds’ other writing endeavors???

Mort, Dennis Lynds wrote more than 80 novels and countless short stories over a career that lasted almost a half-century. The vast majority of his work -- mysteries and spy thrillers, mostly -- was done under pen names. His major series character was one-armed private detective Dan Fortune, whose adventures he wrote under the name of Michael Collins. Under the pseudonym of Mark Sadler he wrote mysteries featuring ex-actor Paul Shaw as a sleuth. He won quite a few awards, among them the Edgar, which is the Mystery Writers of America equivalent of the Oscar.

For the record (in case anybody is actually looking for the things), Lynds' Shadow novels are THE SHADOW STRIKES, SHADOW BEWARE, CRY SHADOW, THE SHADOW'S REVENGE, MARK OF THE SHADOW, SHADOW—GO MAD!, THE NIGHT OF THE SHADOW, and THE SHADOW: DESTINATION MOON.

In case anybody is interested you can read the 328 Shadow pulps as well as the 181 Doc Savage pulps ( and download in Adobe if you want ) - at Blackmask Online

but whatever you do , don't tell Conde Naste :D

'The Shadow ' was the first serial i bought about 6 months ago ( yes unfoutunately a pirated copy , but i was a lot younger then and hadn't discovered Alpha ,VCI , Downunder DVD etc, or this great site then ), i thought it was terrific , since then i've watched - The Spider , Blackhawk , The Masked Marvel , the 1st and 3rd Flash Gordons and i'm currently watching The Vigilante , the only problem is which of the 90 odd serials i've bought since then to watch next !

The revised Spider pulps Riddle Rider refers to are awful. For some reason they didn't think a mask and costume would work so they had the Spider in a turtle neck and facial makeup disguise & wig. You can identify these paperbacks easily as the covers show the awful Spider disguise. When you see the Spider in full costume on the cover, you know it's the real deal.

I have a CD-ROM with all 325 Shadow pulps that is in an easy to read format. I've read the first 16 stories and they are pretty good. There has been one or two that weren't as good as the others, but I didn't dislike them to the point where I stopped reading them. I can't decide whether to start picking and choosing stories tor ead or contiuing to read them in order, so far now I will continue to read them in the order they were written, using Will Murray's list as a guide.

I can recall one Charlie Chan sequel published under the Lynds by-line.

In a word, no. They were anachronistic in the Sixties; I can't imagine them holding up today. But they might seem entertaining to someone who'd never heard of the character before picking them up.

Thanks, RR. I've read some of the original pulps, which I enjoy, I'll save my cash this time.

Dennis Lynds wrote some of the Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators novels. I loved these books, and read the first 25 in the series. I also read the first 56 Hardy Boys books. That period from about 5th thru 8th grades was when I was devouring them.

LOL The Hardy's number of books published were only in the low 30's when I read 'em, but enjoyed every one. I also read the first 12 or 15 Ken Holt Mysteries, around the same period of time.

I agree that there's just too much daylight-- the white socks also throw me-- I didn't even know they HAD white socks back then! But for me the biggest gripe I have is The Shadow doesn't sport his twin automatics-- if I remember correctly he's got a pistol!! WTF? The Shadow blasting away with his twin .45s CREATED the term Blood and Thunder!

Still-- Jory is great, the Black Tiger is awful-- his nasal twang grates on my nerves, and his men couldn't have gone up against Bea Arthur and the Golden Girls let alone The Shadow-- but it's a fun serial anyway.

At times like these it is easy to fantasize about a Shadow movie/serial scripted by Walter Gibson! I think I'd cast Jory as the Shadow in that film too.

(I'd also love to see a Hopalong Cassidy movie with a script by Mulford. Of course, this is not a guarantee of excellence -- remember how the Tarzan serial with ERB involvement turned out.)
