Bonga, I can't find any evidence that they're being released separately.

Yep. The new Chaplin Mutual Shorts release is only being offered as a 4-disc set (for now anyway).

Picked up a couple of discs from Wal-Mart's $5.50 bargain shelves. Li'l Abner an absolute hoot of a 1959 musical and Victory at Sea. Naturally the Victory at Sea set is not the A&E set. It is from Mill Creek Entertainment and from what little I've seen so far is quite watchable. Normally I don't scrimp on DVDs if there is a quality release available. But there are a fair number of comments on the poor quality of the A&E release on Amazon.com. So although I haven't seen the A&E set I'm pretty comfortable going with the cheaper set in this case.

It's been awhile since I checked my own Wal-Mart's bargain bin. Is that L'il Abner the one with Julie Newmar as Stupefyin' Jones? I'd like to get it if it is. Here's the rundown of all the DVDs I got this week...a lighter batch than usual...

Little House on the Priaire: Season 6
Back to the Future: The Complete Trilogy
Lita Ford: The Complete Video Collection
Man in Black: Johnny Cash Live in Denmark, 1971
The Black Swan

Yes the 1959 version is with Julie Newmar. It isn't the one Mom and I remember watching. What I'm pretty sure we watched years ago was one of the TV versions listed on IMDb. Most likely the 1967 version.

I picked up a couple other DVDs this week, The Galloping Ghost serial from Alpha and Compulsion (1959).

I scooted over to Wal-Mart yesterday but no L'il Abner...well, I guess every Wal-Mart can't get the same titles. I didn't buy anything so I wound up with the handful listed above.

I may be wrong but I'm thinking that I may only have one title coming in the mail this week, the first season of Amazing Stories. Oh, wait...I just ordered a Criterion edition of Young Mr. Lincoln so that might also arrive during this week.

I do have one title I've had on order for over a year...a silent western serial. My order was really a pledge, I guess, and the serial is being worked on by the Serial Squadron. Of course, at this stage, I'm wondering if it will ever get done...

I've got to thank Andarius. Without his "avatar" post, I wouldn't have known how to set it up.

Ooooh.... heavy week for me.

This week got the Film Noir and Tough Guys collections from Warners, Ultraman: Vol. 1, Pee-Wee Herman Live, Niagara with Marilyn Monroe, and a Thunderbean compilation of cult cartoons.

LG,

I got the film noir and tough guys sets too, plus the Clark Gable collection you mentioned elsewhere. I also got some jazz vocalist stuff and the Will Rogers and Ren & Stimpy Lost Episodes sets are somewhere in the USPS system on their way to me. Based on DVD Savant's reviews, the film noir set is looking the most tempting for first view though I doubt I will watch all of them in short succession. I tend to sample from these sets and then return to them later to pull another item.

Anybody seen any sign of the two new VCI serials (Overland Mail & Raiders of Ghost City) that are supposed to be out around this time? I haven't ordered them yet since they have been delayed a couple of times.

Overland Mail is out now and I'll have a review up in a few days. Ghost City is supposedly shipping on Friday.

Look forward to the review. I believe that Alpha had this serial out. Will you be comparing them at all? In general the VCi's far outstrip the Alphas for quality but should at 3 to 5 times the price.

This will be a comparatively light week for me. Today I received Amazing Stories: Season 1 and I think only one more DVD should arrive this week. On the other hand I have a number of books coming, a mixture of country music and comic book reprints drawn by George Perez as far as those go.

I'm not sure I have the Alpha Overland Mail but if I do I will (compare them, that is).
