It's awful, and not in a fun way, with great songs poorly performed. Bet you never show it on FNF. I suspect Gershwin's death hoodooed the movie.

I can’t remember if I’ve seen this or not; probably not unless it played on the PBS Goldwyn series back in the late 70’s.

However, Halliwell, with whom I usually agree, gives it a surprising 2 stars.

And since you two crabs have proven such excellent contra-indicators lately, I’m fully prepared to love it!

(Well, on the other hand, the Ritz Brothers...)

I received a nice package from Rodney the other day with the serial order I sent him. Included were:

The Iron Claw
Bruce Gentry
Flying G-Men
Overland With kit Carson
Deadwood Dick
The Great Adventures Of Wild Bill Hickok
The Secret Code
Who's Guilty?
Perils Of the Royal Mounted
Sir Galahad
Cody Of The Pony Express
Valley Of Vanishing Men

All were VHS to DVD upgrades for my serial collection.

Thanks Rodney!

Not plane, nor bird, nor even frog. It's just little ol' me...

I got my initial Warner Archives discs this week: Westbound with Randolph Scott, Mr. Lucky with Cary Grant, Carbine Williams a biopic about someone you've never heard of with Jimmy Stewart, Young Tom Edison a biopic about someone you have heard of with Mickey Rooney playing young Tom, and Edison the Man with Spencer Tracy playing old Tom.

I've watched Westbound and Carbine Williams so far. Westbound is color and widescreen but at 1.78:1 so my guess is it is a version made for TV since the original would almost assuredly have been 1.85:1. It's a somewhat formulaic Scott western directed by Boetticher. There are some spots where the resolution slips for a few seconds and the color is a tiny bit washed out.

Carbine Williams, which I saw as a kid and remembered almost nothing about except that it had something to do with guns, is a pretty good picture. Excellent B&W picture quality.

My guess is that all the Warner Archives movies are using film transfers prepared for showing on TCM but, of course, I can't prove that.

A last minute addition. Double Sophia Loren two disc consisting of El Cid and The Fall of the Roman Empire.

Considering that these two are now in limbo on Region 2, the price was very high - £19.75. I paid this for them brand new. The other option was used discs at £17.75.

You guys know how I feel about Sophia Loren!

I just received the boxed set of M-Squad. I'm looking forward to watching this when I have time without the wife and kids. I've never seen it but I love Lee Marvin. I also picked up the first season of the Lawless Years, another vintage series that had escaped my attention. I've watched several of the episodes and am thouroughly enjoying them. The half hour time slot makes them jump right into the action. A nice complimentary series to the Untouchables. So far, so good.

So far the darn good westerns set is a waste of money. Pallid prints of films with good stories but poor direction. I'll watch all five, but so far I'm not pleased. Any film with Sterling Hayden looking like a sap is pure crud.

Wow. I've been enjoying those Westerns. But then - I'm not a Western fan. Could that have something to do with it? Do you think maybe they appeal more to somebody like me?

LOL Don't most bad films appeal to somebody like you?

After seeing my nephew's copy of Bolt I bought my own copy. Nice to see Disney can actually release a good animation film without Pixar making it for them.

I ordered a pair of sets yesterday...

The Budd Boetticher Box Set
Wyatt Earp: Season 1

I'd been meaning to order that Boetticher set for awhile...now it's heading this way on the next stagecoach...
