When I call the picture groundbreaking I'm talking about the actors. It's an anthology of the tricks of the trade, a step forward from Kane and Ambersons towards the more naturalistic acting of today.
Hmmmmmm, must confess I never thought of it from that standpoint.

However, that brings up another question: where do you stand, P., with relation to the age-old question of who REALLY directed this movie???

I'm sure Hawks directed the dialog scenes. They're typical of him and not a bit like similar scenes in Nyby's other pics. Nyby may have done the location and action shots, which are pretty darn good too, despite the cheesy make-up on the Big Carrot.

Several pictures I saw as a little kid made an impression because they were different from the usual homogenized fare: Clash By Night, Duel In the Sun, The Red House, The Ten Commandments, The Sea Hornet, Vera Cruz and The Highwayman come to mind; but none made a bigger impression on me than The Thing. There had never been anything like it before.

In the mid-Fifties, starting with Kiss Me Deadly and Thunder Road, a new crop of inexpensive but unusual pictures from people like Fuller, Corman, Arnold, Cahn and de Toth began appearing, and I think of The Thing as their poppa.

Just in -- a Murnau silent called Burning Soil from Grapevine. I'll get around to reviewing it eventually, but don't hold your breath.

My impression of Christian Nyby improved quite a bit after watching the first season of Perry Mason. He directed about a third of episodes.

He may have got to choose the shows he directed, but the ones he worked on seem to have a wrinkle or two in the formula and sharper relationships among the principals. No overlapping dialog, though.

'Zactly. He was above average but not a trailblazer like Hawks.

Picked up Whiteout.
Why? Do you make a lot of mistakes?

After watching Whiteout, the only good thing for me was Kate Beckinsale.

This week I got two. The first is The Firm, another Nick Love direction, hopefully along the same lines as The Business, The Football Factory and Outlaw. The second was The Longest Day. After seeing a bit of this on the coach ride on the Normandy battlefield tours, I decided to finally pick it up.

There's a fun commentary on Cabin in the Sky. It cuts between a slightly stuffy academic who sniffs at the film's moralizing, and "Rochester" Anderson's wife and daughter who offer a lot of affectionate background about the actor and like the fact that the story is about "doing right."

The film itself is worthwhile, much more of a "book" musical (although they do manage to work in Duke Ellington's orchestra).

3 weeks ago I went to Wal*Mart and saw a few sets for 15 bucks each. I bought a Western Collection containing 6 films. Yep, that 2.50 a film. The next week I picked up a James Dean collection; all 3 films (and each film was a 2-disc set) for a total of 15 bucks. 5 bucks a film... yahoooooo. Last week I went to get the last 15-buck set I coveted, a Marlon Brando set containing 5 films. Yippeeeeee. Funny thing happened though. All 3 sets had been priced incorrectly. I felt like taking back the 2 sets I had bought at a lesser price, and give Wal*Mart the correct amount for them. Wipe that tear from your eye..... I'm kidding!!!

Brando Set

Western Classics

James Dean Collection

I love Wal :P Mart
