Miss Mend finally came. Took so long that I suspect they had to make a second run (excellent news, if true). My early report is that it's nothing like what the reviews suggest -- not fluff in the least. Strongly influenced by Griffith, and brilliantly edited, so much so that it's exhausting to watch. I'm doing 15 minutes at a time to make it last a while. All I can say is, the people who say it's like a serial don't know much about serials.

The Kennel Murder Case came, too. I honestly don't remember why I ordered it. The best I can say is that it's short. The Nancy Drew feature that comes with it is nothing I'll ever watch again. I officially swear off buying this kind of uninteresting crap from now on.

I haven't watched any Griffith films, so the hour or so I saw of Miss Mend reminded me of Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler.

If you haven't watched any Griffith films, the one to start with is Intolerance. Back in '66 I wrote that it's the greatest American film, and I've never seen any reason to change my mind. Second best is Orphans of the Storm. Third is the impossible-to-find Lady of the Pavements.

I'm leaving The Birth of a Nation out of the discussion because it's so impossibly dated in its attitudes that modern people simply cannot cope with it, but if I had to rank it, it would be #4 for technigue and acting alone.

Intolerance may be great, but some of it -- especially the melodramatics of the Mother and the Law segments -- don't date so well.

I recall a college showing where, thanks to a protean performance by an organist who actually performed in the silent era, the audience was definitely with the historic portions. Then came the titters and noises during the "modern" story, which held (among other things) that rich women turned to "charitable" work when they lost the power to attract men, and so-called social reform was funded by crushing the working poor.

Great to hear, Mr P. I've had my copy of MISS MEND for about a month now and I haven't cracked it yet. Your post has made me curious enough to get it to the top of the Watch Pile.

Arriving in the mail...the new Mighty Mouse set. I'm looking forward to enjoying this with my son (age 11), I know he'll get a good giggle out of this.

The day brought me Criterion #505, Leo McCarey's Make Way for Tomorrow (1937) and VCI Forgotten Noir Vol. 13, with Breakdown (1952) with Ann Richards and Eye Witness (1950) with Robert Montgomery.

Picked up the 2 disc Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. Another solid effort from Bruce Timm and company.

If you liked that one, Marlin, as well as their recent Green Lantern effort, then I recommend the new release PLANET HULK. A very well done effort, easily as good as the Green Lantern release.

In my mail box when I got home last night was the Ultimate Hopalong Cassidy Collection that comes in the metal lunchbox. It totals 14 discs and contains all 66 Hoppy films. The negative is they aren't in chronological order and they're squeezed five films to a disc, but the prints are in nice shape (at least the ones I've seen, I already had two of the discs and had watched 10 films total). Now, if only someone would put together a complete Roy Rogers set.

Not only complete BUT remastered from original prints not the TV versions

DD,
Do you have this set? If so, are the print qualities sharp throughout the set? Because if they are, this set is an absolute steal for any B-Western fan. I was able to pick this up thru an Amazon dealer for under $50.

I was echoing your wish - I've seen the TMG set advertized but I don't think it is released yet - their quality varies. I have several of Roy's films on DVD the best quality was from ROAN. I've copied from TV etc. but the print quality varies. When TCM did a tribute to Roy some years back they used cut TV versions. It would be great to see the same restoration quality as the Gene Autry prints for Roy but unfortunately I don't think it will happen.
