I've officially stopped the purchase of any DVDs until September. Blu Ray is unlikely to come my way in the next five years.

Arrived yesterday, Spuk Um Mitternacht from Germany. That's Laurel & Hardy speaking German phonetically (it's the German 5-reel version of "The Laurel-Hardy Murder Case"). Lotsa bonus L&H material I'm still going through.

Long on my shopping list, I finally acquired the complete series of The Wild Wild West. Incredibly fun series, incredibly inept packaging on the complete series set. I had heard it was bad, but it was even worse that anticipated. The exterior box is very attractive, in a faux leather case design. But inside all the discs are held in two small accordian files. The divider between discs only covers the bottom third of the disc, leaving the top two thirds to rub against each other, especially dangerous to the discs' health while in the post. About half the discs arrived with visible surface scratches, some covering large segments of the discs. I immediately took out all the discs and placed them in pages of a disc binder to save them from any further wear. I've played three of the visibly worst discs so far and they've all played fine. But whoever was the brains (or lack thereof) behind this package design needs a trip to the woodshed. I've never understood the thinking behind the "fancy/creative" packaging that goes into some of these full series sets (I've read that the I Dream of Jeannie set is also a nightmare). You'd think the suits would realize that the market for these big, expensive sets are primarily collectors, to whom the safety of the discs themselves would be paramount.

I'm hopeful that the rest of the discs will we play fine, because I truly enjoy this series. One of the bonuses is a disc that contains the two follow-up TV movies that weren't included in the single season releases.

Does anyone else have any packaging nightmare stories to share?

I've had to repurchase 2012 from HMV.Com at £9.99 because the Play.Com one was in so bad shape that I destroyed it in a fit of temper, when I realised that complaining about bad customer service was too much of a hassle and that my anger came because my consumer rights were violated.

Icons of Suspense: Hammer Films arrived yesterday. It's got "The Snorkel" in it. Uh-huh.

The Rathbone Sherlock Holmes set arrived in the mail today. Very anxious to watch the nice prints that this set has to offer.

CL, enjoying your reviews and hoping you will do same for the Holmes set. I have been circling it myself for some time.

Thanks, Bats.
As is often the case with me, since my wish list is ridiculously long, my purchases are often dictated by finding what is on sale at an irresistible price. The Rathbone Holmes set was an Amazon Deal of the Day a couple of weeks back and the $59.99 price was too good to pass on.

I should write down my thoughts on the films as I watch them. There are at least two films in the set that I've never seen, and a couple of others that I'm not sure about.

I'm the same way, CL. I have a running wish list and always keep an eye out for deals.

Which Amazon was that Holmes deal on? .com? .ca? .uk? Darn, I missed it.

Yes, please write your thoughts down as you watch, it would be appreciated.

Bats,
The deal was from .com. I signed up to be notified of their "Deal of the Day" via e-mail every day. 99% of the time that just means I have one more e-mail that needs deleting, but every once in awhile it's worth it. I think I've caught three great deals in the last six months (one of the others was the complete Twilight Zone series).

Thanks, CL. I was unaware of that feature, but you can bet an ill-fitting utility belt that I will be checking into it.
